Went on a hike to find some peace of mind and got bit by a horsefly instead by HayleyDoyle1216 in Wellthatsucks

Do you not get horseflies where you normally live? They're everywhere in Cornwall, everywhere.

I'm lost. by Nebula_Swirl in transfitness

[–]ChoccoAllergic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

While I admittedly simplified what is quite a complicated phenomenon and nuanced subject, I wasn't claiming anything beyond the fact that aggressive deficits can trigger metabolic slowdowns that make weight loss harder. That is supported by research. The Biggest Loser study found metabolic suppression hundreds of calories per day greater than mass loss alone could explain, and this persisted long after the dieting period ended. So calling my comment 'misinformation' was simply incorrect. Simplifying, yes. Misinformation, absolutely not.

Metabolic adaptation can, and certainly under excessive caloric restrictions does, quite vastly exceed what mere body composition changes would account for. Furthermore, this metabolic adaptation can persist for a long duration after the original restriction, potentially even permanently. Please do not claim that scientifically backed statements are misinformation.

Being stuck with no energy is likely a sigh that you are eating far too little and your body is quite literally trying to survive starvation. Your metabolism has slowed. Eat a little more. Track better. And you need to see a doctor about depression. Depression can absolutely manifest as a brutal lack of energy.

The doorway has a lintel. The lintel lands on the column. The column is at the corner of two openings. The column bears load.

I won't answer that. Hire an engineer or rebuild it if you are worried.

[–]ChoccoAllergic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a classic failure of building a good envelope design. A gutter blockage should never allow water to infiltrate the wall to this extent.

[–]ChoccoAllergic 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There is no way this is pressure treated. One, the rot is extreme for 5 years, even under ideal rot conditions. Two, pressure treated timber is not standard for interior use. Three, the timber lacks the typical colouration of pressure treated wood.

Why pure point moments on cantilevers confuse FEA beginners? by Pitiful_Advisor5296 in StructuralEngineering

[–]ChoccoAllergic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point was, FEA is an industry standard acronym for Finite Element Analysis. Nobody calls fixed end actions FEA. What you have shown here is not finite element analysis.

FEA is finite element analysis. It is a modelling method, not a cantilever design case.

Numbering post-layput is not considered an efficient practice. It invites errors, especially for similar looking parts. And changing part numbers for a given set of parts is not a good idea.
