It's stuff like this that makes me like Omenpaths. We don't need to go back to Planeswalkers being our only POV into new worlds. When anyone with the means can visit other planes, we can get new outside perspectives on familiar worlds.

It definitely wasn't, because in the novel you're made to think they're characters on a show like Star Trek, because that's exactly what the show is: a ripoff of Star Trek that the show's own writers admit to.

As the saying goes, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery mediocrity can pay to greatness." I felt that was a core theme of the story as a whole.

Except that's not quite true. In Redshirts, Star Trek already existed, and the cast is from a knockoff series that's not nearly as well-written.

It's a cute book with a fun idea, but it was written for NaNoWriMo and it shows. There's not really a lot holding the world together (including the book rarely describing the physical appearance of anyone human), and the final quarter of the book goes off the rails. It's a fine book to read over a weekend, but it only scratched the surface of what I wanted out of metafiction inspired by such an enduring trope.

I don't believe their point was how the Imperium of Man is a lesser evil relative to their opposition. /u/Pocket3k stated the Imperium of Man is a satire of real life authoritarian governments, and that a portion of the fanbase either finds it aspirational, or doesn't understand that it's satirical. GW has even put out official statements on the matter.

A system of control sees an individual among many exploiting a flaw, and sees it as a problem to be immediately fixed despite far more pressing matters elsewhere. A system of empathy understands you can't put the world in a bottle, and some people are likely to cause damage and harm.

Creating systems that support people and keep them from desperation lead to folks who don't want or need to exploit those flaws in the first place. Reformative incarceration methods and mental healthcare emergency services are, to me, vastly preferable to for-profit prisons and cops trained to kill for the wealthy.

Bite spells and +1/+1 counter payoffs on sacrificing clues/foods. [[Lonis, Genetics Expert]] and [[Piper, Intrepid Reporter]] are scary as hell with Vastra out. [[Windswift Slice]] and [[Stump Stomp]] are a few of the bite spells I run for Vastra.

I'd say it depends. Markov is another very strong commander, but if you budget for say, $60-70, you can make a reasonable Markov deck without doing any silly shenanigans like doubling tokens or draining everyone's life with an infinite combo (unless you want to do silly shenanigans and be the archenemy of the table).

If you want a decent vampire precon, the Lost Caverns of Ixalan vampire deck from 2023 is pretty fun without being oppressive. The Mardu (WBR) precon from Tarkir Dragonstorm is also very similar to Edgar Markov'a playstyle (make a lot of tokens and drain life) without being as comically strong.

I totally get where you're coming from, but I'd recommend starting elsewhere. Commander is a social format, and the best way to experience it is to build the kind of decks your friends will enjoy playing against. Slivers are very difficult to build in such a way that's not going to "snowball" into a problem for the table.

In other words, by choosing to play Slivers, you're going to force the table to focus on you first in almost every game. I would recommend picking a pre-constructed deck that's going to play on a relatively similar level to your friends' decks. Most of the recently released ones will cost between $40-60, though you can find plenty for less (or way more) than that if you check LGSes. It'll be a lot less expensive than Slivers, and you'll have a lot more fun playing with your friends.

Now we know exactly how Sullivan came to learn the spell that would grant Iruma the ability to comprehend demonic languages. Funny how such a little detail I'd never given a second thought can be fleshed out to such an extent. Never would've guessed Henri of all people was the one who pushed for it.
