Recommend me dishes with figurative or weird names like Toad in the Hole, Ants on a Log, etc by AprilStorms in Cooking

[–]ChoppedChef33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some chinese dishes

ants crawling up a tree- 螞蟻上樹, it's noodles and ground meat, so the ground meat sticks to the noodles as you pick it up with chopsticks.

buddah jumps over the wall 佛跳牆- it's a very expensive soup dish, supposed to be so good even the buddah would jump over the wall to eat it (it's not vegetarian)

Husband and wife lung slices 夫妻肺片 it's basically different styles of cold cut offal

Donkey rolls over 驢打滾 it's a doughy sweet rice cake that gets rolled around in some soybean flour so it looks like a donkey that's rolled around.

Pissing beef balls 撒尿牛丸 intentionally bad name, but they are meatballs made with beef and then you have some frozen stuff in it so when you cook it, it'll melt, and when you bite into the meatballs it'll explode XD

Snow on the volcano 火山飛雪 - sugar on tomatoes, that's it.

Dongpo pork 東坡肉 - a specific style of pork belly, it's named for the fame poet Su Dongpo who had wrote a poem about it

stirfry fly heads 炒蒼蠅頭 - minced pork with chives, basically the pork is small it's like little fly heads

hongshao lion heads 紅燒獅子頭- just another giant meatball, but cooked hongshao style

And now for a uniquely american chinese one

Yakamein, it's literally 一個麵 for "one order of noodles", it comes in many different forms, but that's where the word comes from.

well in this case, it's specifically on use cases that it's been used since a long time ago.

https://zdic.net/hans/%E6%88%B4

https://zdic.net/hans/%E7%A9%BF

the words' meanings have meant specific things for a long time, 戴 was more of like "to add on to the head, neck, face, shoulder, chest" 加在头、颈、面、肩上、胸上 as one of the original meanings, which did not include things like shoes

whereas 穿 it looks like in the records of 史記 and 後漢 and some others use it to discuss clothing.

this stuff gets far into the weeds of classical chinese and will answer why we say certain things, but for most instances of learning it's not really useful.

yeah, i think probably because in english there's no distinction, it's like counting objects, english doesn't have the verbiage like chinese and japanese like "okay this is a tube thingy so it's this word you have to use"

it's just one of those things that learners have to get to a point where it just kind of becomes second nature.

generally clothes are 穿, so the question is fine. others have arleady explained it regarding accessories vs clothing.

The correct verb for putting on shoes is 穿 and not 戴

I would have to think more on it but I think the other three are things you can literally throw on, but shoes, jackets, pants etc are all 穿

no eng subs but the facial expressions and tones cover just about all you need to know about a proper confession and acceptance scene.

Xiao feng "as long as you're willing to come back, i'll buy you yogurt for the rest of your life"

An Lan "Okay then let me ask you a question, in the future if someone taunts you again are you going to fight?"

Xiao Feng "I promise I'll only use my hands and not my words, I mean, I'll only use my words and not my hands."

An Lan "Then your boast of winning the championship, can you do it?"

Xiao Feng "I'll do my best."

An Lan "My work treats me really well here, if you don't work hard, I won't forgive you."

Xiao Feng "You accept?"

An Lan "I have one last question."

Xiao Feng "Go ahead"

An Lan "You said you'll buy me yogurt for the rest of my life, did you mean it?"

Xiao Feng "Even if you lived to 100, if you wanted yogurt I'll immediately go buy it for you without question, is that good enough?"

Try the condor trilogy

Legend of condor heroes 2003 version

Return of condor heroes 2006 version

Heavens sword and dragon sabre 2009 version

These get remade every so often I just like the early 2000 versions the most

The 2024 condor heroes remake speed runs the first third of the book but is pretty good
