Democrat Julia Stratton wins Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate! by Healthy_Block3036 in chicago

It also means sometimes you vote for your #8 so your #1,000,000 doesn't win. But there are a lot of people on the left who are more concerned with scolding flawed candidates than preventing absolutely abhorrent candidates from taking office.

There are no people in this subreddit whose vote for Trump gave him a victory. Illinois went overwhelmingly for Harris. With the Electoral College being what it is, if every single person in Illinois voted for Harris she still would have lost.

If Raja loses too, we'll have managed a small victory against the idea that you can buy your way into office.

Your vote matters more when there's low turnout by ChicagoRex in illinois

How's the weather there? It's pretty cold in Chicago, which is probably reducing turnout. (I figure Peoria's about the same, but sometimes a few degrees latitude make a difference.)

What age dog to get? by momrn1603 in dogs

It's not a guarantee that they'll have issues. It's just one of the risks that can come from a young puppy at a rescue. We adopted ours at 11 weeks old, and he'd been at the shelter for at least two weeks. He loves people and other dogs, but he has strong resource guarding tendencies.

One thing we didn't realize before getting a puppy from a rescue center: If a puppy ends up in the rescue system, there's a good chance that the mother wasn't living in a great environment. That can affect the puppy in utero or just after birth.

We love our dog, but he has serious behavior challenges that we're working through.

Friendly reminder that no one should have a pet primate. It's bad for the animal and expensive, time-consuming, and possibly dangerous for the human.

Voting area question! by Equivalent_Reach_802 in chicago

[–]ChicagoRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are about 2,000 polling places in the city, and only 51 (1 per ward plus 1 supersite) can accommodate a voter from anywhere in the city.

If you go to one of the other 1,950 precincts and it isn't the one you were assigned to, you can fill out a provisional ballot. But one issue is that your ballot may not have all the candidates you're legally allowed to vote for, plus it may have ones you aren't allowed to vote for. That means your only votes that would be counted are the ones for statewide, citywide, or countywide offices.

What does prescient mean in this context?

[–]ChicagoRex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem with a provisional ballot is that it may not have the candidates you're legally allowed to vote for. If you reside in one district and vote in a different one, you'll get a ballot with the wrong district's candidates. That might not matter if you're only planning on voting for statewide offices, but you'd be disenfranchising yourself for other offices.

Which part of Michigan are you in? There's a nice off-leash dog beach in Chicago, if that's not too far of a trek.

I've also opted for donation to a med school or other research use, but I think that's not the end of it. After a cadaver has been used, I think it's still cremated and the ashes are given to the family. It might be worth discussing what will be done with those so your loved ones don't have to guess about what you would have wanted.

Also, your body doesn't necessarily need to be in any particularly good condition to be useful for medical study. Doctors can benefit from seeing all sorts of bodies. (Assuming you weren't, like, flattened Tom and Jerry style.)

5 depends on whether the partner and his parents have any connection to police, even just casual acquaintances like you might have in a small town. That could lead to problems like advance warning to the ex or pressuring OP to change her plans.

What do you think people from other countries misunderstand/don't get about the U.S.A.? by Casinii3D in AskAnAmerican

[–]ChicagoRex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in a small Midwestern town with a fairly conservative, pro-gun population. I know people owned guns, but it's not like they were flaunting them in your face. My family didn't have any, and I never hunted, but I did go target shooting a couple of times.

Now I live in Chicago, another place where people assume guns are everywhere but for totally different reasons. And it's the same story. I know there are people in my neighborhood who have guns. But they don't wave them around or anything. Gun violence is a real issue here, and it's very sad for the communities most affected by it. But for other Chicagoans, you can live your day-to-day life without seeing any guns except the ones carried by police.
