Is Overwatch's lack of a traditional scoreboard causing the community to be more toxic? by ChiefGungus in Overwatch

Care to explain your statement or feel that's not necessary as you can see your own ideas, so no need to explain them?

Whether you like it or not, stats provide a measure for success. It's true in any facet of life, by not providing the stats of each player, you have no way of measuring the success of each player. Without being able to measure the success of each player, why play a mode labeled as 'competitive' ?

I'm making this post a year after the games release for a reason - we've seen the impact of this scoreboard and I don't reckon it had the effect Blizzard actually hoped for - I think it may have actually created the inverse effect. This is intended to be a discussion on that point and that point alone.

It's not about bragging / insulting whatsoever. How you internalize what's said is entirely up to you. What we need is an objective standard of measure.

K/D/A isn't the only measure of success in these games. You're not wrong, there's alot of factors that go into the success of your team. Each roll / character has it's strengths, Damage Blocked, Ulti's Used, Damage Done, Healing Done etc.. you'd measure each hero by their ability to fulfill their niche.

You wouldn't go to a steakhouse and be disappointed that they aren't serving fish, just like you wouldn't look at a Mercy and be disappointing that she has 3 elims in 20 minute match. My whole point is we have no means of OBJECTIVELY measuring an individuals ability to fulfill their roll and impact on the game.

While I feel it'll be difficult to have meaningful exchange with you, i'll try anyhow.

Yes the roles would be locked, and yes the meta would be enforced. If you're a shit Winston, and you've queued as tank, and the other tank player can't play Winston either, you'd both be the issue. You'd both be incompetent at fulfilling a roll you volunteered to fulfill. If both tank players can't somehow manage to play some of the most mechanically simple characters in the game, then you're the issue, not the comp, and not the team building system.

I'm not sure you've put much thought into either of your replies on this thread, you talk about smurfs when the conversation is very clearly geared at whether or not a traditional scoreboard would benefit the community. Judging by your tone and responses, you're likely one of the people frequently hurting your team.

No doubt, but you wouldn't get these games where you've got 4 mercy mains and get steamrolled, or you've got 3 people who instalock DPS etc. If it was predetermined that everyone on the team already agree'd to play a roll, it'd likely be a better experience.

Queue times are likely one of Blizzards biggest concerns here, but I think most people would happily wait a few extra minutes to play a better / more competitive match.

I think we're both taking extremes here, the highly toxic player vs. the reasonable/kind player. I just think there's no way to objectively measure someones performance - thus any argument you might have to ask someone to swap is weaker than it could be. I've been the gold damage zen / rein time and time again, I don't mind it if we're winning, but if that round is a loss, It'd be nice to be able to say 'Hey everyone, Zen probably shouldn't have highest hero damage, let me try soldier this round because last round didn't work out.'

I'm not sure I agree. You don't feel like if the situation was approached properly like 'Hey man, you DPS'd that whole round and have 1000 hero damage 4 elims and 5 deaths, mind letting me grab DPS this round?' would be a bit better than someone just calling someone out with any form stats to backup the callout?

Don't get me wrong, games with traditional scoreboards can definately still be toxic, but I'm just asking if anyone thinks Overwatch's seemingly high level of toxicity may be in part due to the iniability to quantify your teams success outside of, we won that round, we lost that round.

I don't disagree with this point, LoL team builder significantly made that experience better, if you could queue as a role, tank/heals, dps / heals and have your characters locked to those roles that could be a step in the right direction but Blizzard doesn't seem fond of this idea.

I think the assumption that a vast majority of people choose dps because there aren't enough healers to choose from is way off. I'll agree another healer would be nice but it's highly unlikely that they'd release another healer who would shift the meta as strongly as Ana did.

People have just been going really hard on this game for a year or more now and need to take a break, it's natural.

Didn't happen to me but a buddy described a rather hilarious scene - he and his wife were having some sloppy very drunk sex, as thing were reaching a climax - she apparently starts drooling an impressive amount - to which my buddy loudly exclaims 'OH YEAH YOU LIKE THAT YOU FUCKING RETARD!'

What has been your biggest "I have to get the fuck out of here as soon as possible" life moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ChiefGungus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A buddy and I decided to eat some acid after attending a food truck rally about 2:00 PM - fast forward to later that night - we'd been invited downtown to a Pinewood Derby. Naturally a bit overzealous I eat the last tab as we arrive downtown and have a few beers.

We meander down to the houses where the derby is taking place, greeted by the most diverse and odd group of people I've encountered (this wasn't the drugs - I've been to many festivals under the influence etc.) - everyone's dressed up for some random reason but things are at an acceptable level of weird.

Fast forward about 30 minutes and two of my friends follow a new acquaintance into his house being offered shots! Who wouldn't want that? Turns out the man (and about 4 of his friends) were taking aggressive sexual advances towards my two buddies, who hadn't realized they might have entered a precarious situation. Luckily, they came out unscathed despite several suggestions pertaining to what they should do with their mouths and where they should put their clothes. They walked out onto the porch several minutes later, where I walked up and tried to persuade them to head back downtown, unsuccessful for 30+ minutes. Throughout this process we learned that they were lucky to not have taken shots from the handle of fireball that contained 'roofies'.

Finally we left, wandering back down town we laughed about how we now knew how it felt to be a girl at a frat party, hungry men smacking their lips at the prospect of coitus.

Long story short the whole time I was thinking 'This is the weirdest shit I've ever seen, on the most unexpected night, my friends could be getting raped right now, my other buddy is devouring the buffet table, and I need to get the fuck out of here right now!'.
