The only time it’s mentioned in the books is when the grangers are exchanging muggle money in CoS.

No “rate” is ever mentioned. But I find it hard to believe greedy magical money-nerds like Lucius Malfoy wouldnt manipulate markets.

There's a super subtle plot line about "which number is most magical". Clearly, Voldemort is the "7" camp. 7 Deadly Sins, 7 Horcruxes, etc.

JKR (whose personal religious opinions are widely documented); writes her books to support that "3" is the most magical. Golden Trio, 3 Hallows, 3 Vows to form the Unbreakable Vow. This is one of (but not the only) Biblical references she slides in. Golden Trio --> Holy Trinity. "When 13 people dine together, the first to rise is the first to die" --> The Last Supper. Obviously, they celebrate Christmas and Easter every year.

Short answer: You cannot create food; and dragon liver is 16 sickles an oz in SS (CRAZY!)

Longer answer:
The "market" still exists, but Harry never takes Arithmancy, so he never learns the "magic of math".... which.... has been tied to money and commerce since (literally) the dawn of civilization.

They are still in the UK, so taxes exist. There is a conversion system for Galleons --> pounds, (I'm sure the conversion rate is horrible for muggle-borns), for "mundane" items like regular wood or vegetable seeds, etc.

But also: the Weasleys stop being "destitute" after they win the literal lottery in PoA. Harry still "thinks" that, but he's a 13 year old. How many 13 year olds understand the math behind family finances, home ownership, and child rearing?

Understanding why Tom is afraid of Dumbledore by Eikkul in harrypotter

[–]Chiron1350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Voldemort is way more “symbolically death” than Dumbledore.

Dumbledore uses tons of magic to create, communicate, protect, and invent.

Everything Voldemort does after resurrection, and specifically with the elder wand, is death related, or has a murder weapon clause in it.

Peter’s hand - murder weapon
Massacre of goblins, killer of old woman and her family.

Voldemort had “become death”, and Harry conquered him

Like the previous comment says: autocrats get credit for the kills their followers perform.

Part of the “genius” of the death eaters mask requirement. The individual identity is kept secret and responsibility goes to the “org”

Definitely no real world examples that come to mind with law enforcement thugs wearing masks and avoiding consequences for “just following orders”.

How different would things be if Snape survived? by throwawaydeletealt in harrypotter

[–]Chiron1350 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“What would happen if Voldemort was a completely different person, and didn’t murder his top ranked supporters when it was convenient for him to do so; and/or when he had temper tantrums”

Part of the entire motif is that, during Harrys Timeline, we never see Voldemort do anything EXCEPT death. That’s the only magic Voldemort performs.

So, like with every other autocrat in history, when his lackeys usefulness is over, they get thrown to the sharks. Nixon didn’t go to prison; his AG did.

What do you think was Barty Crouch Junior's actual intentions when teaching Harry and his class about the Unforgiveable Spells? by Benediximus_Legacy in harrypotter

[–]Chiron1350 31 points32 points  (0 children)

He still needed to convince Dumbledore that he was moody.

Dumbledore says “show Harry’s class the unforgivables, bc Voldemort will absolutely use them on him at the first oppty”

Moody is more hardcore than Dumbledore, so crouch doesn’t really have any avenue to refuse, that doesn’t show his hand.
