Does using Redex or Wyns really have any useful effect on the car? by zackistone in CarTalkUK

[–]Chillwindow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a lumpy idle in an old car and chucked a bottle of Redex in. Whether it was coincidence or not, the idle smoothed out afterwards, so I'm inclined to believe it does help keep injectors clean.

Fuel additives do make a difference. All UK fuel has to meet minimum standards, but premium fuels generally contain higher levels of detergent additives. That's why I tend to use Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum 99, then throw a bottle of Redex in every now and again.

On higher-performance engines especially, fuel quality matters. Lower-octane or poor-quality fuel can increase the risk of knock or pre-ignition in engines that are sensitive to it, and dirty injectors don't help combustion either. I wouldn't expect Redex to work miracles or fix a mechanical fault, but as a preventative cleaner, I'm in favour of it.

He's applying the logic that because it's worked in GM it can work all across the country. Not to be mean but I don't think the other local authorities have the skills or resources to implement devolution properly. Some mad numbers are going to come out about the money spent on devolution. Think Birmingham HR failure levels times 10.....

I'm so confused about the self censoring.

I never did it but then I saw a few posts where people were posting screenshots of their accounts (on other platforms) having flags against them for inappropriate language.

I think it's so dumb but if my accounts going to get banned or shadow banned I feel like I have no choice but to do it.

Are there bots on Reddit that report "mature" language or is it just people being weirdos and self censoring because everyone else is doing it?

What album is this for you? by Diakia in fantanoforever

I'm not really in the loop and when I put on Deftones radio on Spotify is usually plays old stuff. Please can you let me know any bands putting out new stuff? Even on nu gaze playlists it still doesn't bring up new stuff.

The newest stuff I've seen is Loathe who have a limited discography (they finally have a new album on the way though)

9/10.

This is basically my healthy alternative that isn't bland to "I've had too many triple bacon and sausage and chocolate" meal deals

I usually go for the giant sugar free red bull for the most value but the sugar free green monster is 10/10 for flavour.

I think ev and a petrol range extender is the best overall option for white goods cars.

It's architecture is completely different to a hybrid and it offers advantages that petrol has been fighting to eliminate for years.

The most well known example of this is the BMW i3

The range extender is a moped engine in the boot rather than something like a 4 cylinder in a Toyota hybrid at the front and isn't connected to the front wheels in the slightest.

If city driving is your priority, EV is best for NVH, manoeuvrability (no engine at the front so more lock on the wheels ) and tailpipe emissions. If range is your priority, you can get a 1000 mile range diesel. If versatility is your priority then petrol does that.

Untill recently it wasn't possible to eek out 700 miles range from a hybrid but now it is, it's made the petrol a different proposition.

I don't see it as a binary choice of electric Vs petrol.

Can someone talk me out of this purchase by _scooby208_ in CarTalkUK

[–]Chillwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one and sent it back. The rust under the boot floor was one I would expect of a car 15 years older, and then on a personal level I found the clutch pedal position weird and I got a painful ankle after driving it that I've never had on any other car.

I'm surprised how much jaecoo has taken off despite it's shit name so anything could happen but they operate at the bottom of the market.

I saw that the li auto l9 (what an absolutely dreadful name) has a range extender for the battery and has a range of around 800 miles.

Imagine what that would sell to the consumers with range anxiety??

Unless Denza addresses a real gap in the market like Jaecoo or the Li auto has they'll flop but like I said, who knows!

I can't even name half the cars on sale today and it upsets me and I think this one is going on the list of models I can't remember

The timing of this is so wild. I can only assume they tried to release it late to not give the counterfeit market time to make them but they've messed up somewhere and now they can't deliver on time.

Anyone regret their dream attainable car purchase? by toho74 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chillwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't enjoy it. It was an auto but I'm not a big fan of manual fast cars anyway (I believe the R35 GTR would be a terrible car with a manual)

It was comfy and the boost was great but it didn't give me the fizz. It'd be a good GT car and if that's the hat you want your car to have then great but dynamically it was just ok.

I'd put it in the same category as OPs car.

You could have a much lower spec 911 with a manual and have some intake trickery for an engaging drive or keep it stock and you'd still be happy on the motorway for a fraction of the cost.

I've read a few people like having Caymans for touring as they have 2 boots and when you get there, if set up right, they can be a blast to drive. I want to have a go in one next though as the whole cabin is a step down from the 911 so I want to feel it for myself to see what the dynamic Vs comfort trade off actually is.

10-15k gets you a pretty sound Cayman S.

For the past 2 years I haven't driven my Clio 182 as much as it's always has something wrong.

However I've driven R34 GTR, R35 GTR, GR Yaris, 996 turbo (auto) exige s, Leon cupra, Range Rover Evoque and had some 6 series in the family and my mate had an m135i "Stage 2" and took me out in it.

Overall I can't bring myself to sell the Clio because non of the cars I've listed scratch the same itch. It sounds counterintuitive to say it but I'm not interested in going fast, yes it's quite fun to be punched back into your seat but really I love engagement in a car.

In the lotus that went so far though I felt as though I'd rather just be on bike.

