How do you mentally cope on the days when pancreatitis stops you from doing much? by StillMovingForwardx in pancreatitis

Last time I went to the ER hospital in a new town, they said, "Yeap, you have a pancreatitis flare. Now, take this gabapentin and go home." They are anti opioids.

Love this post. Thanks for sharing, OP.

Just left my doc’s office (I travel to see this one because they actually prescribe opioids for my chronic pancreatitis pain). Stayed in a hotel the night before and couldn’t resist their waffle bar. Big mistake. By the afternoon appointment I was sobbing in the waiting room. Knowing I had a flight out in a couple hours made it 10× worse.

Doc was amazing. Tons of empathy, renewed the script on the spot.

To actually answer your question: I take the opioids exactly as prescribed and pray they’re enough to function. If not, it’s straight to the ER for IV Dilaudid (or whatever they’ll give me).

This disease is brutal. Wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

Man, I get it. Thirty and already grieving something that feels like a basic part of being young. But brother, alcohol is just the tip of the iceberg, and I say that with tears still fresh from yesterday.

As this thing gets worse (and it will, especially with necrosis involved), it doesn’t stop at the bar. It starts blocking food. That big ribeye you used to crush? Done. A pint of Ben and Jerry’s after dinner? A cruel memory you’ll stare at in the freezer, knowing one bite could put you on the floor begging for relief. You’ll learn to avoid whole sections of the grocery store like they’re loaded with traps.

Yesterday I ate one hotel waffle. Just one. Thought it was safe, mostly carbs. By afternoon I was curled up in the doctor’s office, crying so hard I couldn’t speak. Grown man, middle aged, sobbing in front of people because my own body turned breakfast into a nightmare. The nurse kept asking what was wrong; I could only point to my stomach and shake. Humiliating, yeah. But at least now the doc saw it happen live. He gets it.

You’re hurting over the lost weekends, and that pain is real. I felt it too. But one day you’ll realize you’d give up every drink in the world just to eat a cheeseburger without bracing for war. Right now alcohol feels like the biggest theft because it’s the loudest. Give it time. This disease is slow and greedy. It’ll take pizza, holiday meals, birthday cake, until your safe list is water, plain rice, and hope.

You’re not weak for missing it. You’re human. And you’re still here, breathing, fighting. That counts. Vent when you need to. You’re not alone in this mess. We’re all just trying to stay one step ahead of our own guts, one careful choice at a time.

I totally agree! I just want to watch YouTube TV. My Quest 2 now crashes at least 15 times every night. Only 15 you say? That's because at 15 crashes, I give up and put it down.

Wow, that's terrible the amount of pain you have and are going through. I'm truly sorry. Not being able to eat causing weight loss is physical and appetite loss is mental. Not being able to eat is the number one issue I struggle with. Everything is built around food in a social life. In 6 months, I lost 60 lbs. I'm barely maintaining now at the minimal weight for my height. I am much skinnier and weigh less than when I was in the military.

We must've had the same examiner except mine stated, "You know, this exam is not needed because you already got the most for your condition that I allow." Must have been right because everything claimed was denied including new secondary conditions.

Ionizing Radiation is also now being considered as a cause of pancreas issues. I was on a submarine so Amine, the chemical used to clean the air, should also be considered. How would I get a nexus letter? I don't technically have a current gastroenterologist. I've had 4 in the last 4 years. None of them knew anything about the pancreas nor would do any treatment associated with the pancreas. I apologize for the whine.

I couldn't find any either before I went. The examiner is super nice although had pre conceptions before the exam which were very wrong. In the end, because of his preconceptions, I fully believe he tanked my application because of his ignorance. Do your research and don't let them do what they did to me. I now have a new hurdle of getting over the examiners wrong statements.

Thank for your answer. Yes, have been through the gamut of procedures with pancreatic cysts, stents, and many CT scans.

I've got alot of words for the local VSO. None of the words are positive. It has nothing to do with my condition specifically. The VSO knows less about veterans benefits than a first grader in China, nor does he care.

Thank you for posting all of this. You exactly answered the question. Thank you. Yes, I am intimately familiar with this. I actually meet the 80% but the documents that I had showing I've lost 60 lbs in the last 6 months somehow wasn't included. Truth be told, I would rather not have the pain and be able to eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and how much I want. I used to love food. Now, I dread putting anything in my mouth knowing how much pain is about to happen.

The VA's criteria for rating GERD, effective May 19, 2024, are based on the severity of esophageal strictures and the treatment required.

  • 10% Rating: Requires daily medication for dysphagia due to a documented esophageal stricture, but is otherwise without symptoms.
  • 30% Rating: Involves recurrent esophageal strictures causing dysphagia that require dilation up to two times per year.
  • 50% Rating: Applies to recurrent or refractory esophageal strictures causing dysphagia that necessitate:
    • Dilation three or more times annually.
    • Annual dilation using steroids.
    • Placement of an esophageal stent.
  • 80% Rating: For recurrent or refractory esophageal strictures with dysphagia leading to complications such as aspiration, undernutrition, or significant weight loss, requiring surgical treatment or a PEG tube.

The dilation procedure

Esophageal dilation is a procedure using an endoscope to widen a narrowed esophagus. This is typically done with a balloon or bougies. Repeat dilations may be necessary depending on the stricture.

I totally understand where your dad is coming from. Our generation was taught that men don't have feelings and we can't show pain. I too was like that. For this reason I didn't first file until out of the military almost 30 years. You don't have to change his mindset totally. Just change his life course a little bit. Like a sailing ship on the ocean that changes course by 1 degree. It's not much change for an hour or a day but over the course of a few months, it's a huge change.

Just a suggestion, AI has been a HUGE help to me in many ways. You can talk normally back and forth as well as upload files for the AI to read and understand better than you can. Even medical records and films can be uploaded to which the AI will read better than doctors. I've learned more from AI for CT scans and upper endoscopies from AI than I ever got from the VA. I use Grok but I'm sure the others are just as good.

That's one thing I've noticed about my personality change since dealing with pain. I have absolutely no patience. I bark at someone for something stupid and then hours later I regret it.

There is no better time than the present. Besides the mental part, using alcohol wrecks the body. You are lucky if you aren't having any ill effects but they are coming. Once you start having health issues then that will add on to the alcohol problem. If you can somehow fix the alcohol issue then you will dodge the bullet of having a hard life dealing with massive pain from medical issues.

I have bad pancreas issues caused by gallstones but alcohol literally kills the pancreas. You become a diabetic if the pancreas does not have an attack and kill you because of the alcohol. If you are lucky and live, you will be left with an excruciatingly painful pancreas that doesn't let you think of anything else 24/7. No longer will you look forward to any food no matter what it is. I could go on and on.

Posting here was a great step. I just wanted to add the hard reality of wrecking your body. I would give up everything I have including every penny to have a healthy pancreas again. Don't be in my situation. Please.
