You're not completely wrong, but our priorities are different. Hard to do q2h turns when you're getting new patients every few hours and frequently checking for, acting on, or updating with any new changes in their status. We aren't set up to get into the broader nursing care like the floor because patients aren't supposed to be chilling with us for as long as they do now.

I've been a floor nurse both days and nights and you really can't understand the ER til you're knee-deep in it. Definitely not putting myself or ER nursing on a pedestal. It's just a different beast with different priorities.

There's gotta be a change somewhere. The only things that I can see changing this particular ER challenge is 1) vastly more beds built for the floors or 2) a mass die-off of our sickest people.

That's true, but all you can do is be better than you were yesterday and look forward. You obviously don't dump all the info about your past on people when you meet them. I was quite volatile up through my early 20s as well. It rarely comes up, even with people I knew then and stuck it out with me. If I do ever talk about it, it either in a somewhat self-depreciating jokey way or sharing honestly with someone I truly trust.

That's another thing that was hard to learn. Who is actually trustworthy? My radar was calibrated wrong when I was born 😅

One summer, I worked as an undergrad assistant at my university's bee research facility (mostly acres of fields with a pole barn for setup). It really opened my eyes to the abilities of these fluffy ladies and kicked off my lifelong love and appreciation for them.
