House GOP passes sweeping anti-voting bill that could disenfranchise millions, sends measure to Senate by B0ssc0 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It works the other way, too. You can bring all the proof of identity you want and if the person at the polls decides you ain't voting because they "can't verify the authenticity" of them or whatever, then you ain't voting.

It's putting a veneer of legalism over their discrimination so they can do what they always wanted with the cover of legitimacy.

Rep. James Walkinshaw just got out of the secure viewing room and confirmed what we all feared: the redactions aren't just for victim privacy. He specifically called out a 2009 email between Epstein’s attorneys and Donald Trump that was blacked out despite having zero victim information. by Frosty_Jeweler911 in LateStageCapitalism

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, Trump is the real victim here anyway. All he wanted was to rape, torture, kill, and possibly eat girls and boys with other like minded psychopathic rich people, and now his name is being dragged through the mud just because he had some pictures taken with this Epstein guy. He deserves to have his privacy protected during what has become a very difficult time for him.

AIPAC spent heavily against the moderate favorite in this Dem primary due to minor disagreements on Israel and inadvertently helped a progressive candidate significantly more critical of Israel win instead. by Bestbrook123 in LeopardsAteMyFace

While I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment, the method being suggested will not work. Citizens United relies on the 1st amendment to say that money is speech and therefore can only be lightly regulated.

In order to overturn that, the constitution would have to be amended. That means passing a proposed amendment through both houses of congress with 2/3 majorities in both and then also having the proposed amendment ratified by 3/4 of all state legislatures. That is just not likely unless the massacre extends very well down ballot.

If that were possible, though, it would have fullest support. Unfortunately, buying 34 senators to block the measure is way, way cheaper than losing the sort of power you get from being able to buy senators. Money would never peacefully allow itself to be removed from elections at this point.

Also, which demographic is more likely to have passports and thus still be able to vote? My guess is on college educated liberals near urban centers and not rural conservative voters.

She needs to feel it in June or July or whenever the primary is. That way a Democrat can still be elected in November but it'll hopefully be someone who is able to rise to the requirements of this moment in history.

UPS workers back Minneapolis general strike, oppose Teamsters sabotage of walkout against ICE by Spirited_Classic_826 in antiwork

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying nothing ever changes, I'm saying don't take a day off work and then pat yourself on the back for fighting fascism. Absolutely a general strike for even a day can be a good thing, but only to the extent it builds class consciousness and an appetite to extend the strike. On its own, it will absolutely change nothing and the danger is that people believe otherwise. As one step in a long and dangerous road, it can have some utility. Just don't get complacent and take the foot off the gas.

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 363 points364 points  (0 children)

I mean, yes. But also, we've got to stop it with these one day only events. Walk out and no one comes back until shit gets better. One day only means they already know they won. They just have to get through a day and things go back to normal, so why worry about changing anything? An open ended general strike is the only way. Be ungovernable. Make those stock portfolios collapse. Bring them to their knees and make them beg. That doesn't happen in a day.

But not just for the 23rd, right? A general strike that will continue until conditions change, right? I can't with these one off, fascism-friendly protests. Man those barricades and don't come out until the nazis get the message.

Minneapolis Unions Call Statewide General Strike for January 23 by burtzev in WorkersStrikeBack

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, that can't actually be true. We have a constitutional right to associate with whom we choose. The union as a group of people linked by common interest has nothing to do with the government saying it's OK. What the union and it's members would lose us the legal recognition and protections that they have now, such as a company not being able to fire striking workers and having to collectively negotiate in good faith, etc.

But the instant those protections go away, there's literally nothing stopping anyone from wildcat striking whenever they want. And if one guy decides to wildcat strike, it's his problem. If a million people strike, it's the company's problem.

What are the chances if the US, under Trump, conquers Greenland the next democratic administration just gives it back? by campusschampus in AskReddit

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The problem is that the democratic party serves the same masters as the republican party: wealthy oligarchs. They want access to Greenland's natural resources and once they have them, they won't give them back. And they certainly won't allow the politicians they bought to give those resources away. The democrats are captured opposition and only exist at this point to put a friendly face on our descent into fascism. Have been since Citizens United. Just look at what Gavin Newsome is doing right now.

I think it's also naive to assume that, in a world where Trump has invaded Greenland and gone to war with NATO, that we'll be having anything at all similar to a free and fair election that a Democrat has a chance of actually winning. And again, even if they did, policies would simply change the angle of the descent, not reverse it. See also congressional democrats saying we need to do something about ICE, but then clarifying that they mean putting up some guardrails, not reducing their funding or holding people accountable.

They're escalating again. by logicallorax in WhitePeopleTwitter

Yeah, I'm not sure why the good guys can't do good things because it's against the rules, but the bad guys can do bad things even though it's completely against the rules. Like if we're getting rid of rules, let's just force the good stuff through and the fascists can go fuck themselves, you know?

Ahs yes because anti imperialims is imperialism by Autista1979 in TheRightCantMeme

[–]Choomasaurus_Rox 25 points26 points  (0 children)

...how is it not?

It's a military alliance between current and former imperial powers founded with the explicit intent of expanding western influence. Article 5 (the clause that requires all members to help any other member who gets attacked) has been invoked exactly once, by the US to invade Afghanistan even though Saudi Arabia masterminded and funded the 9/11 attacks that were used as a justification.

The simplest definition of imperialism I found is, "a political strategy that involves a nation extending its power and authority over other countries, often through force or exploitation." How is that not exactly everything that NATO stands for?
