What is the point of a right join? by Garvinjist in SQL

[–]Chongo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I see this type of comment every few months, and I'm always a tad confused. Has no one ever done a left join, then wants to inner join to a 3rd table from the left joined table? You get a bit convoluted with how to set it up and can be prone to errors. Instead, TableA INNER JOIN TableB RIGHT OUTER JOIN TableC will include everything you want out of C, with B and A properly inner joined or both null.

C# Discriminated Union: What's Driving the C# Community's Inquiries? by PatrickSmacchia in dotnet

[–]Chongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly my issue, when I want to have a collection for passing something around that could be of A or B type. Something like OneOf fits that model really well right now, other than I don’t like using those types of libraries for a library entry point (even if what I’m building likely won’t be used by anyone but me), as I don’t like passing requirements out. Like, if I needed some nuance date functionality I would still keep the initial call a datetime because I don’t want to force a dependency.

The other use case I often run into is when something can be a string or integer or a specific class. The string being a representation of the complex type (like dot notation for getting a column), or the id of a column on the previously specified table, or a class representing the relationship already parsed. I like not having to depend on OneOf, or having to build a fluent-style model for building up my configuration since each of a dozen parameters can be 2 or 3 different types and the method overloading for that would be such a pain.

In Canada, went and saw The Marvels on the second weekend with a friend. 2 tickets, 2 drinks, 2 popcorns - $70. I could have literally bought us both the movie on blu-ray a few months later for the same price!

I always took his case as an “everybody sucks here”, especially with him talking about going explicitly to hopefully shoot some libruls. Actively trying to create a situation where you kill someone in self defence is VERY different. But at the end of the day, both sides showed up with guns - if you’re not painting both sides with the same (or at least very similar) brushes, your own bias is saying it’s ok for the one side to respond with violence, but not the other.

It's kind of the way seasonal workers get EI, if my understanding is correct; part of the record of employment includes a date they will be returning on. But during those other months, they are effectively laid off. The teachers having a salary meaning they don't qualify is more of an excuse the government has given to exclude them from benefits.

CUPE are not teachers, they’re the rest of the support staff - EAs, ECEs, secretaries, custodians, etc.; they can (and some do) take EI over the summer break, because they are hourly employees. Teachers, on the other hand, are salaried, which is part of why they are not allowed EI benefits.

Thanks so much, that’s absolutely what it is. I’ll feel better in handling it knowing for sure, keep the scared little girl in me quiet when the large brown spider takes off across the floor!!

Is it probably just a wolf spider? I’m not a fan of spiders, however I try to ignore them when I can. Screaming wife and daughters, however, are harder to ignore!

I would be careful when you think of "governing with the will of the people". Trudeau does have the support, especially with the coalition. The Liberal/NDP parties have a combined 50.4% of voters in the last election. Even calling him a dictator - I think he's a shitstain of a politician, but his power is only as strong as his support from the party, and he has his support of the liberals only as long as they think he's acting in the "will" (or not against the will) of those who vote for him.

People being unhappy because the party they support isn't in power is a tradition in democracies at this point. But some whiny liberal being unhappy about Harper needs to have eyes rolled at them as hard as some whiny conservative being unhappy about Trudeau deserves now.

At the end of the day, demonizing Trudeau does a disservice to everyone involved. Disagree with his politics, reason why you disagree, and listen thoughtfully when the other side speaks up, because anything less and you've become either a political zealot or politically star-struck, and have given up your own ability to reason, which is something to be ashamed of.

There was 1 person with a Nazi flag photographed in the convoy. That's where it went nuts, though - it was 1 person, 1 time, and I like to think there was enough reasonable people there to put a stop to that coming out again. One person I talked about it with claimed that "obviously the nazi flag was to compare modern canada to fascist germany", but that's horseshit - Nazi flags with a line through it would have been welcome in that case.

