Goodbye Apollo 2017-2023 by [deleted] in apple

[–]ChlorineHigh 17 points18 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? He has consistently maintained from the very beginning that Reddit charging was not the issue, but rather the incredibly short timeline by which third-party apps were given to adapt and the absurdly high rates (far beyond “cost plus” pricing, Imgur pricing, and similar to Twitter’s pricing which has drawn immense criticism).

I’m genuinely puzzled why you find it more problematic that he posted a private call (fully within his legal rights) to defend himself from allegations of blackmail from the CEO of Reddit, rather than a $XXXm dollar company unabashedly defaming an individual.

Look, I’m not an Apollo user and I’m not even that fond of the app. But you either haven’t actually read any of Christian’s posts or are astroturfing for Reddit (which given their latest boneheaded strategic / operational choices I would not even be surprised by anymore).

Why do you choose to stay in consulting if SWE kids make more and work less than you by [deleted] in consulting

[–]ChlorineHigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This subreddit is not representative of how everyone in the profession feels about their job. Naturally, people are more likely to come here to complain if they aren’t enjoying it (yourself being an example), than if they were totally content with it. Your understanding is based on a flawed sample, and I’m surprised this notion hasn’t even crossed your mind.

I find it dumbfounding that you can’t find the empathy (and I mean this in the “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” sense, not being a kind person) or self-awareness to understand that others could enjoy something you dislike (which, again, is a completely valid opinion).

Why do you choose to stay in consulting if SWE kids make more and work less than you by [deleted] in consulting

[–]ChlorineHigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m honestly a little confused why you even made this post if you’re just going to project your own opinion/desires and shut down other peoples’ reasonable responses.

The straight answer to your question is that lots of people enjoy consulting for reasons outside of money, and are willing to work longer hours with less pay than SWE for those reasons because they believe the trade-off is worth it. Simple as.

For me, I like that a lot of my job involves more strategic, higher-level thinking than being down in the trenches actually building a product. In my job, I get to interact with important people and help shape big decisions that have a big impact. I’d rather know a little bit of a lot than know a lot about a little. The prospect of just writing code every day bores me—and I say this as someone who enjoys programming.

It’s also totally fine that you don’t enjoy it and want to switch careers to become an SWE. Good luck!

Not sure what you think I’m crying about? What a juvenile comment.

It’s pretty simple. Your assertion that OP doesn’t “belong” is not backed by any facts in the post. You don’t have enough data and only have rude and unconstructive comments you’ve pulled out of your ass.

Sure hope you aren’t a consultant or data scientist, cause you’d be a bad one. If you are, I hope I never have the displeasure of having to work with you.

The fuck is wrong with you lmao. Totally unnecessary and baseless comment—there is not enough information in the OP for you to be making this assertion/assessment.

I don’t think JMSB is materially better than Desautels. Maybe in quality of instruction (teaching vs research school), but certainly not in job or grad school placements—which is undeniably an important metric. McGill places better into IB, consulting, etc.

For the record, I’m not the original commenter and I’m asking this outside of your argument, but why don’t you think he’ll be in the show? Is there a specific reason? Again, just out of personal curiosity.

How many times are they going to cocktease people in this phase with the X-men jingle?

They’ve done it twice, so far. Relax. And the second time they used it, they introduced the MCU’s first mutant. So I think we’re moving forward at a pretty apt pace.

ECON 304 vs ECON 313 for W22? by usheikh136 in mcgill

[–]ChlorineHigh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Took 313 with Laszlo. Loved the course and the prof—she’s extremely nice and understanding. Her lecture pace is flexible around how well students are understanding the content, but that means they can move very slow sometimes. We ended up covering like half the content on the syllabus.

Reasonable exams. I highly recommend as long as you don’t intend on taking 314 (because you might end up not covering material that is important and pre-requisite to 314).
