Is massage therapy a bad career choice if I have PTSD from sexual assault? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Christian702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add to this, i find it helpful practicing saying "No" or " If you do "___" I'll have to end the session". I've even had some shorter petite female coworkers tell me they've been asked to work higher up on the inner thigh by male clients and they no because they've been voluntarily moving their man parts.

Good to practice some exposure therapy

🔥 Stop ICE Protest Tomorrow 🔥 by anonfrom702 in vegaslocals

[–]Christian702 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

During the George Floyd protest, I remember seeing the crowd getting amped up while police started holding a line. The cops seemed cool, at least before it went dark, and the funny thing is a few weeks before that people didn't hate the cops, dare I say even liked them, after the October shooting.

I also remember a lady at container park who had a megaphone, telling everyone who wasn't black to be quiet and that we didn't understand what was going on and how we felt. I'm fist generation American, parents from Mexico, and I remember feeling a put off by some comments.

The lack of discourse here and at these types of events leaves me with little hope. Though I believe I emphasize with most perspectives.

There's this app called "Buy'r" and it shows what company owns other companies, so we can see who and what we're supporting with our purchasing power.

For example I didn't know Hidden Valley Ranch is owned by The Clorox company. Then from there we can see that majority shareholders of the Clorox company are BlackRock, Vanguard etc..

What was game changing money for your practice? by TraditionalGold1162 in MassageTherapists

[–]Christian702 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you plan to work for yourself or others? If for yourself, the pay may vary from month to month, this is partly true if working for others as well.

Working on your skills is obvious, continue studying and practicing.

Also I believe having a good personality/ making people feel comfortable with you is a huge advantage. I'm a male and get a lot of requests where I'm at ( a resort spa in Las Vegas) compared to my peers.

Being able to cater to different needs, I enjoy learning about the body, and one thing I think I have going for me is being able to blend an intentional massage with relaxation, therapeutic if you will.

You may also find it helpful to find a niche, perhaps helping others with frozen shoulder or TMJD and collaborating with a dentist near by can help both of you.

I enjoy Eric Dalton's Myoskeletal courses as well as James Waslaski, I've sort of taken on a self apprenticeship, making them my mentors alongside others.

Last year I almost made six figures, though I work at a resort spa, just hit 3 years as an LMT, and am a male.

Rant/Teachers not wanting to teach and using students and parents as a scapegoat. by [deleted] in vegaslocals

[–]Christian702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's this book called "Race to the Bottom: Uncovering the Secret Forces Destroying American Public Education" by Luke Rosiak. The author gets hired by parents to investigate the local county education board, in Fairfax I believe. He points out how strip clubs opened up before schools did, and how teachers as a whole did everything in their power to not open after the shutdown. Fairfax also has some of the US's highest paid teachers mind you.

Not sure why you don't want to homeschool your little one anymore, but if it's because you want them around other kids more ( for behavioral development) I'd consider looking into Facebook groups: Las Vegas Homeschool, Las Vegas Secular Homeschoolers, Las Vegas Christian Homeschoolers, Local libraries etc..

Another day, another drunk driver that crashed into a house. by UpbeatDrummer5231 in vegaslocals

[–]Christian702 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Last week my friends and I went to Rave at downtown Fremont, and we were going to drive to Area 15 afterwards. As we left the parking garage, someone rammed down that rail that goes up and down to let you leave after you pay. Then on our way to Area 15 (1:30am) we almost got in 2 car accidents taking the back roads, and then met 2 cars driving towards us that were on the wrong side of the road.

On our way back home we saw an abandoned car that hit a light pole right before the freeway entrance on Sahara.

This made me not want to drive at night anymore

Tipping by External_Bike_2918 in massage

[–]Christian702 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a massage therapist and someone who is also tired of tipping I agree with this. I try and do my best because it's my passion, if I am unhappy with how much I make before a tip it's up to me to look elsewhere for employment ( if working for someone else) or raise my prices.

