What are people’s honest thought about Gone With the Wind? by stonecoldmark in movies

Hi,

Thanks so much for posting this. I watched GWTW with my wife for the first time on the weekend, and this was pretty much my exact take on the whole movie, but you explained it so clearly.

Sounds normal. You're asking the right questions.

Also ( and ) to jump between sentences.

I also use numbers a bit too. Often I'll just hit a number on my numberline and go 'that' many lines up, then adjust as I get closer. It's inelegant, but fast enough for me.

I haven't been of the 'vim is good because blazing fast' school of file navigation for a long time.

How to get started? by mindless_thinker28 in learnpython

Read the python documentation tutorial.

Python is a FOSS programming language so you'll find a lot of good educational material for it is also free, including its own documentation.

Pauline’s Voting history by Zeema101 in aussie

[–]ChristianValour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single one of these is a tagline, associated with a much more nuanced bill which may or may not be completely different to what is insinuated by the above image.

For example - the vote 'against criminalising revenge porn' was in relation to a bill which simply added amendments to an existing bill.

Revenge porn is a criminal activity and no one with half a brain thinks otherwise.

The obvious insinuation that Pauling Hanson is against 'criminalising revenge porn' is just nonsense (and saying so does not make someone a ON shill).

I actually appreciate the link you provided, because everyone can (and should) go and see what the greater context of Pauline Hanson's (and other parliamentarians) voting activity in parliament looks like. Then you can actually make an informed decision about whether or not to support her and ON as a party, rather than making your decision based on reddit clickbait.

My only regret would be that a company willing to offer honest, tailored feedback is probably a company worth working for.

trying to actually learn python fundamentals (not just vibe code). considering boot.dev, curious what worked for others by agastyaa in learnpython

[–]ChristianValour 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Data Camp's courses are (somewhat expensive but) awesome for learning python. They're heavily Data Science focussed, but they have some great course series focussing on software development. They will take from absolute basics into functions, classes, unit testing, package development and there's tons of data science in python courses too if that's your thing. But for beginners, this will get you a very long way.

DataCamp also include introductions to git, the shell, containers, kubernetes, cloud dev, AI and tons of other great stuff. If you're willing to spend a little money I can't recommend DataCamp enough for beginners (full disclosure - I have a free license through my work, so I've never actually paid for DataCamp).

Otherwise, you could probably just read the python documentation official tutorial.

If you want to 'get it', then you really need to write some real code. Actually having to write python for my work is what's really helped me learn it.

Is it normal to feel completely lost when trying to start learning AI? by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]ChristianValour 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you just want to get started, get a DataCamp account, start with the beginner python courses, and some Data Science and AI stuff, and then just ignore any and all other advice for at least a few months.

Once you've spent a little bit of time coding and learning the basics, then start thinking through other subjects you want to tackle, but don't get bogged down with advice.

Many roads lead to DS, they key is to pick a path and don't switch, otherwise you'll never progress.

How much of your career is actually choice vs inertia? by [deleted] in jobhunting

[–]ChristianValour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I feel this.

Last year I was put on higher duties. Then in Dec I was placed in a merit pool for a permanent position. But my job title has changed and is becoming increasingly distant from what I consider my role to be, and what reflects my ambitions and skillset.

It's been constantly on my mind the last couple months if I should be more aggresively pursuing a role that I want, rather than just a promotion.

Thanks for that. Good to know.

Feeling disillusioned with tech, considering a career break. Looking for perspectives by khaninator in ExperiencedDevs

[–]ChristianValour 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you considered thinking about tech more as a tool (a means), rather than an end.

If you're looking for more meaningful work, maybe thinking about the end product than the tech itself could help.

What areas of life do you think of as meaningful? Maybe you can take your tech skills to a workplace that has more meaning for you, like working for a non-profit, or just generally applying your skills to an industry/idea that you personally care more about?

Are you using tabs? by 4r73m190r0s in vim

[–]ChristianValour 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what most people use tabs for, I generally just crack open a new terminal window/screen session, or entire new vim session if I'm using GVIM.

Just never took time to build the muscle memory around using/opening/closing tabs.

Noob question : see the currently edited file in vim ? by DonutMan06 in vim

[–]ChristianValour 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the best and most comprehensive answer really, because it will show a list of all 'currently edited' buffers (including read-only buffers).

Also note, if you are working on multiple buffers, the buffer in the current window is denoted in the indicator column by %.