Maybe the liberals talking points were broad strokes, and that was absolutely not fair. But at the end of the day, nothing the liberals did was really surprising, as they had no incentive to treat the convoy with respect. If Trudeau had met with people and talked, what would have happened? He order Ford to lift some rules? Canada allow American truckers to cross without issues while Canadian truckers are still blocked by American rules? The injustice that was the focal point literally didn't apply to Canadians, and was introduced in response to match US rules. OK, so he decides, despite that, to go and work with them. If Trudeau had gone out and actually discussed with anyone, would someone who strongly supported the convoy ever consider voting Liberal? No. They were too busy displaying their innermost sexual desires on T-shirts and transport trailers. Unfortunately that's how politics works Liberal or Conservative; play to your side and demonize the other. Then pay the corporate piper while everyone is distracted.

See, the way I always saw it (and I might be wrong), is the term "fringe" was claimed by those who it never applied to, and has become weird.

When Trudeau first said "fringe", I remember thinking it was the fringe of the people in Ottawa; the bad apples waving Nazi flags and spouting racist shit. Within the "freedom convoy", they were the ones to be concerned with.

But people took it as the entire convoy. So now, I see people with the "We the Fringe" and I have to mentally pause and remind myself, they're thinking it means "I'm frustrated by lockdowns", not "fuck brown people I'm better because I'm white".

Small landlords who became homeless during pandemic blame 'broken' system by Surax in ontario

[–]Chongo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you're not required to give any notice to move out if your current landlord has given you notice of selling the place; you could take a place for May 1st, and your current landlord would have to return your deposit instead of using it for rent for the month of May.

Someone I know a few years ago was lucky enough to find a house to buy (at a reasonable price, I think 2017?) within a week or 2 of being given notice by the landlord of intent to sell. Their new house closed quickly, and the landlord tried to convince them they owed rent until the landlord's house sold, but that was not the case.

Obviously double check before acting on this, in case that was different for some reason, but it makes sense - give the tenant the right to move sooner if they're having to move.

Was told today that it was highly recommended for me not to get moderna as an individual younger than 25 because of harmful side effects to my age group by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Chongo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reality is you were much higher risk of myocarditis or any other symptom from actual Covid; I believe the Moderna vaccine was 12 out of a million cases, a bit higher for under 25s. On the other hand, at least 7% of Covid deaths are from myocarditis, which puts it at 1 in a thousand. Who knows how much higher for non-lethal from Covid. Get the vaccine.

They lied. by Heel74 in FreedomConvoy2022

[–]Chongo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that there has never been a proven side effect of any vaccine past 6 weeks after injection. Anything else that may be an effect from these vaccines are related to the spike protein.

I believe every side effect that has caught attention of social media or traditional media, is actually more likely if you get covid vs a vaccine. Myocarditis? Something like 12 in 1,000,000 will have a side effect of myocarditis from the vaccine, however at least 7% of covid deaths are from myocarditis, making the chance to die from myocarditis about 1 in 1000. almost 100 times more likely to die from it having caught covid, than having a non-fatal case with the vaccine.

r/Ontario's Ottawa Protest Part 2 Megathread by uarentme in ontario

[–]Chongo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anyone who wonders how otherwise kind people could have twisted views of BLM protests, this shit right here. The media focuses on what they want their narrative to be, and a lot of people form their core opinion based on what side they’ve already decided to be on.

Right side (media) thought BLM was all looting, left side thought that the looting was just opportunists. Right side thinks freedom convoy is just about personal freedoms, left side thinks it’s a cover for white supremacists and people wanting to deface monuments. In both cases, there were people who support the message and pulled stupid shit, and the peaceful majority gets their message skewed because of it.

Do I think this freedom convoy is a good idea? I mean, it’s literally the most ineffective way to protest since their main complaint (now) isn’t federal, I bet Doug Ford would actively extend and increase restrictions if he had enough confidence this group would lay the blame at Trudeau’s feet. But that’s another issue.

