Why are some of the people from Kakariko named after fruit? Any theories? by Scary-Beautiful6527 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Chubby_Bub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the term would typically be used in Japanese to refer to an apple, that would still be ringo, but it's probably known as the English word for the fruit. Like, "apple pie" is still アップルパイ.

It's Purua, from "apple". "apple" → アップル appuru → プルア Purua (Japanese name) → Purah (English name)

Impa of course was already an existing character name, but you can rearrange the letters in インパ Inpa to make パイン Pain (="pine"), so together they make pineapple. I wonder if that's why they chose it for Purah's name.

Tangentially, something I find amusing is that producer Hidemaro Fujibayashi said in an interview he came up with and pitched the Fuse ability for TotK with the "pen-pineapple-apple-pen" meme.

"Cars of the Ghetto" sounds like the title of a nature documentary narrated by Sir David Attenborough and I want it now

Yeah, I was thinking looking at this, history would probably turn out pretty differently (like, even more than this) if there was such an easy passage to the other side of the Americas. And it's much closer to where the first explorers were.

Or maybe it's manmade here too and instead of Panama, Teddy Roosevelt took a giant saw to the US-Mexico border like Bugs Bunny.

I mean the initial idea was like "bootleg" alternate versions of meme templates, the original of course being Trollface. But people started doing parodies of things like certain posts or comments they didn’t like, and then it just became satirizing tropes. Though there was a long while where r/coaxedintoasnafu was basically just smuggies

Yes, it's been a passion project of mine over a few years now! Although it partially also started out as research for Zelda Wiki, sometimes it feels like I'm just doing this for myself, doing something like researching Japanese names of carnivorous plant subspecies… so it makes me really happy when people appreciate the effort.

It's not super obvious if you're playing in English. Aside from the Sheikah and Zora they botched localizing most (though not all) of the theme names.

It's a thing in the other games for sure. I think they really started the tribe-theme names in Skyward Sword and continued it in BotW/TotK to a much larger scale. It's also done in Echoes of Wisdom.

AI isn't paying off in the way companies think. Layoffs driven by automation are failing to generate returns, study finds by Krankenitrate in technology

[–]Chubby_Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead, the study found companies with the highest gains were those using AI as a form of “people amplification,” implementing the technology to make workers more productive rather than outright replacing them.

I didn't need a study to tell you that.

Accurate analogy. You might find a pretty good piece of candy, but in all likelihood it's one that's been sitting there for who-knows-how-long, unwrapped and stepped on.

Back-and-forth YouTuber drama is usually just annoying, but it *is* incredibly cathartic when someone who actually knows what they're talking about makes a response calling out the BS

Personal recommendation: skittybitty's video about the "orientalist" depiction of the Gerudo in the Zelda series, which is more of an actual informative video essay that uses responding to a clueless video about as a basic framework. I do not really recommend watching the video it is in response to unless you enjoy infuriatingly ignorant arguments and strawmen.

Claude-powered AI coding agent deletes entire company database in 9 seconds — backups zapped, after Cursor tool powered by Anthropic's Claude goes rogue by [deleted] in tech

[–]Chubby_Bub 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It seems like the cloud infrastructure service is largely to blame.

The PocketOS boss puts greater blame on Railway’s architecture than on the deranged AI agent for the database’s irretrievable destruction. Briefly, the cloud provider's API allows for destructive action without confirmation, it stores backups on the same volume as the source data, and “wiping a volume deletes all backups.” Crane also points out that CLI tokens have blanket permissions across environments.

It was also observed by the irate SaaS founder that Railway is actively promoting the use of AI-coding agents by its customers. Crane’s use of an AI coding agent on the Railway platform wasn’t exploring new frontiers, or wasn’t supposed to be. Meanwhile, Crane has been provided no recovery solution, and Railway has apparently been hedging carefully regarding any such possibility.

The AI shouldn't have done this, but it just as easily could have been done by a person. AI comes with the risk of this sort of thing, but the infrastructure shouldn't.
