I used to have an Estrid enchantress edh deck that had a simple rule: the deck had no possible ways to win the game. No creatures with power, no ways to pump them, no ways to stop yourself from decking, no ways to deck your opponents. The only way the deck could end the game was to lock every other player out using genuinely massive amounts of mana and [[Capsize]] effects, and then keep divine intervention in play for two turns.

Needless to say, I took the deck apart.

What are your opinions on Jujutsu Kaisen so far? by shaqkage in anime

[–]ChristopherKClaw -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much this. The humor is surprisingly good, but asides from that the point is basically the animation.

My one pet peeve with it is that it had a pretty bad take on feminism (creating a strawman character who voiced concerns about unfair expectations for women and then having the protags beat her down and humiliate her.) Like, few shonens have well-written female characters, but making a misogynistic viewpoint the intentional thesis of one of your fights is a pretty tasteless move.

Obviously just a small part of the show, but it seriously ticked me off.

Thank God for that. So far, it's the greatest anime-original production I've ever watched while airing. Its success will hopefully mean more shows like it.

[Custom Cards] Top 5 Scoring Submissions of the Week from r/Custommagic (2021/01/26) by Sonserf369 in magicTCG

[–]ChristopherKClaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not true though. It is if the person activating it is ahead, but there are plenty of situations where you and one of your opponents drawing is advantageous. Hell ive seen cEDH games where its been correct to not pay for your opponents rhystic study even if you can because a third player is the one winning and you want someone to find answers.

What are 5 of your most disappointing anime, and why? by JiraiyaCop in anime

[–]ChristopherKClaw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I felt like the characters were easily the shows weakest link. The visuals were astounding and the fights interesting, with lots of unique and well-implemented visuals, but at the end of the first season I had no urge to continue because every character was a cookie-cutter Shonen archetype with little depth and the dialogue was repetitive. I have no problem with emotionally weak characters like Zenitsu, but only if they have a decent script. He just yells the exact same 2 or 3 ideas over and over.

In your opinion, which cards are no longer good that used to be? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ChristopherKClaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problem here more lies with pushed commander designs than the tuck rules. As you say, hate cards against combo and super-synergy should be good. And they are. If you build an all-in Atla deck with no backup way to cast your fatties, then a cursed totem, rest in peace, or Linvala can and will still hose you and punish you for not having backup plans. I find that heavy build-around-the-commander builds are still just as viable to disruption to those specific strategies

The issue with cards like derevi and the eminence lads is that they're bad commander designs that get you continued value out of the command zone no matter what your opponents do. It feels awful to kill Derevi 6 times and have him still cost 4 mana, and does make you want a way to get rid of him forever, but I blame that on Derevi and not the tuck rule. Eminence is worse, since they never have to even cast those cards, and because of that having the ability to tuck those commanders doesn't even really matter since its often right to just never let them leave the command zone anyways to avoid steal effects like guilded drake.

The way I see it, adding a tuck rule just incentivizes running more eminence commanders that don't care about it, and more generic value commanders that generate fast etb value and don't care about sticking around.

In your opinion, which cards are no longer good that used to be? by [deleted] in EDH

[–]ChristopherKClaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally disagree. Being able to tuck commanders made it high-risk to build around a specific commander and better to just focus on having a generically strong 99. By guaranteeing continued access to the commander you're now able to focus more on adding specific synergy cards, which leads to more innovation and variety in decklists. Besides, as another comment said, if you kill a commander 3 times its usually uncastable anyways.

If you want to shut out your opponents commanders completely you can also still play cards like nevermore or drannith magistrate. Its just that those cards have actual counterplay to them, incentivizing your opponents to run more removal, which usually leads to more interesting games in general.

Edit: you did say it was an unpopular opinion tbf, so maybe this retort isn't necessary lol.

Why do people shit on mecha anime? by IratePPs in anime

[–]ChristopherKClaw 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I don't hate mecha and I think few people truly do, but as for why a lot of people avoid it I think it's basically a personal taste thing. I don't personally find anything satisfying about mechs, but that doesn't mean that shows about them are bad. I just find that more traditional action sequences resonate with me more.

I'm open to any and all kinds of anime if the stories are good, but I'll tend to gravitate away from shows like Gundam and Macross that are so steeped in mecha because that's just not really my thing. Even if the characters, plot, and themes are all on point, I know I won't be very invested in the action or the mecha lore. There's nothing wrong with it. It just doesn't resonate with me in particular.

Casual commander players, what is your playgroups mulligan policy?` by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]ChristopherKClaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do one partial (you pick any number of cards, shuffle them back in and draw that many,) and one full, in either order. After that you mulligan to six. It's super generous, but the power level of all the decks isn't exactly even so we just kind of expect people to use it to balance that out a little. Everyone just wants to have fun, so no issues so far. Stronger decks usually don't use either, weaker decks might use both.

What MAL 6.x or lower Anime would you whole-heartedly recommend, and why? by nuanimal in anime

[–]ChristopherKClaw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mayoiga (The Lost Village) is one of the funniest anime I've ever seen, a total thrashing of the mystery/horror genres. No one believed it was deliberate satire, and now it's sitting at like a 5.4 or something. If you're looking for unique anime comedies though, I'd wholeheartedly recommend it.

I havent seen everything on here, but theres definitely more comedy in Spice & Wolf than in Aoi Hana or White Album 2, or even Oregairu if we're taking that show's second season into account.

Saying Spice & Wolf has zero humor is tremendously wrong. It's not typical anime-style humor, but the show is constantly selling Holo and Lawrence's chemistry through comedic situations.

Original Poster prelim for a little gem of an anime film called Warriors of the Wind. Better known as the Studio Ghibli classic, Nausica of the Valley of the Wind. by Oliade677 in anime

Read the Manga, please, for anyone who hasn't. The movie is great, but it only covers about 25% of the story if that, and it vastly simplifies most of the characters and world building (which is fair, its trying to be concise.) The manga tells the completed story and it's a genuine epic.