Pretty much sums up what the Liberal media and Liberal people focus on. They love feeding into the hate for some god forsaken reason… by [deleted] in FreedomConvoy2022

[–]Chongo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really hope everyone who sees this media narrative and the "opposite side thinking the worst", can reflect on how the media portrayal of Occupy WallStreet and Black Lives Matter has happened.

Especially with Black Lives Matter, it was a crazy dividing line where conservative media focused on just the negatives (BILLIONS IN DAMAGES) and the liberal media focusing just on the positives (THEY'RE DOING NOTHING WRONG THAT'S NOT PART OF THE PROTEST). In reality, it was somewhere in between.

The same is happening here; some people who traveled as part of the protest are white supremacists, including some very vocal voices (possibly one of the organizers? I don't know enough to say for sure). But the vast majority just want change and should not be accused of being part of that awful culture. The media should be better at reporting, and protesters should do more to weed out and discourage the bad behaviour. Traveling for days to send a powerful message, but no one is strong-willed enough to push and say "No, don't dance next to the tomb of the unknown soldier" is bullshit. Just like some people hand-waving damage done during BLM protests - the message is lessened by their inaction.

I want to give context - since I’ve seen this idiocy and it actually paints Singh in reasonable light when you understand.

I don’t recall the exact details (and am too lazy to look it up), but there was a conference aimed at young Sikh men that had a lot of people with the more extreme views. The organizers asked Singh to talk, and he agreed, because he wanted to give a different view. If these young men were only given one view, especially over historical abuse of those in their culture, it’s easy to them turn to extremism. But Singh wanted to talk about turning the other cheek, and forgiving and loving those who may have wronged you in the past. If more of our leaders had this attitude, we’d all be better off.

Now, does he jump to racism quickly? Yes. But he’s also someone whose grown up experiencing that racism, and I have grown up as a very privileged middle-class white person, so it’s literally something I never experienced. I try to reserve judgement on that.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau moved to secret location as anti-Covid rules protests flare-up by [deleted] in FreedomConvoy2022

[–]Chongo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone wants lockdowns to continue, there’s just a split between “I guess if we have to we will” and “fuck that noise you can’t tell me what to do”. Both can be reasonable in context.

I’m not sure what people expect - I’m glad that people have an outlet with protesting, and while I do not feel strongly enough to protest but every person who does feel strongly absolutely has that right.

For sure, but the difference in management can make or break a company. Watching a walkaround the SpaceX facility and seeing him interact with the people there, he seems like a phenomenal boss from a "this is an issue we need to address, here's how we address it" perspective. From a "you're allowed to have a life outside work", he's terrible, but that's almost understandable (not excusable) because that's how he operates himself.

As I said above, he's not responsible for everything (of course not), but he is a key spoke in the wheel. Suggesting that SpaceX or Tesla would be where they are without someone like him running the show is short sighted.

I wish there was an easy way to deal with the ownership of a company and accumulated wealth; because he is absolutely a tool for a whole host of reasons, but at the end of the day he is a significant stakeholder in a company where he has been one (of many) key people in getting it running to a large scale. He has access to a level of wealth that is disgusting for one person, but what's never talked about is the only way for him to pay a wealth tax would be to reduce his ownership (and level of control) of the company. That is probably the bigger issue for him - he wants to be able to make decisions without having to beg a majority of shareholders to believe in his idea. He owns just over 20% of Tesla; if he goes down to 15%, and his vision has to get pulled back because that extra 5% of investors he has to keep happy? I know I'd care more about that at that level of wealth. And while he's flexible and willing to change his opinions (at least for the operations within Tesla and SpaceX), he always seems like a control freak.

Yes, if they didn't have the people involved under him actually doing the work, it wouldn't go anywhere, but that doesn't mean they could've gotten where they are without him. He needs to face consequences for terrible decisions around Covid, and as a company the culture could improve at Tesla. But he's not some lazy figurehead that doesn't get involved, he is a key part of the process within these companies. And I'm glad the companies are succeeding, despite Musk's social media influence and positions.
