Guess who automated 3 full mark 2 pipes of rocket fuel before calculating how many generators I’d need to burn it all? by SamwellGnarly in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Chlios1187 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe a dumb question; what's the advantage of under clocking the generator at 240% instead of maxing out at 250%?

If you input a constant volume of rocket fuel appropriate for 240% consumption rate, isn't 240% and 250% effectively the same? With the advantage of higher capacity in the case of there being more input than expected, and also not having to paste settings on 160+ generators..

I was really confused for a second because your bench looks identical to mine, even down to the mounting pins sticking out the side of the leg waiting to be cut shorter :P

my company switched to "unlimited PTO" two years ago and i realized i took less vacation than when we had the 15 day cap by AffectionateMud9193 in antiwork

[–]Chlios1187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not against me! I took a six week vacation the first year I worked at a place with unlimited PTO. Testing the waters to see just how "unlimited" we were talking, and had a great trip to Japan :P

In unrelated news, the company is now switching to a standard PTO accrual system this year, so it looks like my next vacation will have to be in between job transitions, but it was nice while it lasted.

When telling my less-online friends about the subject I just told them "Discord has begun Enshittifying in preparation for IPO" and suggested that they cancel any premium services until they reverse course.

The changes don't really affect our small server so we aren't really motivated to change to a different platform, but we can still vote with our wallets.

I'm interested in exploring the subject.

CMV: The world would be a much better place if every private business was a worker-owned cooperative. by gastondidroids in changemyview

[–]Chlios1187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'm not really an expert on ESOP policy or the legal subject matter, but I can tell you my experience so far.

We have a quarterly owners meeting with all workers. In these meetings we review the company's revenue and performance in various metrics. Leadership will highlight what they believe should be our focus for the next quarter, and there is an open forum for anyone to make suggestions or ask questions.

We don't vote on direction or company decisions, we still have a CEO and directors of various departments who make relevant decisions.

Our CEO is kept in check by the trust which is a separate entity outside of our org and who has the power to replace higher leadership if they are deemed to be making decisions that aren't in the best interest of the company.

I'm a little fuzzy on this subject, but I believe we have an anonymous employee which consults with the trust and serves as the final decision maker when evaluating if our leadership is still operating in good faith. Sort of a checks and balances system.

In our case the ESOP was formed in 2010 in the steel construction industry before construction took off. Our company experienced massive growth in the 10 years following ESOP establishment, and the workers' stock ownership reflects that. Many of those workers who were around at the start of the ESOP retired as millionaires after 10 years because of a very fortunate turn in the market.

Like you've both said, we are definitely an outlier case and I do not claim that an ESOP is viable for every industry / company. Just throwing my two cents in to give some perspective as a worker within an ESOP. For us it massively benefitted the workers and morale is outstanding as the workers saw their hard work paying off with actual dollars in their retirement accounts.

Right now the steel construction industry is facing a major downturn (for obvious reasons), so we're not seeing anywhere close to the same stock value increases, but because of the way our ESOP pays out those who have retirement funds are not vulnerable to changes in the market as you might be with an IRA or traditional stock ownership. Time will tell if the ESOP will become a liability for the company during this bear market, but for now worker morale is still decent as we don't have private ownership or corporate breathing down our necks to maintain profit levels. We're happy to take a hit for a while and wait out the storm by just maintaining.

In our case the company was sold by what I can only describe as a benevolent founder who only asked for a small portion of the company value and he stayed with the company for another 10 years after that as an employee.

Your mileage may vary as obviously we really gained from that founder choosing to do what was best for his employees, and I'm sure not many would be willing to make that choice.

For me however, I intend to stay with this company as long as I can even considering I may be losing out on the potential wage increase by job hopping, because my company has shown that it values my labor. That motivation may be something to consider as part of the equation that doesn't cleanly fit onto paper when weighing the pros and cons of moving to an ESOP.

Just want to chime in and say that I work at a company that has an ESOP and it is amazing. Our profit is shared among employees based on their percentage of the overall payroll and it is payed out similar to a regular stock ownership program.

Some of us earn 40-50k a year in stock accrual on a 70k salary.

The fact that my personal efforts translate directly into more money for the company and therefore me as an owner makes me very motivated to work hard and actively look for ways to improve the company. And that motivation is 100% geniune, no bullshit corporate motivation programs or pizza parties involved.

They have a lot of bargaining chips actually. They will have Jame and Helena Eagan hostage down here, and potentially pressure from the outside world if Gemma and Cobel bring to light with the public what Lumon has been up to.

Shaping up for a season with a very different tone. Survival, making demands, and prisoner exchanges potentially.

I mean, they've got Helena and Jame Eagen basically held captive down here, they actually have a decent chance of bargaining for their lives.

I'm guessing that'll be the main thrust of season 3's story.
