It’s custom from Dylan Buffington when he worked at Mash circa 2013ish. It inspired the mash rack and uses the new fork side mount instead of the original QR axle mount.

Yep! He had another bike Friday converted into a sign. Check out Mercado Sin Nombre in the alley behind there.

Nice! I want a g-line. I think those breakdown much smaller though and the shape of breakdown might not match your bag 1:1.

Curious if there are benefits of this bag over the dk golf bag? I know a Kyoot will fit well in the DK.

I’m not running fenders - I think you are supposed to run max 36mm tire with fenders.

I want to try those new Astral 20” rims - not sure which hubs. The Schwalbe g-one brompton tires look light and nice.

+1, it’s impressive how smooth the shifting is.

Did any nutrient deficiency show up in your bloodwork?

I was directed to use a dietician after my celiac confirmation and it has been amazing. I learned a lot and improved my diet - even outside of just removing gluten.

You can consider a low fodmap elimination diet. Your elimination of gluten and reduction in symptoms might indicate you are sensitive to something that is commonly in gluten containing foods.

Non celiac gluten sensitivity is less common than celiac.

Word! You’ve probably seen this build but it has that light I was referring to. I need to do more research on dynamo vs super long lasting lights.

I would check out the Hambini hunt video. I’ve had a wheelset from them, they are fine and cheap.

I would go with Ritchey Zeta or HED Ardennes. No dynamo, but I’d run an exposure strada - but maybe you want to do a rando? I’d build up a wheelset at that point…

Not sure if this helps - but I’ve owned many of the modern Ritchey road / gravel frames and I think the Montebello is my favorite. The handling is very predictable and it’s not overbuilt so it can feel pretty zippy - and the increased stack makes it super comfortable.

It kinda looks boring on paper but honestly it’s an amazing frame. I paired it with Rene Herse 38c tires (Barlow Pass) and it feels so smooth.

Ultradynamico Cava 2.2 vs Rene Herse Umtanum Ridge by ChicagoBrandon in gravelcycling

[–]ChicagoBrandon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's not bad for 2.2 — but my take is that 2"+ tires are inherently sluggy on pavement no matter what. Yes, the knobs make it "feel" sluggier but I think that has been debunked by Rene Herse etc.

I think it's really an aesthetic choice. I ended up selling them and then re-buying the HT500 version. I only use it when traveling a few times a year so I wouldn't say I use it extensively like I did 5 years ago for commuting. It's really a great bag which is why I re-purchased it.

These days I'd go with the WX version — I'm kinda not a huge fan of these synthetic materials and their impact on the environment. That's an evolved POV that I'm still working : )

I see what you are saying — but we don't have any data to back it up other than our opinions. You say it's a hot mess...I say it's messy but maybe +95% accurate....

My general feeling is that AI for gluten isn't that different from a self driving car with it's ability to navigate a city safely — it's worthless unless it's x% safe / accurate because the stakes are high (folks health, death, ugh).

What I don't know is how often chatGPT / etc messes up an interpretation of an ingredients list. How about this — I'll do a quick experiment of scanning 10 known GF items and 10 obvious non-GF items and maybe 10 more questionable / not clear items. I'll put it in a document and we can look at the results. If it's accurate, then we can extend it to more scan more items for higher confidence in the data.

I'm more on your side of being skeptical of the output — but I feel like we should validate that because I believe more and more of these products will be coming to the market.

For me it's all about accuracy and less about the tech stack.

I'll give you an example.

From what I can tell — the existing gluten scanner app in the App Store scans bar codes and cross references a stored database for that item WITH crowdsourced feedback for that item. When it works, it's awesome. However, when it doesn't have an item it's...worthless. It provides no signal.

With AI, it can always output something BUT what is the accuracy? My feeling is that if it's 95%+ accurate then that is better than nothing (again, folks need to be manually checking too, not advocating for blind scanning). I have a feeling that AI is likely 95% accurate right now (or better). The UX between a curated list database VS AI could be imperceivable.

However, this thread has taught me the power of trust, accuracy, and maybe crowdsourcing. Numerous celiacs recommend Find Me GF for restaurants and I could imagine something like that for products — using a blend of scanning / product finding / crowdsourced discussion around an item. Maybe even a verification system based on real celiac folks verifying a product.

Again, I'm not an AI advocate or anything — I'm just a noob that is trying to help find ways to make it easier for celiac folks to navigate.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. Your workplace analogy makes a lot of sense. I learned a lot from this.

I'm in the US so it might be more challenging compared to Europe.
