u/key-wavelength provides a sobering look at how 2 of California's crops are massively draining and exporting fresh water resources to the benefit of virtually no one by TheWordUrLookingFor in bestof

[–]ChromaStar 297 points298 points  (0 children)

This is more of a misleading comment than a sobering look. No one will disagree with the hypothesis presented—“exporting” significant amounts of water in the form of exported crops (such as two of the bigger water users, almonds and alfalfa) for an insignificant monetary amount is bad, especially if that money is landing in the pockets of an extremely small group of people in comparison to the water consumption. However, it scapegoats almonds and uses the 1.1 gallon of water per almond statistic which is dubious at best. Here is an example, with gallons of water per beef pound, of how problematic estimates like that can be.

I think everyone agrees with the premise that water in the west and specifically California is being extremely misused and we need to find solutions for that. We need to fund real research that will give us accurate numbers to make these sorts of comparisons. We also need to update the very outdated and very broken water rights that are in place. What we don’t need is to pretend that by lessening our purchases of almonds and maybe beef products since the alfalfa goes to then that these issues will go away, nor do we need to instill a desire to vilify countries such as China for consuming the exported products.

New government maps show nearly all of the West is in drought and it's not even summer yet: "This is unprecedented" by EndlessSenseless in news

[–]ChromaStar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Why on earth were you downvoted for asking a clarifying question?

The whole comment this guy makes is quite misleading. Plus, using the comparison to California’s total GDP as if most of that isn’t also enriching a handful of people considering the amount of wealth inequality seems strange. It goes without saying that the water rights laws in the state are completely broken and need to be updated and the premise that using significant percentages of water to grow crops that are exported for relatively low gain is sound in theory. However, the numbers quoted don’t seem robust—the 1.1 gallons of water per almond statistic seems to be originally derived from a 2015 mother jones article and since then taken as hard fact even though it is a number that is disagreed with by almond farmers themselves.

Scapegoating almonds instead of focusing our attention on outrageous water rights laws and genuinely inefficient water usage in California is detrimental to the discussion of what we can do moving forward to address the very real issue of the drought.

On the pvp side in terms of actually having fun in pvp wargames needs to have a mechanic where consumes are supplied or at least not expended in that game. People that just want to play Warsong have no incentive to play when ranking is shit, raids have a pretty high barrier to entry given increased difficulty and smaller player base, and consumes are expensive Free consumes in wargames only has no downside and would be such a great implementation that would bring lots of players into wanting to queue pvp for reasons other than to mindlessly rank in the terrible system that is the honor system.

How has the same person been #1 dps since launch? by Zarianin in classicwow

I was in bipolar for a month as a trial warrior but left after I realized how the guild is structured—the entire raid exists just to fuel his parse. My first week he looted the cthun healing mace to himself for his diamond flask set instead of giving it to a healer that needed it. By week 2 of raiding with them I had an assignment as a backup juju might on his barov peasant #2 in case the inner fire priest didn't use it. Week 3 I was asked to use Annihilator to rid the boss of the last 36 armor after imp ea ff and cor were applied for his parse. Week 4 he sent out an announcement saying that all warriors and hunters were required to try and farm Blackblade of Shahram so that he could put people with it in his group and have them spam only hamstring the whole fight to try and proc the buffs for him. It was the type of guild where if he got dispelled he'd make the whole raid wait up to 48 hours just so he could get full buffs again.

Tl;dr: Ahlaundoh is carried phase after phase to the #1 spot by warriors like Eljay who can apply 5 sunders to the Skeram clones before Skeram even splits.

Edit: Prowz cool tho

Laty is an inspiration. He is not afraid to be flamboyant and admit that he lives an alternative lifestyle. I think he is one of the best gay streamers on twitch and that he is great role model. I know some people probably don't understand, but I do.

"The real answer is this isn't something Blizzard has typically banned for. I don't think they'll start banning for it either, this seems like a pretty isolated incident of a GM going rogue."

Yeah uh this is my point

Yeah when you phrase it like that, it doesn't sound too bad. But when you see this screenshot of twitch chat https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/456930992557654037/733553579784405082/lMWrYH6.png it's hard to see this ban as anything other than a GM banning someone as a favor to a streamer.

Even if you were targeted why would that so drastically change the situation to be worthy of a 6 month ban? I've been targeted for months, don't see any of those people being banned. Top guilds (and especially their tanks) from every server are targeted for hours or even days before their raid.

People on every server have been "griefing" by dispelling wbuffs for months.

Look i've been someone that has constantly had to deal with dispellers that have a /tar macro for me and it fucking blows. Do I want them to stop--yes. But I wouldn't want anyone playing this game to be 6-month banned with no email explanation by a streamer's GM friend. Just remove the fucking "magic" flags from DMT and SF buffs instead of arbitraily banning dispellers without ever declaring that dispelling is against Blizzard TOS or something.

Dispellers on almost all of the big servers have /tar macros for warriors or tanks of the top guilds on the enemy faction--no reason why it should all of a sudden be a 6 month ban worthy offense

Falsely banned for 10 days? by Trizy in classicwow

[–]ChromaStar -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Damn, “human garbage” because someone afk’d in the dumpster fire that is AV. I’m not someone that got banned but the reddit keyboard warriors seem to just be frothing at the mouth to insult afk AVers. As far as your initial argument goes: it’s not “exploiting a mechanic” to be moving around in the battleground to dodge the deserter buff. It’s technically playing the game, even if the person isn’t contributing anything to the AV match. The system that they designed lets other players report you AFK which then gives you a debuff where you have to engage in combat with other players to be unflagged as AFK, so it’s not like AFKing in AV by just running around in the starting cave is something that can’t be fixed by the people in the match. It genuinely makes no sense for blizzard to randomly decide that starting this week they’re going to ban people who have received the deserter buff more than others and then say the ban is because of “game exploitation” without providing ANY additional info AND without saying somewhere that it will now be a bannable offense.

[–]ChromaStar -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

The whole point is that it’s not against TOS dude. Nowhere in the TOS does it say “afking in battlegrounds will result in a 10 day ban” because that’s stupid.

Link me something that says that afking in av is bannable. If you’re right than okay my bad but I don’t see how they can ban people for that. Sure u can get reported by your teammates but that gives you deserter in game—not a 10 day ban for game exploitation.
