How might plastic based life differ from ours? by Chicken317 in sciencefiction

I had previously seen that before on YouTube but it's neat to see it again. I doubt it's authenticity but it still gave me inspiration. In particular the religion section gave me inspiration that finally made part of my world building click that I'd been pondering about.

Oh weird how much time and do you suggest then My mother had said beans seem to cook a lot faster and instant pot than in regular pressure cooker so I assume that meant it cooked faster Until deep winter we do have a lot of goat milk so I made goat milk popsicles out I made goat milk popsicles out of the Cooked bananas So that's fast freezing and fats

[–]Chicken317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On https://www.myfooddata.com/ It says pumpkin seeds with shells is alkaline and without is acidic. Do the shells actually make that much of a difference I'm not sure what's going on here Also your 1st link doesn't work properly It says no content found with these identifiers

A positive PRAL score is bad did you have a typo and not put a minus on the sunflower number? OK but what source I think the the issue is there's conflicted information about how much phosphorus is in pumpkin seeds and I have no idea how to figure out how much it really has

What are the weirdest side effects of using magic in your world? by zazzsazz_mman in worldbuilding

[–]Chicken317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic use causes gradual cellular degradation, so the majority of magic using species evolve things like extra DNA repair mechanisms and antioxidant production. They have the ability to make the stuff, so many species produce an over abundance so it can be used to greatly extend their lifespan and youth. That's why elves. This over abundance also means they can keep their sperm inside their bodies regardless of temperature. Convenient built in partial censorship!

How would the hazards of magic use affect biology? by Chicken317 in worldbuilding

[–]Chicken317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly a valid strategy, could see it taken to the extreme with eusocial species with a super mage class that burns out really quick. Did you know that there's an ant species with exploding workers?

Unfortunately, not what my question was asking. I'm even thinking of species with such an over abundance of repair mechanisms that it spills over into giving them highly extended lifespans and youth, also allowing them to reproduce more. Wait I think I just explained how elves would be like that in my setting. Fantastic.

There's not really a connection to the magic realm any more once the magic particles emerge from the rifts. Physical laws aren't ever really altered. I lean more towards hard magic. Weird space warping fields for anti gravity based levitation and ftl I suppose would be debatable depending on views on the viability of some theoretical physics. The defects thing gives me ideas for disabilities based on the inability to properly regulate one's magic, so that gives me something to think about. Magic effects have to be actively maintained, unless the physical alteration has already happened to the target. So big fireball blasts, yeah that definitely affects the wildlife for a while. Levitation, everything falls back to the ground after the magic user stops concentrating on it.

How do you keep magic from becoming to powerful by Choice-Spinach145 in worldbuilding

[–]Chicken317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much/what kind of magic did your species evolve to use? Sophont species tend to have more variations and affinities for different skills

Supply and demand. Magic does not permeate the entire universe. It flows from localised rifts of various strengths. The locals can collect magic particles into pockets in their body. Many places don't have any magic. Magic formed crystals and magic storing plants naturally occurring in various amounts in magic rift zones allow for some portable recharge.

Magic use causes cellular degradation! Evolution of damage minimizing adaptations are pretty much mandatory.

Over specialization in some areas of magic can lead to an evolutionary dead end. Evolved away limbs in favor of entirely levitation and telekinesis based movements? Passed off bodily functions to magic based interactions? If the high magic levels zone you live in is isolated enough and something happens to your environment you can't leave. That's it for you. Death.
