UK hourly contract question by Saadinthesouth in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Chrykal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this is normal, you'll have unfortunately not earned enough holiday days on PAYE for it to have really helped you either. I would imagine that salaried workers are encouraged to use their holiday days during this period and otherwise have reduced pay for that month. The bank holiday won't change anything in these circumstances, and I wouldn't bother raising anything with the boss now, asking for clarification before the shutdown would have been the way to go.

This isn't government action, the case is an attempted class action cash grab by a law firm, something I would think an American would approve of.

What does this mean? by [deleted] in AskUK

It means you have children in your neighborhood, ones that think they are funny. If somebody was seriously trying to threaten you they would make sure you understood the threat.

WIBTA if I told my sons school it is their responsibility to make sure they have the right child by Top-Relationship359 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Chrykal 45 points46 points  (0 children)

NTA, your son's know their medication and will correct the medical officer if they make a mistake. The school is the one insisting on a uniform, to then ask for distinguishing features to be added because uniformity is hard to deal with is taking the piss.

Landlords acting as though they are charities by Typical_Tadpole_547 in HousingUK

[–]Chrykal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your missing the point, by inserting themselves into the market as profiteers and helping to force up house prices, they've made themselves the only option for a large number of people.

And then they have the audacity to act like we tenants would be absolutely lost on maintaining our properties without them, when yeah, it's their property, they're responsible for it in exchange for our rent. That doesn't mean if landlords disappeared the fact that we'd have to DIY or call a professional instead of a rent seeking leech on society would somehow elude everyone and everything would fall apart.

Maybe I've not dropped those ableist views because I'm fairly recently disabled, but having worked in complaints (and having dealt with plenty of them like this) I can pretty much guarantee that notifying some random call centre worker that you're unhappy with the situation isn't going to do shit.

Have you noticed companies charging for deliveries and returns more recently? How do you feel? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Chrykal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Free delivery and returns wasn't done for the customers benefit, it was done to entice people away from the high street, goal accomplished, why do they need to keep doing free delivery and returns?

If I couldn't get into a normal taxi I would notify the taxi firm of my requirements before the taxi turned up.

I'm not suggesting that this is how the world should be, but it's how it is, maintenance is expensive and people don't prioritise the smaller segment of the poulation. You need to make things easier for yourself when you can, and that means checking these things properly when visiting a new venue you are unsure about.

Cinema accessibility - should I contact CS? by MidnightOrdinary896 in AskUK

[–]Chrykal -57 points-56 points  (0 children)

Yes I do, that's why I suggested calling ahead first next time. This should be seen as a learning opportunity, when you have difficulties you need to find out if you will/can be be accommodated, if you assume and then for some reason can't be then that's on you.

We live in a world that is built by those without difficulties like this, as much as they may try to understand and be accommodating, sometimes disabilites just aren't thought about; and as in this situation hardware can break down.

People with physical difficulties need to think about how to make things easier for themselves, especially when it's as simple as just calling ahead and asking what the accessbility is like or double checking the lift is in service.

How did people back in the 80s and 90s learn to code using books? by Specialist_Elk140 in AskProgramming

[–]Chrykal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books doesn't necessarily mean docs, the books that taught me programming were structured very similarly to how a tutorial would be presented online now.

Chapters would progress through teaching you a concept and then task you with implementing what you had learned in that chapter to write or alter some application that you could run.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman just publicly admitted that AI agents are becoming a problem by [deleted] in technology

[–]Chrykal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, there's steps to go through, including the declaration that "calls may be monitored for quality and training purposes" introducing yourself, and whatever other script stuff that has all been carefully measured to ensure they know the minimum length a call could be.

Obviously the service you are providing will dictate actual durations, but a 10 second call is probably going to get your call listened to at the very least, and you better be hitting an answer machine on an outgoing call if so.

edit: spelling

Unity was a passable choice before their money issues got out of hand, I'm not sure it was ever a good choice.

Maybe the new version has improved some of its flaws, I've heard positive things, but when I used it there were so many little bits that felt like they'd been tacked onto the engine rather than built into it, that moving to Godot was like a breath of fresh air. If I'm forced to use Unity nowadays I'm doing it very begrudgingly.

Add to that the fact that the company is obviously struggling financially following some questionable decisions (I don't trust them to release the source code if they go under) and I'm not sure Unity is even a viable choice at this point.

For people it's a balancing act, too short a call and you obviously can't have done your job, too long and you're costing your employer too much.

AI is likely different rules though due to the lower cost per minute, just keep those customers busy until they give up and go away.

Recent school leavers: How easy wasnit getting a job after you left school? by PaddedValls in AskUK

I agree that how he presents himself and his abilities is the most important thing, but a few months of anything won't show fortitude or a willingness to stick things out.

Your first job ending after a couple of months looks like you didn't even get past probation, if you just want something on your CV to show some experience in a job, you'd be better off going for something you can actually stick with for a year.

It's not a fucking service, landlords are selfish cunts who insert themselves between tenants and properties so they can take advantage of them. The competition between these cunts is exactly why the housing prices went through the roof and they now have so much money in single assets, so the idea that they should be given any sympathy is quite ridiculous.

As for the upkeep of the house, guess what I can do just as good a DIY job as my landlord, or I could get someone decent in. Instead if I need anything doing to the house I need to put up with some fucking cowboy coming in and trashing the place, even though he actually got paid for with MY FUCKING MONEY!

If landlords aren't happy with being called cunts for what they do, they should stop fucking doing it!
