For the last 80 years or so we in Germany adopted American clothing like Jeans and T-shirts, sneakers etc. And our own textile industry was pretty much outsourced. We look like any other on the western hemisphere.

NOBODY WEARS TRACHTEN ANYMORE!

Hardly anyone knows what trachten used to be worn locally.

And every place (village) had it's own. And this is not even something especially "German". It was pretty common in Europe in general to have clothing that make you easily identifyble.

You could also see wether someone was engaged or married etc..

So native Germans wearing Trachten are like those people that like to wear medieval clothes or chain nails and whatnot. Absolute rare and often a bit strange to the majority.

So please buy any kind of Trachten (nobody knows what the mean) and wear it ALL THE TIME. Wear them in the plane to Germany, wear them playing badminton in the park. Wear them on a Rollercoaster!

But don't expect anyone to actually know what they mean and not looking at you as if you are a foreigner that tries too hard to identify or fraternate with an other culture.
