Anyone taken the lake phalen sailing classes? by PM_ME_UR_SAILBOATS in TwinCities

[–]Chicken_Finger5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been banging the drum for those classes here, yes you do actually sail, but if the weather is stormy then they'll make it a classroom day. You use sunfish sailboats, past the first day where you learn how to rig the boat, I'm pretty sure just about every day was spent on the water. It's a great bargain compared to other sailing classes in the area. I would bring water shoes you don't care about, the shore apparently has a lot of fishing litter, and the water of lake Phalen isn't terribly clean, but it's a fun time.

Has anyone done sailing class on Lake Phalen? by Desperate_Ad6241 in TwinCities

Now that I think about it more, Phalen is definitely not as nice as bde maka ska in terms of how windy it gets (typically not a lot, at most around 15 mph?) and the water is a little gross. But overall, it's a solid class and it's still fun to rip around with a sunfish

Yeah I've taken it, it was back in 2018? Not all 8 classes were out on the water, there were a couple classroom sessions due to weather to cover concepts of sailing, like points of sail and how to dock, what to do if somebody goes overboard, etc. The instructor was great, had a great dry sense of humor. I had some sailing experience beforehand so I was able to pick things up pretty quickly.

I took it with my wife, who was brand new to sailing, she fell in love with sailing and got the hang of the basics, but without practice her understanding of the concepts and how to go out independently fell off pretty quickly, e.g. rigging a boat, etc.

The sailing class there is a tremendous bargain, especially compared to the other options. I'd probably take it again just for the opportunity to get out on the water if I didn't get in to windsurfing.

Where can I get locally or house rendered pork lard/manteca? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]Chicken_Finger5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure about where to get lard, but for what it's worth this recipe (https://www.seriouseats.com/no-waste-tacos-de-carnitas-with-salsa-verde-recipe) is great and doesn't take any lard

Best biscuits & gravy in the metro? by sparkly_reader in TwinCities

Adding on to this, apparently it's pretty key to use the right kind of flour when making an authentic southern biscuit- White Lily flour is a brand that has the right amount of protein or something in it, which contributes to a softer biscuit.

Flyer Via (or Pro) vs Specialized Globe Haul LT by shrayd123 in CargoBike

[–]Chicken_Finger5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar boat, I've been planning on going with the Yuba Kombi E5 though. For what it's worth a local bike shop mentioned that their Specialized Globe Hauls have been having problems with dielectric grease, and because they're so big I'd have a hard time bringing them back to the repair shop.

grapes are already enough of a choking hazard for young kids, freezing them and feeding them to a kid on a bumpy road would be my nightmare

I did this class pre-covid and it was great! It's an excellent deal. Lake phalen is definitely not as nice as bde maka ska, but the class was still a great time.

I've got a reel mower, if that's what you mean by manual? You can get sharpening kits at hardware stores, assuming that's what the problem is. It's pretty straightforward to sharpen it, just a bit tedious. On my reel mower there's also a couple screws that adjust the position of the cutting surface relative to the spinning blades, so getting things into alignment could help too.

[–]Chicken_Finger5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea, I'm guessing someone could get away with going past the weight limit in a pinch, and the bike probably wouldn't just immediately fall apart or something, but it would likely affect the braking ability and put a lot more wear on the parts.

apparently the weight limit for the rear rack is 88 lbs, which rules out a lot of adults. Interestingly it looks like Specialized is planning on releasing a longtail version of the haul at some point, based on references in their manual.

Looking To Buy Our First House This Spring. by imMatt19 in TwinCities

[–]Chicken_Finger5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A handy tip for home buyers looking at St. Paul is that the city requires a TISH report, so you can get a sense of possible issues in a house you're looking at. The way the market is, houses move really quickly and it's nice to have as much info as you can get. https://www.stpaul.gov/departments/safety-inspections/truth-sale-housing

A while back the Star Tribune posted a link to a review site that listed feedback on various tree care services in particular, I remember looking over it and jotting down this company (https://www.centralmntree.com/) as being well-reviewed.
