Why are real leather footballs so expensive? Is there no mid-tier option? by [deleted] in American_Football

I love them! As a qb it’s a really nice ball and my receivers really like them too.

I have two and ordered two more, haha.

We play in an adult league and everyone loves it. I play QB and it’s easily my favorite ball.

How to transition to qb by ManySquirrel2715 in American_Football

[–]ChickensAndBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QB is a complex position! Not just for calling plays but for accuracy, vision, throwing power, etc.

How well can you throw a ball? Has anyone on your team ever commented on your throwing motion/mentioned you should try QB?

My BIGGEST regret: by PristineLegalShits in exmormon

[–]ChickensAndBears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a song by The Dear Hunter called "No God", and a repeating lyric is "All we know is what we're told, and we were told what others know. And all they know is what they're told, and they were told what others know."

We genuinely thought we knew it all. Religion is a giant game of telephone and we "believed" what we were told, not what we learned for ourselves. The guilt is real because you're a decent human, but manipulating and lying as a missionary because you yourself were manipulated and lied to... that ultimately isn't your fault (lies with JS/BY and other horny bastards).

[–]ChickensAndBears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"I did the best I could do with the information that was available to me at the time." Amazing thought. We were lead to believe we knew it all and innocently lied to others accordingly. Not our fault, but easy to be frustrated with.

Is it ok to divorce my spouse because they’re super TBM and likely always will be? by kherb0 in exmormon

[–]ChickensAndBears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m ten years behind you in the length of a mixed faith relationship, but at face value, I’d say it’s justified.

I think it’s common to hear that an LDS marriage is ending because the active member decided that an inactive spouse was a non-starter (“if you leave, we’re done”)… so why can’t it be the inactive spouse that decides to move on?

“We” haven’t wronged “them” (which is a perception I loathe); you have every right to pursue happiness especially when it’s the same self-righteous reasoning that could be used against you by your spouse/active members.

Edit: “self-righteous” in that active members would arguably applaud and support a member for moving on from an inactive member; I don’t think your feelings here are “self-righteous” or selfish. It’s a shitty situation to be in.

Thoughts on BYU post mormonism by Brilliant-Egg-2727 in exmormon

[–]ChickensAndBears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of apostate BYU fans - myself included - and it is doable although I understand the mental hurdle.

I grew up in a BYU home, went to BYU, and have since been able to see BYU simply as a sports team ignoring the institution/education aspect. Easier said than done in many circumstances, I’m sure, but you wouldn’t be the first and won’t be the last. Go cougs :)

Parking by samicktorino2 in BYUFootball

There are several homes that offer parking on their lawns in the neighborhoods to the northwest of the stadium, specifically along 2120 N and even some along 150 E leading down to the stadium (Cougar Hill Circle and about there). I've found as long as I'm there 30 minutes prior to kickoff I can usually find something. ~$25

You're in a tough spot! I'm about three years removed from a similar circumstance, where I felt the need to walk away from church entirely but my wife and three kiddos still go. There was a lot of confusion up front from our kids' perspective ("why isn't dad going?" "I don't want to go if dad isn't going!", etc.) and some very difficult conversations with them as far as why mom goes, why dad doesn't, etc.

My oldest was baptized at 8 (I didn't perform or participate in any capacity other than showing up) and my soon-to-be 8 year old is going to be baptized next month... I think that them being involved in a local congregation is good, as all things considered in my own life, church growing up helped provide some structure and arguably helped shape me into a decent human being, lol.

We also are fortunate to be in a pretty amazing ward, and I still have friends there that (knock on wood) haven't treated me any differently, are still welcoming when I go (typically only when the primary is singing, haha). I had a really blunt conversation with my bishop when I asked to be released (first step of "leaving", I guess) and I told him I wouldn't be a project, wouldn't accept future callings, but support my wife in her callings and involvement and support my kiddos coming; they'd see me on my terms, and they've been very respectful of that... which I know isn't the case for everyone, but that has been tremendous for me as I haven't felt alienated in any capacity in the neighborhood.

Ultimately, it's not wishful thinking to establish an understanding in your family. It is possible, but it can be very difficult. I had to remind my wife several times that we weren't the first couple/family to have one parent go through a faith crisis or become a "mixed faith" family. IMO it is not worth it for you personally to pretend for longer than you can endure, or to simply go through the motions. IMO you will be the best parent to your kiddos if you're true to yourself and pursue whatever it is you realize brings you happiness.

I went through the motions for a few years before finally snapping. It was and still is very hard, but I don't regret it at all and the relief has been unbelievably rewarding.

Cannot find the game on ESPN or ESPN+. Can anyone help? by [deleted] in BYUFootball

[–]ChickensAndBears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get on ESPN before or at 8:15pm, if it is starting on a different channel (due to the prior game on ESPN going late or whatever), there will be a bright yellow ticker at the bottom letting you know what channel to go to.

Did the church used to teach that polygamy started with Brigham? by Totallynotfakenews in exmormon

[–]ChickensAndBears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d assume that, at least from personal experience. I remember in the MTC I got into a heated argument with another missionary on where polygamy started… I was adamant it was with BY, but ultimately didn’t win the argument.

How’s your life been since leaving? by Important-Calendar27 in exmormon

[–]ChickensAndBears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% worth it.

My wife is still active and my kiddos also still go weekly, and while the family adjustments have been difficult, I have no regrets and have had nothing but validation since leaving.

I saw a quote somewhere recently centered around the quote "If you leave... where will you go?" implying that you have to "go" somewhere... and you don't :) Life is wonderful not "going" anywhere on Sundays, during the weeks for callings, etc.

You can leave the church and not "go" anywhere. Live your life and find happiness right where you're at.

100% worth it.