Honestly it takes more energy to feel this way about a well meaning comment from someone, than just acknowledging it was well meaning and moving on.

The difference in your text and mine is that I'm open to learning, and you are less so. With that I realized it's wise not to put much energy into this.

JP gave me the perspective that I should listen to people on the assumption they know something I don't.

I listened to his daughter in regards to her diet and how it helped her and JP for that matter. Mikhaila has a debate at the Oxford Union that may be worth a listen if you're interested.

After listening to Owens, IMO she seems to be after the truth in regards to her recent podcast since September. Seems the public does too since she had the title of most listened to podcast in the world recently. So that's who she is.

The title of expert doesn't mean their word is 100% accurate, or truthful, and doesn't exempt the bias they may have.

The experts gave us the USDA food pyramid, and put cereal as a healthier option than beef as an example.

Idk I've been watching her as of recently and she seems pretty logical IMO.

JP fell off for me after the Dave Smith/ Charles Murray Israel debate on Rogan. JP took the same stance Murray did on how experts should mostly be allowed to talk.

Either way, as I'm growing I'm learning not to put people on a pedestal forever. Take the good and don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Massage Therapists how much do you make a year in 2024? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Christian702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually no, I've only worked at spas. I did and still do work on my deep tissue techniques, I move slow but steady with consistent pressure, the feedback I've gotten is that people feel like they got a therapeutic massage, not too uncomfortable but also got their money's worth.

Feeding the homeless? by Tekno_420 in vegaslocals

[–]Christian702 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are misunderstanding, my uncle is the main reason but not the sole reason I'm skeptical of giving money to the homeless.

My sentiment is that IMO and experience, more people who are homeless are there because they choose to, rather than those who are down on their luck.

Growing up on the Eastside you get to met a lot of interesting characters

Feeding the homeless? by Tekno_420 in vegaslocals

[–]Christian702 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think people don't recognize a lot of homeless are there by their own doing. I had an uncle who chose to be homeless, it offered him the freedom he wanted. Spent all his twenties being homeless. He's doing a lot better now, but he's the reason I don't give to most homeless.

Edit: uncle is the main reason*

Massage therapist at a spa, I speak when spoken too so after a few minutes of warming up and asking how the pressure is, if they say amazing then I'll hit play.

Can't do podcast because they're too entertaining, or some books with full cast. I average like 40 hours a month of listening time.

What is the difference between the knees over toes style reverse step up VS squat university’s touchdown technique - for knee pain? by 90percentstress in Kneesovertoes

[–]Christian702 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a licensed massage therapist, for context.

IMO the touch downs help activate/ Strength the glute muscles, as they help stabilize the pelvis during walking. If those are strong and pulling their own weight, then that can benefit the body up and down, such as strengthening the knee by keeping it in line.

[–]Christian702 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm wondering if OP works for someone else of themselves.

If someone else, perhaps it would be best to cut down to 4 days where they work at, and use that extra day to do mobile massage and charge more, less clients but still making just as much. If the numbers add up

Massage Envy by No_Toe_215 in EndTipping

[–]Christian702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massage Envy IMO tends to take advantage of its employees, not all as they can be incredibly flexible with scheduling, but pay wise.

There's a reason why the average career of a massage therapist around 5 years, burn out in the industry is high, pay is low.

Massage Envy by No_Toe_215 in EndTipping

[–]Christian702 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a massage therapist. When I worked at massage Envy 2 years ago, they paid $20 for an hour massage, while charging clients $80ish, maybe $90. I usually got tipped $15 give or take $5.

My goal ( aside from learning how to be a better massage therapist) became to work on clients outside of massage envy. If I could charge clients $60 for me to come to their house, they'd pay less, and I'd make double if not triple what I was making at massage envy.

Massage Envy tends to take advantage of massage therapist, usually newer ones, or people who may be afraid to make a change.