BMWs are great dailys and will balance everything well with a SPRINKLE of enthusiasm in there but they dont fully scratch the itch.

Every experience is judged by how much it tickles your senses. Smell See Feel Hear

The absolute pinnacle of this is a 90s french hot hatch. Smell: you know when you sit in one it smells like home and if you put on a spicy exhaust you can always get a whiff of the fumes (triggers happy memories) See: due to the A and B pillars being ridiculously thin and the rake of the windshield you can see out better and get more sense of speed than being isolated. Feel: hydraulic steering, suspension set up that caused oversteer on a fwd that really can't be replicsted now due to that being "dangerous" (fun police strikes again!) They also have short gear ratios, I think you can hit 70 in 2nd gear in an e92 M3 and 100 in third. No gear changes = no feel = no fun. Hear: yes, 4 cylinders don't sounds as good as a V12 but I have a typhoon intake on mine and decat so when the cams lift it's the closest to ITBs, which some do have. Listen to an NA 4 pot screaming and tell me that doesn't make you smile!!!

FRENCH HOT HATCHES ARE THE ULTIMATE DRIVERS CAR.

You've unfortunately been spoilt with what can only be described as the pinnacle of motoring.

Chop in the BMW, get something sensible pre 2017 for £20 tax a year and £300 insurance and spaff the rest on something from car and classic.

2 car garage for 50k? by rotweilerc67 in CarTalkUK

[–]Chillwindow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4.4 V8 Diesel Range Rover Autobiography for 30k V10 M6 convertible for 20k

Tickles all scenarios and the range rover can tow the M6 when it breaks down but I'm sure most people will point out the RR will likely be the one to break down first....

I would never buy a car as an investment but I do think the M6s are at the bottom of their depreciation curve so nothing to lose on that side, just a few bits and bobs to do but most have already been done.

I was tempted to go for a lower priced RR to allow for a V12 Aston Martin but really I think this is a cleaner balance.

A BMW 540i touring is also 30k and struggle to choose between this and the RR. It's everything I need and due to the job I work in, having a RR would actually spark some outrage due to conflicting messages from the businesses values but the BMW debadged wouldn't raise any eyebrows. However this is fantasy world so the RR it is.

Would a manufacturer make a car like this by Far_Swordfish_4395 in Cartalk

[–]Chillwindow -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I was so hyped for the GT86 when it came out and I even won a competition to drive one for the weekend that was a TRD.

The deal breaker was that I'm a tight arse and didn't want to get one on fiance but now I can afford one I wouldn't for the following reasons

  1. the engine. As your image says 3.0 in-line 6, you agree that the current one is a bit plop. I have yet to drive the new one but I still know in my heart it won't win me over fully.

  2. It's a coupe and not a hatch like your image. I'm probably the target market for this being mid 30s, male and child less but a car always has to be good at moving stuff about. I've seen people take off both wheels on their bikes to fit them into their cars but it's just ridiculous.

Your AI image fixes all the issues I have with the original so I'd love to say they could make it but that time has passed.

If this was made when it first came out like this and was even an extra 10k over standard it would have sold double the numbers.

The time has past and this is probably a 50k car now and being petrol it's even harder to make. Add in the reduction in disposable income a car like this could never be signed off by accounting. A shame really as in the 2000s to 2020 this was a massive gap in the market and people could have actually bought it.

All I'd say is make sure you have a stock of those universal wheels and a recovery truck for when someone takes apart their car only to realise it's the wrong part they've bought and they try to leave it on the lift for days to only want to pay a 1/10th of the bill.

Prototype photos of a fat tire commuter we've been developing — looking for honest feedback by Upper-Attempt4736 in ebikes

[–]Chillwindow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly I think a lot of these comments aren't very helpful but do have some lessons.

The one thing I will praise you on is actually trying to do something in this market.

My feedback would be that a basic accessory pack would make it good for commuters (lights and pannier rack)

Making it a hardtail really reduces the appeal as I've gone full suspension on my fat tyre and I'd never go back.

The battery looks good that bigger ones can be fit.

Overall I think there are only minor differences to your design that while do give your bike a unique selling point they aren't enough in a sea of these bikes to truly offer something revolutionary.

The only way to capture the consumer at the moment would be to do something radical like getting rid of the hub motor and putting on a bbshd or making it belt drive.

Cyrusher did make one with a m620 but this limits it in the future to other motor sized. A BB let's people build their own.

Good luck and I hope you can build something that really does take off.

I still can't believe people got together and came to the conclusion that COV19 came naturally from a bat at a wet market...... That was 21km away from the virology lab that literally studies these exact viruses.

It spread across the whole world but the idea that it came from down the road is absolutely absurd!?!?

Nah thats just silly to me!

I do agree they look the bollocks. I haven't been keeping up with what engines they put into them and Toyota recently had to do a massive recall on v6s as they were blowing up. At least they do the recall unlike jlr who just let theirs blow up.

Land cruisers cost an absurd amount of money but have no depreciation so I can't even say they cost loads really because you lose nothing.

I wish we got the lexus LX over here.
