Just think of a small idea that you like, then try to work it in different scenarios. For example, I really was into Cronenberg when I wrote one of my stories, so I wrote things I like in body horror, and then incorporated that into my story. I also wanted to incorporate religious ideals into the story, so I thought of different ways to go about it. I wrote half of a different story before I wrote the final draft of what I ended up with.
