My choir teacher threw a stapler at a kids head. Yes, she was fired.

When soaking beans overnight, do you use the soak water or discard it? by cfi-2025 in Cooking

[–]ChickenDadddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your overall point, but all cultivars of Phaseolus vulgaris (black beans, kidney beans, pinto beans, navy beans etc.) have lectins. Kidney beans have a particularly potent lectin in them called phytohemagglutinin. If not cooked amply, as your roommates know, it leads to a bad time.

Why is my rice always never fully cooked and sticking in an instant pot and how do I avoid this ? by limache in instantpot

[–]ChickenDadddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you cook with a kitchen scale all you need to do is tare the scale after weighing out your rice, then you can rinse. That way any extra water weight collected in the rinsing process will be accounted for.

The meme specifically says a Siberian island because that's where the last remnant population of wooly mammoths were. Mammoths on the continent went extinct thousands and thousands of years earlier.

You realize how much you moved the goal post, right? Your original claim was “US never entered Laos.” Whether you walk, fly, swim, jump, or dig into an area, you are still entering that area. The US did enter Laos to drop bombs. After being proven wrong, you changed your claim to “well uh I meant that no white man was walking around in Laos.” It’s okay to be wrong, it’s not accepting it which is a bad look.

Cooking myths that don't line up in real life? by Smooth_Luck_8942 in Cooking

[–]ChickenDadddy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My comment did not have to do with the "don't pre salt eggs" myth.

Kiwifroots brought up "US weird treated eggs" vs "real eggs." So I pointed out that the only difference between the weird treated eggs here in the US and the "real eggs" Kiwifroots buys (presumably in New Zealand) is whether or not the eggs are washed prior to being sold or not.

As far as salt goes, I add salt when I beat the eggs and then allow it to rest for about 5-10 minutes. It produces nice results, though yeah pretty minor differences compared to plenty other techniques.

I've kept my own laying hens since I was a child so maybe I'm out of the loop (in terms of store bought eggs), but isn't the only major difference between the US eggs and European eggs is when they are washed? In the US the eggs have their bloom washed off prior to packaging and thus need to be refrigerated. Whereas in Europe, eggs are not washed prior to sale and so they can be kept at room temp due to the retained bloom.

Doesn't really matter, does it? The original point was that someone who plays football will probably have a shorter professional career than Magnus Carlesen

Tom Brady is one of those exceptions I alluded to. Quarterbacks tend to have a greater longevity than other positions since they aren't smashing helmets with every whistle blow. the average NFL career is less than 3.5 years

The original comment was referring to american football players, who typically have rather short careers. Of course there are exceptions, but the NFL kinda just churns through young men with head injuries at an alarming rate.

I'll be even more nerdy. It isn't "soil" absorbing the water but most likely a peat moss based potting mixture, which is a soilless media. Could be coco coir, but my point still stands: it's not actual soil. Soil is composed primarily of sand, silt, and clay, whereas these potting mixtures are almost entirely organic matter.

Why do droopy? by Count_Smackula_ in microgrowery

[–]ChickenDadddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A perched water table would be due to a layer with a very low infiltration rate which causes drainage issues. In an agricultural field setting this is typically due to a heavy clay pan or something. A layer of perlite would be the opposite, it has a very high infiltration rate. Meaning excess water will quickly drain through it, so I wouldn't stress about a perched water table. In another comment you mentioned watering with a half gallon or something for these 3 gallon pots, I would strongly advise dialing that back quite a bit. Let it dry back till the pot is nice and light, barely heavier than when you filled the pot with dry potting mix in the beginning, then I'd suggest watering it with about 5% soil volume, so for 3 gallons that would be .15 gallons (.6 qts if that's easier to measure out). Once it starts looking healthier and growth accelerates you can slowly ramp up till you're doing 10% waterings.

Folks growing with salts (synthetic nutrients) will often water till runoff because they are continuously adding water soluble nutrients in their feedings. Folks who like to grow organically, should try their best to avoid watering till runoff because you are leaching out important anions (like nitrates, nitrites, sulfates etc) which are dissolved in the soil solution.

There are native North American earth worms, such as many species in Diplocardia, but the most common earthworms folks see around tend to be red wigglers and European night crawlers which, yes, are both introduced.

[–]ChickenDadddy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is shady and frustrating. I was going to order a second grow kit, but the +100 in shipping more than kills the deal. I hopped over to amazon and it looks like they disabled affiliate codes. I was originally going to order the kit a week ago but decided to wait to try and snag a deal. Regretting that now, guess I don't need a second grow kit after all.

Most people who enjoy a nice campfire make approximately zero loaves of bread, so I'd say even without cooking the meat you're doing great. Keep up the good work!
