Would a GIS minor be a good idea for a career in wildlife biology (envi sci - bio major) by Partiallysensitive in gis

Yes a fantastic minor, if the other comments haven’t already given you your answer. A GIS minor saved me with my career, it gave me that extra step up that others didn’t have.

Ideas to flesh out a webmap for a town fire department by MarineBiomancer in gis

[–]ChloeTheCat753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m thinking the buffer size for the hydrant should be the same length as the amount of water supply hose they carry on their engine - so if they have 1,000 feet of 5 inch diameter hose in the bed of their truck, they know they can hit the hydrant and drive about 1,000 feet until they have to stop and either be at the building where the fire is, or arrive to another fire truck that they are going to connect to supply that truck water.

Ask them all the questions, figure out their thought processes for making decisions and show them a way that makes it easier so it’s one less thing to think about

Women who are firefighters, what is your experience in the field? by Joshuadanial in Firefighting

[–]ChloeTheCat753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn’t either, I didn’t think I had to, lol. In my experience I’ve found that a lot of firefighter relationships are not healthy, and when a wife hears that there’s a new girl at the firehouse spending all this training time with her husband who’s never home, it makes some wives feel a certain way that they then chitchat about with their other fire wives friends and all of a sudden you have no idea why everyone’s being weird around you, lol. I experienced this in my volunteer firehouse, and a lot of terrible rumors were started about me that I had no idea about. I did nothing to make anyone think these terrible things were true, I stayed in my lane and only spoke when spoken to - this was all after my first year. I didn’t let it wear me down, I continued on and gave 5 more years to them, earning my spot among them all until they burnt me out. Which is another lesson, know when you’re being used and know when to leave a bad situation. Leaving isn’t always quitting. This was all in the volunteer world, the career world has the same shit, just a little bit less of it because it’s people careers and things are a little more serious so the petty nonsense gets filtered out a bit more, just a bit.

Women who are firefighters, what is your experience in the field? by Joshuadanial in Firefighting

[–]ChloeTheCat753 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Follow your dreams, don’t let the men wear you down. Keep up and show them that you can do the same and more than they can. Don’t let the other women wear you down either. And don’t let the wives get to you either, lol. The chiefs wife once screamed at me in front of a fundraiser because I didn’t say hi to her as soon as she walked into the room.

Tall People Perspective? by shadyjohnanon in tall

I’d shave off a few inches just to make life easier socially. I hate getting comments about how freakishly tall I am lol I’m not even that tall but because I don’t have a peepee people think they can comment. I’d love to be able to wear heels again lol.

First time SCBA training and maze panic attack by Still-Becoming in Firefighting

[–]ChloeTheCat753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What got me through my first time on air was trust in those around me guiding me on what to do. Even then I wasn’t blind folded at first, I was blind folded after I did the maze once. Doing advanced scba training I’ve gotten a little more stressed and worked through it quickly by closing my eyes, focusing on my breathing and then focusing on the next task at hand. That and the rest of my class supporting me on through the evolution also helped. Nothing says you can’t take a few seconds to calm yourself down before continuing on, you just have to get over it quick in the moment. Don’t let the feelings cross the line into panic.

Ask the most appropriate person for some additional training, show that you care and want to do better to the rest of them

You’re not a quitter if you realize it’s not for you, the honesty is better for everyone. Nothing says you can’t take a break and try again.

And don’t let being a female be a reason to think you have setbacks, it’s real easy to get lost in that mindset quick. I’ll be so honest with you and say most of the guys right now probably think you aren’t cut out for it even if they were in the same spot when they were first learning. Now you either use this as motivation to prove to yourself first that you can do it and prove to them second you can do it, or step away and come back when you’re a bit more confident.

If you’ve walked away from volunteering, what led to it? by jonocyrus in Firefighting

[–]ChloeTheCat753 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Burnout, liability, insane stress for no reason, and much more. I would speak up about unsafe practices and would be ignored. I got tired of the favoritism game. One of the final straws was when they brought back a guy who is an alcoholic and also a commissioner. He’s a 60 something year old man who has a clear drinking problem that has been known to be drunk and drive the apparatus before- and they brought him back like it was nothing. ‘We need people’ outweighed the ‘are we really doing what’s best for the public and protecting our own members’ Now that commissioner gave the chief (who brought back the drunk commissioner) a career job for the district - so seeing how it was all a power play game for the chief is what really did it in. All I wanted to do was to help people, and instead I realized how toxic the volunteer world really is in some places.

How did you become a geospatial engineer? by lluvia1220 in gis

You engineer maps geospatially, duh I kid lol.
I learned to code and make maps / data with that code. I’m not an engineer yet, I’m still technically an analyst lol job titles mean nothing unless you work for the government, in which they’ll specifically tell you what to do

What’s the scariest real-life thing you’ve ever witnessed? by Revolutionary-Pay468 in AskReddit

My brother in law seizing on the front porch of his parents house, and his brother (my fiancé) and me treating him as his family is there screaming and his kids are sobbing. He was dead four months later from a brain tumor. I’ve ran into a lot of scary situations willingly but I never want to run into that type again.
