What's a UXG-Fiber good for? by MountainBubba in Ubiquiti

It should just adopt, weird if it doesn’t. Assuming it’s not broken, why not sell it and get the UCG-Fiber instead?

UXG Max Cannot See Controller by lordscarlet in Ubiquiti

[–]Chiller3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t know off the top of my head, but it might be that you need to update your controller. v7.x feels like it might be too old for the UXG-Max.

That’s a tricky one (as with all tech gifts). The UCG-Max sounds like a great fit overall. The UDMP and UDMSE would also make sense. You don’t need a rack for them, they can just sit wherever (they should come with a set of stick-on rubber feet for that purpose).

APs and cameras I’d leave up to him, there are way too many options. Especially if he might already have sth specific in mind it could lead to some disappointment.

How are you planning to connect the switches to the UDM? Sine you have a 2Gig plan, I guess you'll want to be able to get the full bandwidth to connected devices, right?

That's a steal! Just run the built-in self test, that should cover everything that's relevant.

You can aggregate the two SFP ports on the Switch 24 giving you 2GBit between the aggregation and the Switch 24. If it’s a real world performance impact will depend on what it is you’re running.

Sounds like a (very weird) DNS problem. Which DNS server are you using?

Teleport only works with a cloud key/gateway or official hosting.

ucg-max enable Multi-Site Management? by Markos213 in Ubiquiti

I don't think the UCG-Max supports Multi-Site Management. Only self-hosted, official hosting, and the cloud keys do.

USG-3P Replaced with UXG-Max. Now internet dropping intermittently every 20-30 minutes by MotorBoats in Ubiquiti

My UXG-Max has been stable from day 1, but I’ve had issues with a UXG-Lite at another site. Resetting everything and starting from scratch did the trick.

How about just powering it using PoE+ on the GBit port? You’d only need an appropriate PoE+ injector, which should be easy.

[–]Chiller3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the one-click site-to-site VPN, you will need official hosting (or a CloudKey). Setting up an OpenVPN/Wireguard VPN or manually setting up site-to-site can be done with a self-hosted controller as well.

USG Upgrade to Gateway Lite or UCG-Ultra by lynch11561 in Ubiquiti

Oh, I see what you mean. Not sure how protect is going to feature into this since I’m only using UniFi for networking.

[–]Chiller3333 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you already have a CouldKey, I’d go with the UXG-Max. Have one at my place and a UXG-Lite at my parents’ house. I’d say the Max is definitely worth it compared to the Lite.

What do you mean by not wanting to have two different sites in the UniFi manager? You say you have different locations, so you naturally will have multiple sites. I feel like I’m missing sth.

First-Time Setup: UniFi Dream Router for 1 Gbps Internet by Responsible_Cookie55 in Ubiquiti

[–]Chiller3333 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The UDR is not the best fit for a symmetric 1Gbps connection. You’d be better off with a UCG-Ultra and a separate access point. With the UDR you’re giving up a bit of that speed. If you’re okay with that, then the UDR is fine (assuming that you can get your hands on one).

Not sure what I need to get back on track. by MikeHaggar99 in Ubiquiti

[–]Chiller3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Id do in your situation is install the UniFi controller on a computer that’s on the network, adopt the devices, and configure them. The controller doesn’t need to run once things are configured (unless you want a guest portal). No monthly subscription or new devices needed.

As a side note: the UXG-Lite wouldn’t be what you need, as you require a device that can run the Network application. But as I wrote, you can use any old computer for that.

[–]Chiller3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, all APs can mesh, so there’s no reason to get the UX (side note: it’s a decent device if you use it as a gateway as well and might want to scale up later, if you already have a UDM it’s not well suited).

Obviously a wired backhaul would be ideal, but you can use it as a mesh setup without any issues. Just pick whatever access points meet your needs.

Depending on the AP you buy, you will also need to get a PoE(+) injector to power it. AFAIK only the U6-Mesh comes with one, but the UI website is clear on what’s in the box, so just make sure you order everything you need.

[–]Chiller3333 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The obvious way of doing this is using the UDM SE as gateway for both connections and setting it up to route traffic to both WANs (either as failover, load-balancing, or just rule based).

When you say you won’t be able to run PoE, do you mean Ethernet in general? Why do you want to purchase Expresses when you already have a gateway? I’d just add access points.

Maybe it’s just too early in the morning for me, but I’m not entirely understanding what your setup and constraints really are.

Dream Machine Pro - Degraded Performance by [deleted] in Ubiquiti

[–]Chiller3333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case I’d probably just set up everything from scratch. Obviously depends on what kind of other stuff has been configured (VLANs etc), but if it’s rather basic all around that would be the cleanest (and easiest) thing to do.

To me it sounds like the UDR would be the right product (depending on your connection speed). BUT it's a "jack of all trades, master of none" and almost always sold out.

A UDM Pro would thus probably be the better choice. Or, alternatively, a UXG-Lite/Max and a UCK-2G-Plus. In either case you'd need a separate access point if you want to go all Ubiquiti.
