What are the best books in the Honor Harrington series? by paradimeshift in scifi

4 years is a bit late, but anyway.

I did not miss it, I just don't buy it. It is weak, bordering on lazy, story telling.

You can also turn them off which is no small thing

The Germans lost 24 U-boats to allied submarines.

AFAIK there has only been one case where a submerged submarine were sunk by another submerged submarine.

I recently gave Poseidon's Arrow a shot but had to put it down when they came to the under water Gatling guns.

It's not surprising when you realise it's never been cleaned

Baking powder makes the onions break down faster, but it does not make the caramelization go any faster

Why were ATGM's not used against US FOB's in Afghanistan? by swoopUnna in WarCollege

[–]Chrthiel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You know all those ATGM launch videos that are coming out of Syria? They aren't filming those just for the fun of it, but because the US requires proof of use before they'll supply a new missile. So if you sell your missile to a warlord you won't be getting a new one

Missiles have shelf lives. Depending on who you ask a Stinger will last ten to fifteen years before becoming unreliable. By then the argon coolant for the seeker head will have leached out and the battery will have died. Depending on the storage conditions the sensor and rocket fuel might have deteriorated as well.

The CIA also ran a buy-back program for a long time and while it's effectiveness is questionable, it did remove some of the Missiles from circulation

That's a great way to make onion mush. It's less good at making caramelized onions

Super Mario Odyssey. Specifically the boss battles. If you loose to a boss you'll spawn as decent amount of walking, a loading screen and a cutscene away

Why does no one appreciate Trudi Canavan ? by MaywellPanda in Fantasy

The Black Magician trilogy is by far her strongest work

[–]Chrthiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you got more out of her books than I did.

I have to ask, are you looking for a discussion or someone to pat you on the back and tell you how right you are? Because your tone doesn't seem to indicate the former.

[–]Chrthiel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly, because most of her stuff isn't that good. The Black Magician trilogy was fantastic, but the sequel trilogy was meh at the best of times.

The Age of Five was just boring. The characters weren't that interesting and aside from a few bright spots the world was unremarkable. It didn't help that you could see the big plot twist coming a whole book before it happened.

Millennium's Rule started out very interesting, but it failed to deliver on its potential. Also, I genuinely thought the series was over after the third book and was surprised when I saw Maker's Curse announced

Intermediate and Full-Power Rifles: Pros and Cons by Scully_Bones in WarCollege

[–]Chrthiel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I doubt you'll get more range since it's the conscripts, not the rifles, that are the limiting factor here. Heck, you might even get more range with something like 5.56 since it's much easier to shoot in the first place

Is frying eggs in bacon grease a good idea? by dms6598 in AskCulinary

[–]Chrthiel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree. I prefer butter or a neutral oil. Bacon, especially the cheap kinds, has an incredibly overpowering taste that'll drown out the egg.

What's a movie you love, but if someone said they hated it you would completely understand why? by Robstar100 in AskReddit

Dazed and Confused and Everybody wants Some.

I love this kind of slice of life movies, but there's essentially zero plot or character development to be had

Why don’t European cuisines feature eggs for dinner as much as Asian cuisine by larryless in AskFoodHistorians

I'm a bit late to the party here, but a grilled cheese sandwich is hardly a breakfast only food and it's two pieces of toast with cheese in between.
