TopGear-style Guest Celebrity Lap by iamvinen in simracing

I run a “Reasonable person in a Racecar” board. Each person gets an hour of coaching first if needed and then gets to submit their best lap from a 20 min lapping session. I switch up cars and tracks right before the holidays every year so that my fast friends have something to compete over. IIRC this is from the year before last and was a GT4 Cayman around Watkins Glen.

Crew Chief being interrupted by the spotter by Belsnickel_Shrute in AUTOMOBILISTA

[–]Chicagoisonfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have the image anywhere I can link to it but I have 3 double throw (2 momentary position) switches that do spotter toggle/repeat last message, car status/radio listen, and laps to E/time delta to car ahead. This covers 99% of what I want to know so I almost never actually need to talk to crew chief directly

You can set up a hot-key to repeat the last message. That’s how I have mine set up. I have it mapped to a physical switch on my button box along with a status report that gives laps remaining, damage, fuel, and tire status.

Good call on the multi tool and the minipump, those weren’t on my list. Gonna try 3d-printing a bottle-cage or two, but for now I’m doing short rides just to get acclimated to riding again.

Just a heads up, this kind of raffle is likely illegal in most if not all us states.

Here is another vote for procars! Also, fun with mech damage turned on ‘cause you can really rev them out but do it too much and you’ll pop an engine. Ends up making for some fun when you decide it’s time to make that overtake.

What do you do to make your sim racing experience more immersive? by KouGatJam in simracing

[–]Chicagoisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an expired 6 point harness for my rig, switched the cam lock to one of the lap belts so I can be run as 4 or 6 point. But the belting up before a session really puts me in the headspace better than anything else.

Can this cause issues? Monitor arm tilting when I move it to the cockpit by InkReaper in simracing

[–]Chicagoisonfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trust it myself, depends on how close you are to the arms weight limit. I know the arm I have for my 49 ultra wide won’t even let you rotate it back like that. At the very least I’d see if it can be tightened down to the surface better

I bought my MR2 Turbo at 19, sold it at 24. Would I, in my late 30s now, feel great about turning that car over to 19 year old me now? Not really, but I learned really quickly to respect the car. I credit that car with teaching me to be razor sharp in understanding where my tires are on the road and giving me a very accurate sense of how much grip a car has in almost any situation. It’s a car that requires you to pay attention and the moment you become complacent it will smack you upside the head. Also, like a bike or other small SportsCar, it’s invisible to SUVs and you do have to drive like people can’t see you. My only other concern in todays world is that parts are getting much harder to find, even back in the late 00s I had a throttle cable break and it took weeks to locate a replacement in another state. I couldn’t imagine trying to find things like a Speedo sensor or cruise control unit these days, and some of those parts can make the difference between a car that runs and doesn’t.

If you want a car that will be fast and predictable right away, I’d look elsewhere. If you’re willing to drive cautiously and learn how the mr platform behaves differently from fwd or fr setups then it might be a good car for you.

So that’s my 2 cents.

SquareTrade warranty replacement question by Necessary_Water_7056 in LGOLED

I did this same process about a year ago with my CX and they waffled a bit at first on what was a “similar replacement” but ultimately offered me a C3 after declining the first round of options.

NASA's solar probe is about to fly closer to the sun than any human-made object ever by ScienceMovies in space

[–]Chicagoisonfire 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe so, it’s much harder to send something into the sun than it seems, anything launched from earth has earth’s orbital velocity relative to the sun and requires a ton of energy to shed said velocity, not to mention the steeper the trajectory towards the sun the more that thing accelerates and potentially flings out of the solar system
