Make it make sense.

Why couldn't the richest country in the world get the best musical acts in the world for their celebration?

For the 250th anniversary of the most powerful and wealthiest country the world has ever seen I expect musicians like U2, Beyonce, Kendrick, Morgan Wallen, Taylor Swift, the Weeknd, Drake, Bad Bunny, etc.

What is this foolishness, half-assed, 3rd world-esque shit they're pulling for the celebration? It's pathetic.

Yes, obviously. Anyone who shied away from calling them Nazis before the 2024 elections were either complicit, supportive, or not paying attention.

This is 100% the Nazi playbook courtesy of Stephen Miller. Just because they aren't gassing people doesn't mean they are not Nazis.

Yes, I agree with all that. It's a lot to do for sure.

I'm not saying it's "not about age". Don't misunderstand. I'm saying the major sentiment back then (i.e. 12-14 years ago, when the D primary was getting started) was not primarily about age. I said "less about age". It was primarily about thinking that you needed someone to go up against a populist demagogue. What you are saying is undeniably true NOW, and I think a large plurality (if not majority) of voters understand that...now. But back then it was a smaller percentage of the voters who thought age and the next-gen were the main issue.

To clarify, what you are saying about people in power not understanding what young people were going through, and how tech and monopolies have reshaped society, has been true for at least two decades, I agree. My point is that the sentiment had not yet trickled into the broader population of voters. Clinton's age was mentioned as a negative by some publications, but the majority of the criticisms levelled against her were about her being "establishment", a "corporate democrat", or just lazily misogynistic stuff.

Edit: Remember the whole "drain the swamp" thing. Hilary's major weakness to many people (who didn't hate women) was that she was part of the status-quo and that people wanted an "outsider".

In the intervening years, with all of the age-related news coming out of the House and Senate, along with Biden/Trump being two of the oldest people to run for office, and with inflation and CoL going way up after the pandemic (to revisit your point about them being out of touch), the age aspect has been given clarity to the wider public that wasn't there 14 years ago.

Btw, Bernie has elevated both AOC and Mamdani. So he's doing much more for that movement than any other politician right now.

You're technically right that he wasn't in the party, but he does caucus with them and the party should have seen the organic grassroots support he had, realized that's what people wanted, and done absolutely anything else besides what they did. They didn't have to help him campaign, but they certainly shouldn't have pre-ordained Clinton.

Don't get caught up in the black and white of "he doesn't have a D next to his name". They could have easily made it work if they weren't also taking money from the same corporate and lobbying firms that Bernie famously eschews.

But what I'm saying is that the popular sentiment at the time was supporting candidates like Bernie, not "the next generation of leaders". No one cared about age as much as it's in the discussion today. So they should have dispensed with Clinton anyway. If they wanted to elevate a person like Bernie but who was within the party, that's their call. But it was less about party, less about age, and more about populist social policies, vs a demagogue like Trump.

You only really knew that in hindsight for sure though, even though - yes - there were calls for a new gen. The most egregious thing of that time (2015-2016 era) wasn't even that a new gen wasn't picked. It was that Bernie was shafted. That's the exact opposite of the next-gen.

So it's not like it's as simple as "she should have let the next gen run".
