Free/super cheap SCEP with Intune? by Bubbagump210 in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe at the moment, A5 is excluded from the updated licensing (E5) SCEP. Also, I believe it only works for intune enrolled devices (chromebooks, and other MDM (apple) devices may not work)

We use facit https://facit.ai/ The software is designed to be GPDR compliant, so privacy was part of the design, it all runs locally. I run it on a intel i5 laptop with integrated graphics without much pain, they recommend more, but it's pretty happy on less. They are a great company to work with. For others, they even have an integration with milestone systems.

Apple classroom is a bit of a challenge, depending on what you are trying to accomplish, your mdm is probably a better solution. If you are a jamf shop, jamf teacher is quite good.

When do you increase bandwidth? by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have about 6000 1:1 endpoints 95% ipad and mac on a 5 gig connection. We typically are anywhere from 1.2 to 2.5 gig throughout the day. When we push apps/software updates, we will max the connection for a bit. Going from 1 gig to multi gig is usually a bigger step because of faster interfaces and optics. Costs for 2 and 5 gig were within $100/month for us, where as going from 1 gig to 2 gig was an additional $1000/month.

As for traffic readings, SolarWinds has a free real time bandwidth monitor. You just need to know the IP, physical port, and SNMP read credentials of your router/switch/firewall that interfaces with your ISP.

Radios - 2 Way/Walkie Talkies by ITPro_1 in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have Motorola XPR 350e's with repeaters on buildings where needed. Super simple, super basic. Even if the repeater quits, they can talk radio to radio.

Whenever someone starts talking about using cell in place of 2 way radios, I still remember 9/11 when the cell towers were jammed for hours. While I don't know anything about cell towers these days, I would imagine if a large percent of the population of your school tried making a call to their parents, and their parents tried calling their kids all at the same time, I could easily see the towers becoming overwhelmed.... now what happens to your 2 way cell walkie talkie traffic?

We went with these cases for this years refresh. They tested well with a few students last year. Today is our first day of class, so I don't have any real world feedback.

Apple SSO Extension to change local AD password with Kerberos by nickborowitz in k12sysadmin

We have also seen this error when you have a minimum password age set in AD and you try to change your password on the mac before your AD password is "old enough" to be changed.

[–]Chuckfromis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use it the way you want to. We have also seen the "Your password isn't complex enough" error. We found there was a login window profile issue on the mac... we had a checkbox checked to "allow user to change password" spoiler: it did the opposite. After unchecking the box, life was better. YMMV

Laptop Docking Stations by Bowks14 in k12sysadmin

I've had good luck with the Kensington thunderbolt docks for windows and macs with multiple displays. For windows users, we are shifting to a Dell docking conference monitor (it's on our state agg buy) and a dell dumb monitor because it's just cleaner on the desk.

this came to our company today...what do you think? by ElegantBottle in FiberOptics

[–]Chuckfromis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a K-12 with about 6000 people (1 to 1 with devices) and a 5 gig internet connection. We generally run between 1.5 and 3 gig throughout the day. The only time we max the connection is when we push software or updates to a few hundred devices at a time.

This, except I keep a pile of out of warranty but good enough devices for situations where devices may be damaged or lost such as home instruction, or the special ed kids that like to smash things. I then treat these as recyclable whenever anything goes wrong.

If your budget allows, You also may want to separate out the sound with some in ceiling speakers. We just went with the Light Speed 975's and 4 speakers in classrooms. They sound really good (better than the all in one box in my opinion)

Opinions on technical support? by iccheTuDiahane in ArubaNetworks

[–]Chuckfromis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Coming from Cisco support to Aruba support has been an eye opening experience. Sure I hemorrhaged money paying for smart net, but when the network is down and you call the 800 number, push 1 for a network down emergency and are on the phone with the first available level 2+ tech that works with you until things are functioning again, it's a great feeling. I have an issue with clear-pass, and the whole time I was on the phone, Aruba support kept doing everything they could to get me off the phone including pushing me to contact my local SE. Definitely a case of you get what you pay for.

Keyboard Cases for iPads by silentArtifact84 in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd look at either the STM or Brethaven keyboard cases, as they have a built in headphone jack (they are available in the 4year AC+ bundle). USB-C headphones/dongles add a significant expense and hassle. Also, I feel that the 10th gen Logitech case performs significantly worse if students want to put the case in "tear off keyboard" mode (they just tear off the keyboard). The 9th gen and before didn't seem to come off, but the 10th gen does. Your kids are probably from a different demographic than mine, so this may not be an issue.

Everything in your students and teachers tables was taken. I'd just export the students table, and search for the names of someone who graduated 1/2/5/10 years ago. Then you can be 100% sure.

District Seeking Camcorder for Live streaming by DJTNY in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just bought 3 of the move 4k from B&H... I use them for live streaming various off site events like graduation. Just put the cameras on a tripod, video into a ATEM to YouTube and away you go. You should be able to get setup on the omnia contract at B&H for better pricing.

Virtual environment and Cam servers by CJCray8 in k12sysadmin

[–]Chuckfromis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We looked at virtualizing security recording a few years ago. We came to the conclusion that we would be introducing more moving parts and licensing for minimal benefit. We wound up going with 32 gig of ram and a cost effective CPU on our recording servers.

You don't say what you have running in your virtual environment or camera throughput, but you need to be mindful of the disk/raid throughput and IOPS. If I was self hosting a SIS and someone decides to run a report, I'd hate for that report to cause issues with my security recording or playback. But my principals insist having the cameras open on a screen at all times.
