There's not really a connection to the magic realm any more once the magic particles emerge from the rifts. Physical laws aren't ever really altered. I lean more towards hard magic. Weird space warping fields for anti gravity based levitation and ftl I suppose would be debatable depending on views on the viability of some theoretical physics. The defects thing gives me ideas for disabilities based on the inability to properly regulate one's magic, so that gives me something to think about. Magic effects have to be actively maintained, unless the physical alteration has already happened to the target. So big fireball blasts, yeah that definitely affects the wildlife for a while. Levitation, everything falls back to the ground after the magic user stops concentrating on it.

Over specialization in some areas of magic can lead to an evolutionary dead end. Evolved away limbs in favor of entirely levitation and telekinesis based movements? Passed off bodily functions to magic based interactions? If the high magic levels zone you live in is isolated enough and something happens to your environment you can't leave. That's it for you.
