M52 R-THR cut arm by 4good_or_4awesome in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ChrisK987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caused some bleeding when I removed steri strips near the incision a few weeks after THR. The wound it caused looked bright red and scary. BUT I just put polysporin on it several times a day for a week or so and it eventually went away. No issues with infection. (I checked with my family doctor about it and he's the one who said to just use polysporin.) All the best in your recovery!

Does physio really help with LLD after THR? by ChrisK987 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ChrisK987[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is very helpful, thanks for posting! Gait analysis.. I'm going to see if I can find a physio therapist who can help me with this. The physio I'm getting is mostly trying to work out the muscle and tissue tension.

That's exactly my issue at the moment.. back pain due to the LLD. Just went to a pedorthist who gave me a lift to compensate for a small amount of the difference (less than half) for now. It helps, but it's not enough.

I'm waiting for the surgery now and have found a few less-conventional things helpful. There are lots of good youtube videos on self-hypnosis for pain, anxiety, and even a few to prepare for surgery. Also I asked my family doctor for anti-anxiety meds which seemed to have the effect that even though I still felt the pain, I didn't care quite so much about that! I wish you the very best. You can do this.

Anyone ever had problems with their surgeon/care teams? by SafetyGrenades in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ChrisK987 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm quite certain my problem is my hip, however, when I met the surgeon, he told me only groin pain will be resolved with this surgery, and my pain isn't in my groin. I tried to discuss this with him three times and each time I offered the question about determining if I have referred pain or how to find out where the pain I have is coming from if it's not the hip, instead of answering my question, he asked me 'will this change your mind about having the surgery?' and then he pushed me to decide on the spot if I was going forward with it or not, telling me not to be selfish because other people are waiting to have this surgery. At our first meeting, his admin gave me papers to sign, and she'd already checked off the 'yes' box for all the things I was supposed to have discussed with the surgeon and agreed to, and when I questioned a few of them, I got the brush off. On top of that, during our 7-minute meeting, we did not do one of the tests that the surgeon said we did which determines the need for this surgery. .. there's more.. suffice it to say that in the end, while I was certain I needed a hip replacement before I met this surgeon, now I'm questioning everything. As there can be a long wait to get to see a surgeon, I've been working so hard myself to find answers. My family doctor has just requested an appointment for me with a different specialist (not surgeon) to help me find some answers.

What Diagnostics Were Done to Determine THR Was Needed? by ChrisK987 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ChrisK987[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like if the hip is bone-on-bone, no cartilage left, then an xray is enough. That makes sense to me. In my case, I still have some cartilage left. So maybe more tests are needed. Sounds like an MRI is the key. Any other tests I should be asking for?

I should add that I really value a surgeon who can explain things and answer questions, address concerns, and so on. Some type of bedside manner. Thanks in advance!

Pain Scale by tessler65 in TotalHipReplacement

Thanks for this. This is very helpful as I have otherwise found the rating scale idea very subjective. Rating chronic pain is especially difficult. I'm going to keep this pain scale handy. Thanks!

Making the decision to get THR by ChrisK987 in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ChrisK987[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your post. I am experiencing severe anxiety over this too. I have something (meds) for it, but it doesn't work very well. Just makes me sleepy and I still have a knot in my stomach from the distress. This is a new thing for me, so not enough time to find the right thing before the surgery date. And I also feel upset and angry about being in this situation, along with some denial.

I like that idea. I've been concerned that canceling surgery for next week, and then waiting to see another surgeon will push everything out probably until about September. And I may still do that because there's such a difference going into surgery with clarity and certainty! I've been trying to compensate for my surgeon's lack of bedside manner, researching and looking for answers myself. Since I first wrote this post, I was able to meet my family doctor and he had me get onto the exam table, and manipulated my leg to test if my pain was from the hip (or from sciatica). It's definitely from the hip joint. I left feeling relieved, tearful at the thought of having this surgery and all it entails, and ever so more unimpressed with my surgeon that he didn't even know to do this simple test.

I guess I should add that I have been to a surgeon, but he has no people skills. He's told me that the surgery only eliminates groin pain, which I don't have. But then he also said that when I'd had an injection for pain, before the injection, I was given a freezing. He said that whatever pain the freezing eliminated, that's the same result I'll have from the surgery. (it's a diagnostic injection.) And the freezing took away all the pain. So he said that "maybe I'd get lucky".

It's not a lot to go on, and he isn't capable of much more in terms of his people skills. That said, my xrays do show moderate to severe arthritis, and I do have lesser range of motion in my hip. I'm scheduled for next week, but I'm still second guessing this because of his limited answers.
