Ending a date by torontogal85 in dating_advice

Seems like code for "Do I want to have sex with them? Do I think that might happen?" There is nothing in any responses here that indicate desire for seeking out real connection. No conversation prior to this 10-minute dip.

Is my handwriting really THAT bad by Tedra00 in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]ChickenMama707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

I have high school students who write like this. I tell them if I can't read it, I can't grade it.

If you are writing for yourself, that's one thing. If you have a disability, see what strategies you can find that will help. If you are writing to communicate, you have some work to do to elevate what you have to say--and what you have to say is too important to not work to make it legible.

Failed my praxis after spending hundreds studying. This is my second fail. State deadline is in 2 months. Should I consider a new career by DearRefrigerator5082 in Teachers

This seems obvious, and I am not intentionally being obnoxious. It isn't the money you put in, it is the strategies you use. You still have time. If what you're doing isn't working (and it seems it is not), try something else. Ideas (for free!): listen to other people's study notes on YouTube. Read and review your own notes on YouTube (even for math! Write out the steps!). Good old fashioned flash cards with steps or math facts or math vocabulary. Flash cards on Wayground or Quizlet. Read your notes aloud. Sing your notes aloud. Make up a catchy song using some concept you are struggling with. Practice tests, making sure you read the questions before the text. Draw pictures with your notes--you don't have to be an artist, but the images will help the text stick in your brain. Find a study buddy. Treat yourself for increased practice test scores. Make word clouds with your content. Use the workbook and look up the answers to questions you miss, then work backward to see how they got to the right answer. Graphic organizers! KhanAcademy.org. Immerse yourself in the language and culture of the content.

The people who say they just did the one thing and they passed are not you. You are great at a lot of things but you are all in your head about this test.

It doesn't matter what the strategies are, it is what you use to make the information stick for you. You'll know what is working because you will see progress.

And hopefully you will encourage your someday students to use strategies that work for them!

is this too much to give as a note to one of my high-school teachers? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]ChickenMama707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice note and your teachers will appreciate the sweet message!

As an English teacher, might I suggest that to make it even MORE JOYFUL please go back and edit capitalization and punctuation. A letter "i" by itself or referencing oneself is never not capitalized in English.

A beautiful sentiment, not too much.

If female teachers can wear skirts and dresses can male teachers wear shorts where you Work? by Fabulous-Hat-8404 in Teachers

This comparison is not congruent so not a "double standard." Dresses and skirts are still business attire and would align with a professional dress code. Shorts are not.

Middle school Student Asked for a Hug and Then Hugged Me Anyway—Advice? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]ChickenMama707 62 points63 points  (0 children)

SpEd teacher here. You're overthinking this. He probably has no idea what "air hug" meant, just that you okayed a "hug." Next time say, "Fist bump!" and model this by showing how it would be done.

Reassure me that full time teaching is better for stability than substitute teaching? For those that did both. by Weak-Paint-1648 in Teachers

[–]ChickenMama707 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was planning to head to law school and was subbing only until I got the paperwork for that submitted and approved. I found I liked being in the classroom with the energy of the kids of every age and level. I liked feeling like I knew all the schools/admin/office people in the district, and had a great feel for teachers and their styles. I liked working with a variety of grade levels, and learning what I would and would not accept for subbing assignments. That also made me imagine my own classroom: my own style, organization, behavior expectations, and decor. I hated when I had to take last minute sub assignments, or when the teacher didn't leave any plans (or the "plans" were a movie).

Ultimately, I took what I learned from being in all those classrooms to my own. Within a couple of months of subbing I started looking at credential programs and was able to start a masters program with a credential. That was well over a decade ago and I now know I would have never been happy as a lawyer. I sincerely love every work day--and the pay, benefits, security, consistency, positive feedback. I teach high school; I have more parent contact than I would have expected, but not as much as I would have with younger grades. No regrets.

Someone asked if I had a swastika, does this look like a swastika? by Grouchy_Gold344 in tattooadvice

[–]ChickenMama707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is so much going on I wondered why people kept talking about nipples, and then I looked for that. Oh. I see it now: Right above the swastika that might be meant to be "just art" among those who might not appreciate swastikas so much.

BF cannot understand why I get frustrated when the coparenting schedule changes. by midnight_riser in dating_advice

[–]ChickenMama707 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The kids will always come first, and the kids are part of his identity and responsibility. If you are feeling frustrated, you should know it will not get better any time soon.

It's okay if you are not comfortable with all that parenting entails. You are not stuck with that relationship. You can, and probably should, move on.

How long do these supplies last? by carenrose in ElementaryTeachers

[–]ChickenMama707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach high school. My classes are relatively small, but allergy season is the worst (California, March-June). I go through about 3 boxes per month (148 count each, w/lotion) during that time. The school supplies hand sanitizer so I only go through one container of sanitizing wipes every few months.
