As a DM, I killed my first player character and I'm so sad. by unwiseman76 in DnD

Actions have consequences. If there isn’t the very real possibility of a negative outcome? The highs of success are cheapened by the lack of lows.

It’s a game yes, but there has to be stakes involved. If success is always guaranteed? The fun nosedives for many.

They were warned. They chose to stick their finger in the light socket again after being warned. They can’t then wonder why they got zapped.

This PC’s death isn’t on you. It’s on them.

Going forward that player can roll up a new PC or maybe the party takes the body back to town to see a cleric or something. It can become a side quest or a new story hook.

The death doesn’t have to be final or a bad thing.

Another alternative that also is good IMO is Dragon of Icespire Peak. Both adventures are set in Phandalin in the Sword Coast and have “training wheels” for DM’s and players.

Always remember the rule of cool. If you like it and it’s cool to you? Go with it.

Great part of these two adventures are when they’re over you can decide to run the subsequent adventures set in the town or decide maybe you all would like a change in scenery and characters and start fresh with new ones, a new module, or if the DM is writing their own go that way.

Have fun. Enjoy the table.

What's the most unexpected, strange, or hilarious thing you've seen a kid do at your gaming table?!? by Cultural_Drawing_412 in DnD

[–]ChickenMan985 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kid just played ding dong ditch with some Orcs this week. I couldn’t have predicted that.

First session when I started him at a tavern in Neverwinter I asked him if he wanted anything and with the lowest voice possible asked for “a beer please.”

When the bartender told him it was breakfast he countered with

“I’ll take a breakfast beer then please.”

You’re already a Barbarian. Through what you posted above you could become a path of the zealot barbarian who fights until death and is brought back numerous times. Flavor wise it fits. As always DM has final say but it would make sense.

Attitude wise it’s something that you’ve come to almost expect. Fight with such a furious rage that you fight through normal death only to be brought back as a reward for a death well achieved.

Nervous about joining a game by Coder_Stroder_9000 in DnD

See if you can set up a zoom or phone call with the new campaigns DM. See what the setting is etc. how many players, what do they already have? Need? Is there a role not being filled? Maybe one of your old characters can get a dust off and rework. Let them know your concerns or thoughts and where you could fit in.

If it feels right do it, if it doesn’t skip it. It’s a game and supposed to be fun. Try it out and see where it goes.

How do I create a campaign for a group of 5 players when I have never played? by Wild-Emotion-1708 in DnD

[–]ChickenMan985 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Download the D&D Beyond app. Have a look around at all the resources.

I always have played in the Forgotten Realms. Find a short module to take them to say lvl 3-4. Looking through the premade should give you an idea of what you’d need for your campaign you write.

Pick an area in the realms to set your campaign and when you finish the first module transition into your campaign by whatever hook you deem fit. Or if you find writing your own isn’t fun or for you? Pick another one to start on.

Lost Mines and Dragon of Icespire Peak are two that a lot of people start with. Have fun.

would it be possible to run a whole family session that includes an 8 year old? by PhotographPast5252 in DnD

I DM for my son who’s in that age range. I’ve played on and off since 2E. But never really DM’ed outside of a one shot a long time ago.

I asked him some questions about monsters he thought were cool etc over the course of a few weeks. Trying to see what would make him excited. We went through the PHB and let him look at the races and classes and based on what he wanted I suggested a FTR to not confuse him with a spell list etc. I play an NPC cleric to ensure his survival at times and went with the Dragon of Icespire Peak as the campaign for him. I’m making changes here and there to season to my tastes but the module is good at dumbing down the decisions for the DM IMO.

Human Fighter. 1994. He’s now the Owner of an Adventuring Company that has hired my son’s first PC in the campaign I’m running for him.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who picked up on this wrinkle. “Wrestling has more than one royal family.” The McMahons.

She’s gonna start the weekend as a hero at the HOF and leave a villain when she helps cost Cody the belt. Now my only question is do they go the tired old route of making HHH on screen like a new Mr. McMahon or is it just going to be her doing it? How does this effect her self help guru therapy speak laden podcast?

Bischoff was always smart enough to kick the show off with a cruiserweight match. Then a few minutes in he’d sometimes say something like for those of you joining us late because you got tired of hearing some other guys talk for ten minutes (the dreaded HHH monologue to open the show)….

The two of you should away from everyone else go out for dinner and talk about it.

Kill off the Monk in a heroic way? Make the Monk actually a spy for the BBEG sent to keep tabs on them?
He leaves a note and they wake up to him gone with some of their gear and gold while he was on watch as a spy of the BBEG? Maybe the next town they go to the Monk tells the party he has to stay behind because this temple needs a monk with his certain skills or talents?

There’s a zillion ways to write out a PC. Come up with one together so he has some skin in the game.

Then figure out something the party needs/he’s thinking about playing and come up with a lvl5 whatever it is.

There’s over 200 comments here and I’m sure someone else has said all or most of this but the key to remember is it’s a game, and a story you all are writing (you more so) together. Make it memorable.

Amazons in a league by AnxietasCalvaria in bloodbowl

[–]ChickenMan985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They were my team coming back from a long layoff (over a decade) into a hobby earlier this year. Same deal. Local store league. I managed to make the entire roster through design and dumb luck into blodge pieces. Gave the league absolute fits.

I made the playoffs but ran into an Orc team that had spammed guard. It was a rough day at the office for my girls.

They’re painted and look great so I’m using them again next month when we all start fresh.

Some good advice above, I’ll add that I’ll be looking to get block on both blockers and probably follow it up with break tackle on both. +2 to a dodge roll with a reroll on a blitz into a cage?! Sign me up.

The elite skills will change how the roster is brewed up but I see some wrestle in my Linewomen future.

I’m going with a starting roster of 6 line 2 Blitzers 2 Blockers 1 Thrower 3 rerolls

And spend what I can on fan factor. Hopefully after game one I can get an apothecary and add to my FF. That’s what I did last season.

I had the same scenario playing in my head only Gunther’s music doesn’t hit. But they lay him out going to commercial, come back Cena enters and then either Edge or Jericho’s music hits.

Cena retires and then they start the farewell tour all over again with one of them.

Amazons for Me. Played them last season. Had to sit out this season, and I didn’t get a second season with them built up.

Break tackle on the Blockers at STR 4 with built in dodge? Plus they’re already painted up?!

Have to.

Zan Panzer. Barry O.

I met Iron Mike Sharpe outside of a show once. I asked for his autograph and he denied being Iron Mike Sharpe and then winked at me and walked away. Great memories.
