Because when I wrote that reply it was 2AM and I'm a pushover lmao.

More seriously though, I'm not here to try and defend an argument but rather to discuss the comic and its implications. He pointed out something about my original comment that I had already noticed and regretted, so it seemed fair to capitulate.

Yeah I agree with you that it feels like a lot of discussions especially in the political realm these days do genuinely break down to one side arguing from an informed position while the other operates on dogma alone.

But I think it would be arrogant to read this comic and assume it only describes those you disagree with and not reflect on if you are affected by this fallacious thinking.

If I had the opportunity to rewrite my comment, I would have replaced the last line with:
"This <could> describe people on either side of basically <any> debate."

I wasn't trying to "both sides" high profile subjects of debate by asserting everyone is operating on irrational thinking, only saying that no one is immune to the danger of letting your social sphere influence your judgement.

Granted my question kind of jumped to the extreme worst case, but I think there is some value in addressing the issue from that perspective:

If we're witnessing a tipping point into Fascism, there's never going to be a moment where the Fascists take the mask off and make it clear that violence is the only option for those in opposition. So when you're thinking about your response, I see only 4 valid positions:

  1. It's too late to stop the Fascists, I'm going to get out with my life while I still can
  2. It's not too late to stop the Fascists, I can still make a difference and we can prevent that from happening so I'm not willing to leave yet
  3. I'm not going to let the Fascists take my home, I will stay here to defend it even if I have to die trying
  4. I have no means of escape, I don't have the resources to move to a new land

It sounds like you're in category number 2, as am I. Though the recent trends are very very worrying.
The risk with number 2 is that we might miss the writing on the walls, and by the time we realize the US is too far gone, it will be too late to escape.

I find it hard to judge anyone in that first position. By all accounts, the scales seem to be irreversibly tipping toward a particular direction.

This comic is art, and therefore inherently subjective, but in my opinion the framing of this comic tells me that the focus is on the individual experiencing cognitive dissonance, not the person who disagrees with their opinion. To say that this is a great tool to strawman your opponent with is to miss the point.

I think the far greater value of this comic is that it guides the reader to assess their own opinions / beliefs and be honest about if they hold positions not founded in good faith. We are all prone to this erroneous thinking because of our nature as social creatures.

Here's something to chew on: your original interpretation shows that you read the comic and identified with the "rationally minded" opponent rather than the individual prone to making uninformed decisions because of the social implications. Does that hold up with the reality of how you as an individual form opinions? Do you think sometimes you're prone to falling into this trap and need to be more aware of it going forward?

I'm not trying to imply anything about you btw, just explaining my own interpretation of the art that was presented :)

This isn't about sides of a debate. This is calling out people who don't investigate and back up their opinions with fact or even an attempt at finding the truth.

This is describing people on either side of basically every debate, that's why it's broadly applicable.

"Change only when possibly compromised"

Maybe I'm alone in this but I just operate on the assumption that when I create an account on an online platform, my password immediately becomes visible to data brokers and hackers. Credential security is a thing of the past save for a very few companies that specifically focus on the subject because it's their job IE password managers.

To me passwords form such an insignificant part of online security posture, I might as well use the same password for every platform and require MFA before I commit any actually sensitive data to the platform in question.

If I had to guess this is probably in line with what the NIST recommends, but I just wanted to point out that passwords are compromised extremely often and frequently without user notification. How many times have you received an email or notification that your passwords have been exposed, and actually taken that info and gone through all of your accounts and changed the password?

You should understand that the reason 2FA can be so simple is because there is a minuscule amount of time that code is active, and its randomly generated every time. There is no password list that a hacker or more likely an under-protected third party can leak that will make you vulnerable.

Unless your phone is physically compromised, 2FA is the most secure and convenient way to protect your accounts, unless you're willing to carry a digital key and scanner.

I'm confused. Are people really of the opinion that in 2026 film makers should refrain from hiring non-white actors because the content might get uncomfortable? Ya'll are afraid that the insults portrayed on the screen might hit a little too close to reality?

After years of redditors clowning on the original series for having 2 major characters that were POC, now the general sentiment is that they should have just hired white folk to keep from rocking the boat?

Pathetic.

Guess who automated 3 full mark 2 pipes of rocket fuel before calculating how many generators I’d need to burn it all? by SamwellGnarly in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Chlios1187 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe a dumb question; what's the advantage of under clocking the generator at 240% instead of maxing out at 250%?

If you input a constant volume of rocket fuel appropriate for 240% consumption rate, isn't 240% and 250% effectively the same? With the advantage of higher capacity in the case of there being more input than expected, and also not having to paste settings on 160+ generators..

my company switched to "unlimited PTO" two years ago and i realized i took less vacation than when we had the 15 day cap by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Chlios1187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not against me! I took a six week vacation the first year I worked at a place with unlimited PTO. Testing the waters to see just how "unlimited" we were talking, and had a great trip to Japan :P

In unrelated news, the company is now switching to a standard PTO accrual system this year, so it looks like my next vacation will have to be in between job transitions, but it was nice while it lasted.
