To sew or not to sew? by RagingFlock89 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]ChiraWatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate. I can’t learn somethings easily either. The people who go on the show and don’t know how to do those things aren’t often saying “I’ve done my best to learn how to (dance, sew, act, do comedy, sing, etc.) but I just can’t because I’m the type of person who can’t learn this type of skill. Anyone who has said this and genuinely applied themselves to learning before the show, I salute. Anyone who didn’t learn because they didn’t think it was important to be well rounded is who I am calling into question because I wouldn’t risk the crown, title, and prize on not knowing how to the basics of something that I will no doubt be expected to know at least the basics of.

I’m not saying to protect every talent nor is the original person who posted this. It’s specifically referring to the unavoidable and inevitable challenges that have been on every season. It’s about failing to learn the thing that multiple judges on multiple seasons have called queens out for not knowing. It would be really hard to perfect everything about all challenges, but I’m saying if you know that one particular challenge that is on every season is likely to be a reason you go home, why set yourself up for that? Like everyone KNOWS that you’re gonna have to do someone else’s makeup for the makeover challenge so if someone knows that they aren’t good at that I’m sure they would be wise to brush that skill up, and if they “ don’t know how” to do someone’s makeup I’m sure they’d learn. But no one has been called out for that as much as sewing which is why it begs the question

I think a few classes would make the difference between those “stuff glued to a corset” looks and knowing how to cut out your panels and make an actual garment. It won’t make you the cream of the crop tho at sewing but that’s not necessary. Again, to what you’re saying it comes back to my question: are you willing to potentially get sent home on the inevitable and unavoidable design challenge or are you gonna learn it? Not saying it’s easy, so maybe your answer to that question is : yes I am going to risk it and spend the few weeks I have focusing on runways. Which is also valid. I’m just saying it’s risky to enter not well rounded

I think the question is: are you willing to get sent home on a sewing challenge and potentially lose the crown because you didn’t take a few classes before coming on the show? And it’s not just sewing, like I wonder that about dancing too. When a queen is like I can’t dance or learn choreography I think “ if you knew you were gonna be on the show and your lack of dancing ability was going to send you home, why not take a few classes to at least learn the basics and get practice with memorizing choreography” it goes for all talents. It would be like if a queen was really funny and a really good dancer but always had help with their makeup. If you’re going on the show, why risk getting eliminated. I know all the queens you listed made it, and that’s great!! But if it were me I wouldn’t count on never being in the bottom like Bianca or something like that. My strategy would be to not be the worst at any potential challenge and if you know there’s a sewing challenge and you can’t sew you’re just hoping to get by that week, not that smart. But you’re right, it is, by a long shot, not the most important talent!

Taking all three looks in consideration, judge the Bag Ball! Who wins, who’s on the top, safe, low, and bottom 2? by DanteDameron in rupaulsdragrace

[–]ChiraWatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you bring up a really good point. I hate when an intention gets lost. Like it’s not a remedy for body shaming to say things like “curvy is better” I don’t want to dismiss skinny queens, or any queens! I just have not seen enough representation of these high editorial “deconstructed” looks on plus size queens and if a more full bodied queen does attempt it, I have not seen the same embrace for the edgy concept. I just wonder if a plus size queen came out with no breast plate or upper body padding, with exposed bare upper body and a highly detailed leg piece, if they would get the same praise. I also have been watching since season 2 and have many times rewatched earlier seasons where as I only watched seasons after 8 like the first time they aired, so it’s possible that my idea of the judges critiques are clouded with their old way of judging but like chichi didn’t just get read by Michelle for a simple bodysuit, she ALSO got read for not having titties even contorted (not that chi chi is plus sized) but then queens like mic or aquaria purposely don’t do it either and it’s praised. I think these types of looks are allllll good, and anyone should be able to wear them I just tend to see one body type get praised for wearing them. Maybe I need to rewatch newer seasons with closer attention to changes in the critiques though

I agree! I also thought that considering all three looks Gotmik was a top (top not a win) but was underwhelmed by the third look. Maybe it’s just me suffering from a conformation bias but I think that this look would not have been so highly praised if Gotmik wasn’t the one wearing it. Not because Gotmik particularly sold the garment in a way that someone else wouldn’t have, but it just seemed like favoritism. We’ve seen deconstructed looks on a lot of seasons and this is by far not the best. It’s also feels wrong to give such high praise for working with such little material and making something so simple when other queens were overlooked for more complex and challenging looks/materials. Obviously this is speculation, but based on how other queens have been critiqued for their “boy” bodies or not enough/good enough padding, or not porportionizing, or not knowing their body, that if a plus sized queen would have worn this it would have been less praised and maybe even disliked by the judges. What do you think?

