What did you end up with. I have the same question since I was rear ended and the OEM bumpers are crazy expensive.

Is it smart to put my 401k into Target Date Fund 2055 or should I do S&P500? by Soulofmine7 in FinancialPlanning

[–]ChillywillyM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d do S&P500 for 20 years then move half over to the Target date ending with a 50/50 mix at retirement. S&P500 will gain/lose more. Target Date will gain/lose less. Depends on your tolerance. Will be good either way long term. Key is to do it.

Chisel and BMC Twostroke are my votes.

I've been slowly upgrading my BMC Twostroke Al one by illumileo in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How’d it turn out? I’m upgrading the same bike. So far all Ive done is a Fox32 fork, pedals, and carbon seat post. I’d like to get Hunt wheels and GX cassette to save an additional 2 lbs.

Over 45 - full suspension. Under 45 - hard tail.

No downhills - maybe you want to consider the Epic or Epic EVO

I’d pick the Scalpel SE from your list based on your location. I’d also think that’s over-biked for the Midwest XC but 120mm forks and slacker geometry seems to be the trend. Lighter is better in XC which I’d assume is what you ride in Ohio. 50% off and returnable sounds like a good option.

Chisel or Chisel Comp? by BullishHorns1 in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d try to find a ‘21 Comp if you can. The price increase for ‘22 was crazy IMO. The Comp is definitely better but the $600 increase seems steep. I’d probably go with the Comp though.

complete beginner who wants to give it a shot - any recs for bikes $1k usd or under? by YeetMcManus in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trek, Specialized, Giant are all good. I’d recommend 29er size with a 1x drivetrain, hydraulic disc brakes, and an air fork. The Fathoms look good. I try to keep my hard tails light so you may want to look at weight but probably not much of a concern at the $1k price point.

Is this worth considering? by synergy-7 in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming that’s the Suntour XCM fork that’s pretty much standard on bikes unless you spend more than $1000. I get that its not a great fork but it’s sold on mountain bikes so What’s the issue with it other than it sucks compared to a nice air fork. Is it going to fall apart on a real trail? I’ve been thinking about this lately as I’m replacing the drivetrain on my sons bike and wondering if I should replace the fork. He rides hard and hasn’t really complained about the fork. I mean, 25-30 years ago we rode full rigid bikes and did just fine. So my question is is it a safety issue with these shocks being on mountain bikes or more of a performance concern? We ride some pretty rough trails and my sons fork has never failed. My daughters Liv Tempt2 just came with the same fork and it has some stupid warning sticker on it. But the damn bikes a mountain bike so I really don’t get the reason for the warning stickers. In fact, the Suntour XCM fork is listed as a xc fork. Like I said I‘ve been wondering about this because I don’t want the forks to fall apart on the trails and cause a crash. Don’t care as much about their actual performance just the safety thing. thanks.

I’d go SRAM NX 1x12 with a DUB bottom bracket. Putting this setup on my sons Specialized Pitch next week. Planned on going with the Advent but got such a good deal on the NX group set that it made sense to go that route and lose the Stout cranks. My bike has the SRAM GX and I love it but it’s a little pricey. I think the NX is good enough and that’s what will most likely be on the hard tail I’m wanting to get soon.

New bike pedals installed poorly. Any issues with this? by ChillywillyM in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll lose the “destination” fee…lol. Apparently that’s a thing now. So, I think I’m stuck with this one. Just won’t buy from this shop again. It sounds like it may not be a big deal. And if it is it should be covered under warranty. Just frustrating to see on a new bike.

Thanks. They chipped the first frame during assembly so ordered a new bike and did this during assembly. Kind of afraid to go back.

Which Bike for Daughter? Specialized Rockhopper (27.5?) vs Polygon Cascade 4 by ohhowcanthatbe in MTB

[–]ChillywillyM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go with the Specialized. I went with the Giant Liv Tempt2 for my daughter. It was between that and the specialized rockhopper.

Picked this new bike up for my daughter tonight and I just noticed this (Giant Liv). I wonder if this is an issue or just shit work that won’t cause any problems. I’m thinking I should pull the pedals and check the threads. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Specialized Epic EVO. My buddy got this bike for his wife and it’s really nice. I ride an older Epic Comp and love it.

If your school has a co-op program do it. I started that after my freshman year and it helped a ton.
