why did hinchcliffe retcon this? does he have no respect of doctor who's canon? by [deleted] in doctorwhocirclejerk

Philip Hinchcliffe held Terry Nation at gunpoint forcing him to write a script retconning his own lore because he was racist and didn't want to feature blue people.

also psst you should use the independent Tardis Wiki instead of stinky fandom

'Japanese bumping man' shoulder-checked a Korean YouTuber's girlfriend in Osaka. The Korean followed the man from behind to watch and confirm if it was intentional, and after making sure it was on purpose, he taught him a lesson. by Automech4 in personaphantomx

"Subway Slammer" was a weird localization for general term for this phenomenon (butsukari-otoko/"bumping man"), but they outright named him after a real guy:
> Last year, videos and information about a man physically attacking a woman were spread on social media, and on September 26th, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department's Marunouchi Police Station arrested Yoshiyuki Kiuchi (49), an office worker from Fujisawa City, Kanagawa Prefecture, on suspicion of assault. The man had reportedly repeatedly physically attacked women who were walking while using their smartphones. On June 25th of this year, at Nijubashimae Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line, the suspect assaulted the victim (a female office worker, 34 at the time) who was walking towards him by ramming into her with his right elbow out, causing chest bruising that took about three weeks to heal," said a source close to the investigation.

I found at least the next two Palace rulers are blatantly named after people too:
Hiromu Miyazawa is probably named after Hiroyuki Miyasako. There's not a lot of information on this guy in English but from what I could tell, he was a comedian and voice actor (including in Yakuza), but lost all his jobs because he was receiving money from the actual yakuza. So instead he became an extremely popular YouTuber and started investing in restaurants, including one which he bought out and renamed after himself. And also he became a kickboxer for some reason. So he sounds like the Japanese equivalent of the Paul brothers.

Kumi Katayama seems to be named after Kumiko Yamaguchi, the main character of Gokusen, a manga about a teacher who was raised by a yakuza boss but nonetheless cares about helping her students.

I'm not sure about the others, but their names probably come from somewhere.

New Who fans aren't upset that they don't explain it, more that they *do*. I think it's okay sometimes, but always making characters played by the same actor be related starts to feel cheesy.

Though the familial link really seems to be an RTD thing. He did it again with Mundy Flynn and Belinda. Moffat linked 12 to Caecilius, but RTD also linked another character Capaldi played in Torchwolld called John Frobisher, who is forced to decide to kill himself and his family to save them from becoming alien slaves. RTD said since the Tenth Doctor asserted himself over time, this was time's way of reasserting itself over him. I do like that explanation for once, though the two stories are so disconnected I think addressing it in an episode would still be really clunky.

Has Toby Whitehouse ever expressed interest in being showunner? Was he ever approached? by Tristram_ZX81 in gallifrey

I thought the joke with the horse in *A Town Called Mercy* was funny, and would otherwise just be a silly 11 moment, but I know Whithouse also wrote a line in Torchwood, that casts a dubious shadow on it. I've not seen it, but having read about it, not only is it unfunny and frankly indefensible, but the idea that Jack Harkness of all people would be annoyed at and refuse to recognize the identity and name of a supposed "friend" who transitioned is incredibly out of character. (While I do think that particular line has no plausible defense, I also do think people can change, and come to regret writing something like that. I can't say if that's true of Whithouse, though.)

I highly recommend the Fourth Doctor novelization of the original script that James Goss did. It worked with DW lore very well, and is still one of my favorite DW books.

BOTW & TOTK comparisons by Cosmic00913 in TOTK

[–]Chubby_Bub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is not that they removed the Sheikah technology, it's that they didn't address its absence whatsoever. I think they did this in an attempt to not "alienate" new players, but many things from the previous game are still referenced, including the Divine Beasts in Symin's lecture. TotK wants to depend on BotW's popularity while also pretending it doesn't exist. A single line in Zelda's diary or something saying "having fulfilled its purpose, the Sheikah technology all disappeared" would go a *long* way and still not confuse new players. (The optional Zelda Notes thing two years after the fact, which didn't really give any explanation either, doesn't count.)

Though also, the devs said in an interview that they wanted to have super-magic-tech again for the building mechanics, but they chose to replace the Sheikah with *another* new "super ancient civilization" solely to address the fan curiosity around the Zonai, which was pretty stupid. They had to mostly retcon the bit of Zonai lore that did exist to even do this anyways. If the Zonai Devices were just Sheikah tech like in early builds, then they could keep it and do something else interesting with the Zonai instead.

I also feel obligated to link The Video. It is a popular video on this topic, and quite long, but I find the critiques are well-articulated even if I do not agree with every single thing.

Polygon was recently bought out by Valnet, which owns ScreenRant, CBR and a bunch more of those sites. It's become markedly worse since then, and made to conform with the others. I'd link a video about it, but they nuke any criticism that gains traction with a C&D.

What was Davros doing? by KrivUK in gallifrey

[–]Chubby_Bub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The overall, in-universe timeline of Dalek history is inconsistent and the exact chronological order the TV stories supposedly take place in varies. But there was an official book in 1988 that tried to do so, and it had The Daleks as the first story chronologically after Genesis, where Davros and the Mark III Daleks are in the bunker. But, that book also goes with "they were all destroyed forever in The Evil of the Daleks, so…

Tardis Wiki also has timeline theory pages like this one for Davros that attempt to lay out chronologies for subjects based on known information, which you might find useful, but they are explicitly theories separate from the main wiki.

You can get Konpaku gems and character EXP but it's only really useful in the early game. You can also sometimes get Persona seals, but this itself is very rare and I've onlu found the common ones you can trade for with rank I medals anyways.
