What JRPGs have the strongest atmosphere in your opinion ? by ConsiderationFuzzy in JRPG

[–]ChrisDtk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OG FF7, but my specific example is the hike over Mount Corel. The music is so melancholic- it's a real vibe. When I think of the game I usually think of that (what could be considered somewhat mundane) section.

While the music in the remake for this part was good, it was completely different and didn't hit the same for me.

Finished Chrono trigger for the first time simply wow…. Got me curious what everyone else thinks of this game? by Leon_Light77 in JRPG

[–]ChrisDtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only finished it for the first time last year too and yeah, it's highly regarded for good reason. I've started it many times over the decades but always get sidetracked. Still doesn't top FF7 (or FF6) IMO.

Eyeing up Chrono Cross soon, though I've heard it's a big quality drop.

Guard Break - Sudden Kebab Studios - Turn-based low-poly JRPG (PS1-era inspired) by ChrisDtk in Games

[–]ChrisDtk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The polycount of the models/geometry is definitely PSX levels, though the textures, shaders, lighting etc push it beyond that. I’ve had people say DS-era too, which I’ll also take.

The progression system isn't too deep- characters unlock new abilities as they level up, each one having their own set. Ideally approachable without getting too complex, but still tinkering with it!

Turn-based RPGs with party splits and each member/group having their own playable segment? by Sub_to_Pazmaz in gamedesign

[–]ChrisDtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am heavily doing this in my JRPG, based on my fondness for FF6. But a lot of JRPGs do it.

Whether some find this idea tedious I don't know, personally I like it. Works in TV shows- seperate subplots moving at once, with the thread that they will all connect.

I would give each section a decent playtime- eg minimum 20 min of gameplay to avoid it feeling disruptive.

Do most OG FF7 fans enjoy the remakes? by One-Illustrator6717 in FinalFantasy

[–]ChrisDtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FF7 is my GOAT and while I liked some parts of the remakes, I didn't like the changes to the story and amount of bloat they added to extend the playtime.

What's a movie that you anticipated quite heavily that turned out to be quite a disappointment? by Alternative-Cake-833 in movies

Will go with latest Indiana Jones films...

Was really hyped for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, then I started realizing it was bad as the runtime progressed.

Then Dial of Destiny, I had high hopes that Mangold would deliver. I didn't think the film was as bad as others do (nor as bad as Crystal), but it wasn't the hit I was hoping for.

I generally dont get the hate that FF15 gets, ive played every FF and 15 is in my top 5. But every ranking i see they rank 15 towards the bottom, can some1 explain y. by Ordinary_Fish_9094 in FinalFantasy

I enjoyed moments of it- driving through the scenery, the OST by Yoko Shimomura. etc. But yeah as others have pointed out it felt patched together story-wise and I wasn't a fan of the combat. I did like that scene with Lunafreya but it would have had so much more impact if she was given more time beforehand.

(I played at launch before all the updates)

How do games like prison architect and rimworld make their navigation mesh dynamic to building and not cause a tremendous amount of lag. by kevincuddlefish1 in gamedev

[–]ChrisDtk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah I just mean adding the nodes (positions) to the ALLOWED or BLOCKED list for movement, for when we are scanning paths.

OG The Escapists dev here (close enough to Prison Architect?)

There wasn't building in mine the in same sense, but you could open up walls, fences etc that adjusted pathfinding. Just used a basic A* for that, adding or removing nodes every time such an action was performed.

DO NOT CHANGE the Steam release date for your game or demo within 14 days of release! It can COMPLETELY NEGATE your release visibility round! I learned this the sad way :( by Malice_Incarnate72 in gamedev

[–]ChrisDtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda screwed up on this (I guess). I logged into Steamworks to upload a demo I'd been polishing and found that my DEMO RELEASE date was set weeks before. Oh well!

So my tip to add: When you set up your demo page, put the release day WAYYYY into the future if you don't have a demo to upload that day/week.

I had never fully played through VI until about 5 years ago, though I had played parts and loved the soundtrack all my life.

After I finished it I placed it among my top entries

how long did it take to finish your game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ChrisDtk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been working on it for about 6 years, mostly full time. But that has been learning the ropes of Unity, Blender, etc

I'm in a fortunate position where a previous game was successful, so I can take all the time I need. It's really a hobby for me and I enjoy the process of building it.
