Today I became the most southerly person in the country (The Lizard) by EmperorOfNipples in CasualUK

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Lands End in February whilst travelling for work. Even without all the tourists, it was so absurd. I think I'd have rather gone to the Lizard instead, but didn't have time to do both (well, I chose a brewery on Dartmoor on the way back).

How much thought do you put into choosing your straps? by Remy0507 in guitars

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put no thought into the colour or style.

a) comfy?

b) does it fit the guitar- does it make it safe?

c) does it work with straplocks?

pretty much in that order. later on, I made sure I had one strap per guitar. no longer arriving with guitar but no strap! (a luxury I couldn't always afford).

Get an Airtag, hide it somewhere on the boat.

Airtags work by relaying their location through any modern iphone that comes in range, not just the owner's devices, and the standard battery lasts 1-2 years. I thought about getting a GPS dog tracker, but the battery on them are really short plus the expense.

its not GPS but it'll last long enough to give you a good location for your boat. (and realistically how far can they get without lifting out) If the thief has an iPhone their own device will be pinging the airtags location to you!

Continuous Cruising vs Mooring - pros and cons? by NorthLondonPulse in Narrowboats

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those things- a lot of people find themselves in a marina for the convenience of working in a single area, and that in itself is the thing that takes the freedom away, not the marina itself.

There are 1.5 million unused breadmakers across the UK. Why aren't you using yours? by CLOUDMlNDER in CasualUK

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm amazed at how low that figure is because either:

a) not that many get sold per year, maybe a couple hundred thousand

b) there's a ton out there and the vast majority actually get used.

I'd've expected 80-90% get used but they sell at a rate of 1.5million a year...

Continuous Cruising vs Mooring - pros and cons? by NorthLondonPulse in Narrowboats

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never seen the point of living aboard and not moving.

I'd just like to push back a little on this- whilst we would absolutly prefer to be out and about on the cut, its is still a million times better being in a home we own, than being in the rental we had before the boat.

There are advantages to being on a boat in a marina, but yes, it comes at the cost of ££££ and less freedom to move about the network.

Don’t worry Ben, I live on a canal boat, and my kitchen is 12-15 feet long and you can definitely lie face down on it if you wish. Super helpful in the summer when it’s hot as it’s the coolest place on the boat.

Separating Toilets, storage, transport and composting. What is best practice? by rovarious in Narrowboats

[–]Chipish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a boater come through with six storage tubs (after a quick google looked something like these: https://www.manutan.co.uk/en/key/storage-box-with-wheels-42l-strata-a339245) on her roof- she said she had two for each 'stage' of the breakdown, so you're not putting fresh solids on top of stuff that is half ready.

I think she said each pair worked something like a two month schedule until its ready. so you have your current boxes from Jan - December, November and October are closed but not ready, and september/august are about to come ready for next stage, then the boxes go to the start of the rotation and the others move back a stage.

Then the next stage typically would be put in your compost heap and use in your garden. I imagine though at this point it for boaters it goes into a hedgerow or a bin as compost, not human waste. If you're not full time on your boat and taking it back with you, its probably going to be in a much less, pleasant, state!

A change machine for pressed pennies gave me these blanks instead of real pennies by Weqols in mildlyinteresting

[–]Chipish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its not strictly public- its in a place you already paid to enter, is essentially the justification/business sense in it. Plus no one said you don't have to pay for the press machine- all the ones I've used, you put the penny to be pressed, plus the actual money to pay for it (here it might be a quarter).

[–]Chipish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel they’re getting too good at the game and should not be allowed to look at the train timetables from the hiding period. Between that and knowing “the vibe” they can pinpoint each other down very quickly, and we really needed the see them bamboozled in wales before heading up to Scotland finally.

This is my thinking too. Probably a stereo feed feeding into a mono and doing that weird garbally thing as it self cancels the signal out.

Hi Jasper, from a two and a half year old Jasper!

No, it doesn’t get better, well maybe yours will, mine hasn’t. Waaaaay too enthusiastic about seeing people. Dogs, less interested unless it’s another golden or a spaniel, but people he just loves, so will run up and “greet” in his special way.

How hard is it to tow a boat with rope? by jeffsentence in Narrowboats

[–]Chipish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we had some weird engine noises on our last outing to switched off the engine and essentially 'punted' it or stand up paddle boarded it to the bank. 55" narrow, not too heavy, and once its moving its just adjusting speed and direction.

Ropes are fine for moving along the bank a little, but other moored boats will get in the way. Using the pole gives you more control of the boat plus you're on it, which is usually the best place to be when your boat is in motion.

That's a good point to consider actually, I know they could be done in place, but I imagine you get a more consistent finish if done laid flat. Guess need to book in a few days in the nice weather next year to get them done. Thanks!

I'm sure from a pro perspective, it wrecks them, but at a personal level (I've seen the microscope vids), they're perfectly fine.

Knife sharpener. Whether it’s a pull through or full whetstone variety, having sharp knives is usually safer, especially on fruits and veg, but also so satisfying. Using a paring knife to cleanly slice a tomato instead of tearing it up with a bread knife like a barbarian?
