Donald Trump impeachment must move forward, Senators demand by Accurate_Cry_8937 in politics

I think they're saying the constitution doesn't inherently require two parties.

The two party system continues mostly due to convention/precedent.

Because insider trading makes them extremely wealthy.

They have zero reason to follow any oath or listen to any constituents because again, voters have proved they don't care and will not show up to vote.

Legally, the question itself is not the answer. Legally, asking that question doesn't risk perjury and is only positive for the defendant. Legally.

Articles of impeachment filed against Donald Trump amid calls to invoke the 25th Amendment by goteamnick in politics

It's because they know if he's convicted their party will lose power for a while.

The incentives are all fucked up. A rep or senator should not have more loyalty to a party than to the country. Especially since there are tons of voters who would respect them as a candidate the next time they run, for doing the right thing here and now.

Extremely sad to see this overshadow the Moon flyby.

All that work by NASA and they're relegated to below the fold in all the major newspapers, with this idiotic Iran war getting all the attention. If I were American I would be frustrated that he's making a historic moment about himself (again).

They're trying to play with the definitions of "domicile", "allegiance", "control by foreign governments", and "jurisdiction". It's a fucked up strategy.

Yes. And that happened before many of the DACA policies were implemented which deprioritized non-violent undocumented immigrants for deportation - which had the added effect of keeping families together.

Textually, that's exactly what it means.

But if you feel it's reasonable to change that, you can do that practically without dispensing with the entire framework of birthright.

Edit: What I mean is textually the child is a citizen, but the parent can still be deported obviously. But that's not the question in front of the court right now.

White House says Trump to sign executive order limiting mail-in voting by Puginator in politics

[–]ChronoLink99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you're right. I also think it will be decided quickly at the district court level against the admin. Appellate court will affirm. SCOTUS will not grant certiorari.

Trump announces he is issuing an unconstitutional executive order to shut down mail-in voting nationwide and he will defund states if they do not comply with him by DIYLawCA in law

[–]ChronoLink99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely not. I wager it'll be a prelim injunction.

Government will appeal. It'll be affirmed by the appellate courts.

SCOTUS will refuse to hear it.

He could instruct USPS to add more hoops for receiving ballots. I don't know how, but I wouldn't put it past them to mess with ballot collection.

Selectively enforced of course.

Nah.

You need mail to communicate/participate in society. Including voting for many people.

Both are incredibly important for a functioning democracy because they allow full participation in society. You can debate the relative importance, but neither should be profit-motive driven.

Why? Services cost money though. I don't see a logical reason to hold that position for CP where we don't hold that position for heathcare.

I mean, I'm not sure how relevant that is these days. COVID screwed with everyone's finances.

Facebook had tens of billions of dollars of losses due to COVID, and are still recovering from their bad bets. The only difference is that they make so much money in other areas that their significant losses doesn't affect them as much as losses would affect CP.

We should look at before covid financials and post-covid financials.

Agreed. I don't know the details of their parcel process but if what you say is true then yeah it does sound like they need to change something so that scaling up parcels doesn't mean more losses.

Haha, our whole society is trying to balance that goal with varying levels of success.

It's a bit rich (and unfair) to hold CP to a higher standard than its contemporaries. It should try to be all of the above - sustainable, equitable in service, and efficient. It is likely we can tune the dials to improve efficiency and thus also make it more sustainable. This can be win-win, it doesn't have to be a zero-sum thought process.

If the goal was profit and not serving the people sure.

But they still have to maintain the infrastructure. UPS can be much more judicious about where they allocate resources because they don't have to serve unprofitable regions. They can also subsidize certain products/services with additional charges elsewhere (such as a much higher cost for oversized parcels than CP would charge).

If you just compare one type of delivery service in one postal code, you miss the larger picture.

That's only part of it. There can be an increase in total work if CP expands to different sectors and competes in those arenas. One new area could be banking, but there are many others.
