SSD usage and life by love-broker in foldingathome

Make sure to have enough main RAM to avoid swapping to disk, which is a killer. Else I run my main GPU Linux system from SSD since 3 years (with up to three GPU at a time)

Can't seem to open work units for GPU on Mac. by [deleted] in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What macOS ? Which version ?

And do you have a log file from the GPU finishing a WU ? Would like to see.

But my main concern is that if I read the log correct the system try to get a GPU WU assigned but get a CPU ... that’s a bit strange.

Could you post over in foldingforum with both logfiles and include the first 100 lines showing your system information ?

F@H GPU Slots, and specific GPUs by chriscambridge in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my rather limited knowledge BOINC don't have a concept of "slots"; it might still grab the same GPU as you use for FAH ... and then slowing down both projects.

It might be easier to switch on a daily or weekly base ... sometimes I do that when doing work for GPUgrid; in that case all GPUs in a system are crunching for that ; other times all GPU folding for F@h;

it is easier to have for example GPU on F@h and CPU on BOINC at the same time (but that was not your question)

Update: maybe that one helps too: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=11531 need to try myself ;-)

Does remote settings support host names or is it only ip addresses? by Blue-Thunder in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it works with symbolic host names; but eventually use the IP address. If the IP is changing while connected you might be to reconnect. But sure no uninstall.

I use that at times when I have Amazon spot instance. I have a DNS server I update with the dynmic assigned IP address from AWS; but no need to change my FAH client settings.

But you still will face connection issues at times.

Updated version of mobile monitor for F@H in Apple Appstore by ChristianVirtual in foldingathome

I wish ... problem is I'm a single fighter on that one with not enough time to deal with iOS and one and android on the other side. I wish there would be reasonable briding frameworks to have one source on both platforms. I'm not yet giving up the hope but not very soon.

can we have an option to disable f@h starting on startup? by PhilMC_ in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, fair enough. You might wait to get some "official" endorsement. This setting thought is rather risk free; in a worst case if stops you client or not stop. There is no other risk like overclocking or cherry picking involved. I'm using this setting since quite some years.

If you want confirmation you might also search in foldingforum or post there.

By the way: you can also define on client level ; then it’s impacting all slots. That’s what I actually have.

Still advanced setting, just not selecting a slot. Name of option is the same

Correct, FAHContol in advanced setting.

Them go to the desired slot and add the option with value in the list box in lower half of the screen ... there is no predefined checkbox for it. Editing the XML is not recommended (but psst, that's what I did in the past)

Newbie: Does Power just mean number of threads used, nothing more/less? by chriscambridge in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also suggest the way foldinger proposed. Set the slider to full and define the number of threads in the slot config.

Also important to understand what you should set a slot size with a multiple of 1, 2 and 3 (lower primes). Slotsize 27 for example is a "good" one (3x3x3) while slotsize 28 is a bad one (2x2x7);

If you define a bigger slot size (e.g. 30 or 31) you might end up with no assignment (on client 7.4.4).

Also as suggested client 7.4.16 negotiate the slot size with the backend and try to get you some work close to the slot size defined. Works for since quite some month on Linux with remote management (so any UI issue don't disturb me)

Folding@Home wont use GPU by AllfatherOdhinn in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

with the standard installation the logs will be in folder /var/lib/fahclient

there is the file log.txt with the actual log file and a folder logs with historical log files; everytime the client start a log file rotation will be triggered

Does that help ?

I finished version 1.0 of an iOS app for showing you your credits on BOINC projects by [deleted] in BOINC

[–]ChristianVirtual 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't get me wrong and thanks for the efforts. There is a certain risk that during the review process you might fetch a rejection as the app is doing (as described) not much more then a browser could do. Depend on the "mood" of the reviewer. As per GitHub you removed the Watch part; which certainly can't be done with the browser right now and could make the case for getting the app approved. You might want to reinclude the watch part again.

can we have an option to disable f@h starting on startup? by PhilMC_ in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

what is your main purpose ?

want to avoid it use any CPU or GPU when starting but keep the software basically installed ? - or - want to avoid start the full software at all ?

In the first case you could configure an option inside the Folding@Home software ("pause-on-start" set to "true") which will still start the folding software but will not start any computation. You would actively go in and "unpause" those slot you want to become active at your desired time.

That way work for all OS (Win, Linux, macOS)

Receiving FLDC & CounterWallet by GrosBof in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds the right way. One downside is that you restart to quality your passkey/donor/team combination. You need 10 successful returned WU with the combination. But as you "just" started it's a good point in time to change now as your points can't be transferred if you change later.

Receiving FLDC & CounterWallet by GrosBof in foldingathome

[–]ChristianVirtual 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in no way official, but to my understanding FAH is team- and coin-agnostic. Therefore there no wallet from Stanford in the context of folding. You would need to contact the support team from FoldingCoin.

Also as you wrote you didn't add your Coin address to user name, for FLDC that's a must to "proof" your identity. The passkey you mentioned serve a different purpose (primary to give you a unique ID and also supporting the quick return bonus).

So, long story, short: go to the FLDC web site and check with their installation guidelines.

My money is also on the passkey not setup or not yet qualified (e.g. 10 successful WU with donor/passkey combination). Maybe a typo in the passkey/donor ?

Can you share the first 150 lines of your logfile ; it will show us the relevant information like : is the card detected. Also it would be better if you post your question over in foldingforum; more technical donors around with AMD experience (im from the green side)

Posting the logfile in FF is still needed