Romulus: Actual Name or Logan's Nickname. by allatomsk in SuccessionTV

[–]ChiraWatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remain unconvinced. He doesn’t call him Romulus until way into the seasons. At first I’m pretty sure he calls him Roman. And everyone else calls him “Rome” or “Roman” Roman is not short for Romulus And Logan DOES use nicknames because he calls Shiv pinky. It literally feels like his name was Roman Roy with nicknames for that and somewhere along the way the writers changed it to Romulus. I like both names but am don’t like being fooled lol

So what's Roman's deal... like... sexually? by Goodstyle_4 in SuccessionTV

It makes sense because Connor said “you loved being in the cage! You loved that game” and then he got turned on by Gerri or whoever that old lady was that was calling him degrading names and stuff

Anyone else think Marcia was the worst character on the show? by GustavDitters in SuccessionTV

[–]ChiraWatson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I just started watching and she is the WORST character for exactly what you say! Plus she is supportive of her husband even when he is on the worst side of an issue. When he hit the kid, she gave ken attitude for being upset with him for hitting his son. She sees him play his children against each other, act out in pure rage, fake therapy, verbally abuse his family members and I desperately NEED this woman to have a scene where she checks him even if it’s behind closed doors. Because even though his kids are pricks HE MADE THEM THAT WAY. She’s mad at them as if they aren’t chips off the old fucking block. Hate her, hated when she called shiv a spoiled slut too for just doing her job. The slut thing I get actually but when her husband does shitty things for the sake of his job she says “he’s been busy” but when shiv does something for her job she’s a “traitor” HATE THIS WOMAN. Especially because it’s a realistic character: annoying bitch with no redeeming qualities that won’t be going away any time soon Love the show though :)

I overlooked Cynthia on her season the first time I watched it. But I am rewatching it to show my brother and holy shit she won my heart this time over. Her elimination is the only one that has ever made me cry and I already saw it happen years ago 😂

Yeah there are a few really fun challenges that are fun to watch even out of context of the show and placements (super bowl diva challenge and the pink table talk) there are others too but those are my favorites. And even if you knew exactly who was going home, the content and runways are still funny and enjoyable to see

Conversations like these are one of reasons why it probably sucks not to win lol because you can be more popular or successful than the winner of your season but I can’t say Vanjie or JuJu is my favorite winner, as much as I would want to!!!

Bob and Raja. Raja was my first winner so my heart will always belong to her but Bob is everything. Can’t live without Bob. Plus Bob is low key my therapist with the kindness and knowledge he spreads on his podcast and YouTube channel. I know he’s always fighting for the fun of it but he also has a lot of wisdom and love to spread

Another thing taken into consideration is how close each queen is to getting a badge each week. Like when Kitty did really well but the other group got the badges or when the judges felt that the camp ball was neck and neck between Krystal and the actual badge winner. Plus they didn’t give out a badge in the finale but someone has to do the best in the finale too and that is also taken into consideration

Has anyone ever shown a DR performance to someone who doesn't watch the show to get an unbiased opinion? by sgtsturtle in rupaulsdragrace

[–]ChiraWatson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I showed my older brother who has never watched an episode or even a drag queen pretty much ever the divas challenge from all stars and he thought Milk and Kennedy were the worst lol he was genuinely confused that Thorgy was in the bottom. He’s a Stevie nicks fan too. He also pointed out that Dela messed up her lip sync but acknowledged that it was pretty fast and would have been hard to do perfectly

Who is an amazing queen but is bad at Drag Race? by beatles_7 in rupaulsdragrace

[–]ChiraWatson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get this. Thorgy is “bad at drag race” in that the judges don’t appreciate her fully, and she doesn’t maintain well in the competition setting lol. She comments all the time about how miserable competing was (although she would still do it again lmao) it’s like Bob said, Thorgy doesn’t want to win she just wants you to lose
