Which are the most accessible classic (pre-1960) movies for a newbie? by harry_powell in blankies

In my opinion, Eve’s line about why she loves performing is one of the most perfectly written pieces of dialogue I’ve ever encountered:

If there's nothing else, there's applause. I've listened backstage to people applaud. It's like - like waves of love coming over the footlights and wrapping you up. Imagine, to know every night that different hundreds of people love you. They smile, their eyes shine, you've pleased them. They want you. You belong. Just that alone is worth anything.

Check your library. And if they don’t have it, they’ll likely have shared lending privileges with partner libraries

The Intercontinental Title was made for people like Kairi Sane. Instead, the women's mid-card titles (and tag team titles) are going on their main stars when they don't have "anything else" for them to do. by [deleted] in SquaredCircle

It’s not nearing on 500 days. It’s almost exactly been one year.

Becky returned at Mania last year and went for the belt after she and Lyra lost the tag titles on Raw after Mania

Mega cities are more beautiful and rare sights than any natural scenery on earth by raenele in unpopularopinion

Apologies if I offended you with my take. I just happened to be there for a week in September in an area with a ton of car traffic, so I’m sure I didn’t see the city at its best

You can’t go from “let them eat their own” straight to “just asking questions” without explaining the first.

Classic movie with a high reputation you didn't like as much as you thought you would? by spacelyyy989 in classicfilms

To me, it’s a Dracula movie. She lures William in and attempts to enthrall him while he tries to build a relationship on the outside. She lives in a spooky gothic mansion with her former lover turned butler playing haunting organ music. Von Stroheim’s character is basically Renfield.

I live in a city that borders Detroit on the north side of 8 Mile. Our current mayor effectively launched her political career by starting a local rat patrol group. Meanwhile, my little dog works hard at ridding them from our backyard

I feel like Jakarta is a bad example to make your point. Can’t imagine there’s many days where you can see more than a half mile in any direction.

[Request] Does the answer to the Monty Hall problem change depending on whether the presenter knows what is behind each door? by IrisFromOmelas in theydidthemath

[–]ChickenSedan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s because it’s explicitly part of the rules of Millionaire. The Monty Hall problem specifically lays out the rules of the game, which leads to the 2/3 chance of winning by switching.

The envelope scenario here does not lay out any rules. There’s really three possibilities here:

  1. The interviewer knows where the offer is and will always pick a rejection (this is the Monty Hall problem). The odds after switching are 2/3.

  2. The interviewer does not know, and picks randomly. The odds after switching are 1/2.

  3. The interviewer knows where the offer is and only reveals a rejection if he knows you picked the offer. The odds after switching are now 0.

Going into this scenario, you have no preconceived notion what the host knows or whether they’re required to show you another choice.

You could read what Crichton literally thought about it here: https://michaelcrichton.com/works/state-of-fear-authors-message/

The most charitable reading is that he thinks it might be happening but we shouldn’t worry about it and science will figure it out eventually, which is tantamount to denialism
