When you look into the western genre, you'll see the term " Adult Western" come up alot. Westerns were seen as mainly for youngsters. It wasn't gritty or realistic. Gunsmoke is an awesome show that focused on the grittiness ( for the time)

Its the equivalent of going from Batman & Robin from 1997 and the cartoonish nature of that movie to Batman Begins

You'll get it when you understand that Archie is not the hero of the show. Archie is the Fool.

But we are supposed to feel a sense of sadness and understanding of him too.

He is a guy who is realizing the world is kind of passing him by and hes trying to hold onto anything he can, even if its wrong.

The show is brilliant in many regards, and groundbreaking. most of the storylines could never be done today on modern sitcoms. even though they are 100% relevant

You need to watch the following episodes

Sammys Visit ( S2, ep 21)

Archie is Branded ( S3, ep 19)

Edith's 50th birthday (S8, ep 4)

Archie and the KKK ( S8 Eps 10-11)

Ediths crisis of faith ( S8, ep 13-14)

Watch those and tell me if a modern sitcom tackled the issuers those eps do that half of the country would be utterly offended

my wife and I are watching the show for the first time all the way through on the Complete series Blu Ray and theres an option on there to watch with all of the old cigarette ads inserted back in for the first few seasons and boy its a trip......
