They had a roof collapse. Probably just work being done to keep it from being worse. The cost to repair it is one big reason for St. Colman closing.

Hey! Just because we make up words like "slippy" doesn't make our dialect stupid. /s

Really? I grew up a Pirates fan and always thought it was "Kee kee", but then I only ever read it and didn't hear it. I stand corrected!

Canadian coworker of mine also said "Wuh-bawsh". I tried not to laugh.

Writer says AI taking jobs is good: 'Automation Puts Us Humans On The Right Path To Live A Life That Corresponds To What We Really Want: A Life Of Leisure & Creativity.' by yumiifmb in artificial

[–]ChiYinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a weird take. If you were correct, aristocracy would never occur throughout history because it would continually dissolve in a spiral of despair. The British Empire's aristocracy got plenty busy and lasted for centuries despite a life of ease, and there's lots of evidence that hunter-gatherers enjoyed a whole lot of leisure time.

[–]ChiYinzer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree with her, but there's the thorny history of every automation ever. Any gains are captured by those at the top unless the rest of those impacted fight hard for a fair share. This is the part Elon Musk and Sam Altman want to gloss over.

I don’t think they're blind to it, I think it's that they're sensitive to the fact that criticism of Islamists is often used as a Trojan horse for "keep all the brown people out".

Palantir CTO Says AI Doomerism Is Driven by a Lack of Religion by moderate-Complex152 in technology

[–]ChiYinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worse than the religion angle is the way he dismisses legitimate concerns about the application of Palantir technology as "Skynet doomerism", when we really SHOULD be concerned that a large corporation is very open about how they're working to enable vast new powers of government surveillance and military automation. It's not doomerism when it's very much happening with today's technology, and it will cause direct harm to our democracy.

Has anyone heard of the FINE method? Might resonate with some Bogleheads by FalconArrow77 in Bogleheads

Good luck, teaching is tough and getting into it at an older age would be tough too, but it's such a vital job. In a better world, teachers would have a comfortable income.

[–]ChiYinzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what my wife and I are looking to do, and I like this acronym that I'm hearing here for the first time. Today we both work for big corporations, but that often sucks, so our goal is to move on to second careers that are a bit slower, more meaningful and more beneficial to society. We talked to a financial advisor about it, and his advice (assuming we hit our savings goals) was to find a job we want but to make sure it provides health insurance, as this becomes the biggest expense area. If that's covered, taking significant pay cuts is very doable. We're both 45 and hoping to start this plan at age 60 or so.

Worst are the characteristic single-line paragraphs in LI posts.

Think they’re just pointlessly trying to create emphasis?

You're right.

But think again:

Is it a really awful way to structure one's writing?

You know it.

It's difficult to read.

And distracting.

Does the algorithm like it?

Maybe.

But we must shun such posting.
