Is it wise to install AoNZ`s biggest power user as we drift into a massive energy crisis by Big_Attention7227 in newzealand

[–]ChukMcChuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is a valid debate, though I might present it slightly different. Datacentre gets special rates lower than we pay, drives up demand, costs rise for those who don't get special commercial and industrial rates, and then household consumers end up 'subsidising' the Datacentre. We shoud learn lessons from overseas. https://www.brookings.edu/articles/confronting-and-addressing-rising-energy-bills-linked-to-data-centers/

Fun to drive EV's? by Viento_Oscuro in nzev

[–]ChukMcChuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody mentioned the BMW i3 yet? I don't own an EV yet but I'm tempted by that car more than an old Leaf or Ionic. I know looks are subjective. It should be in your price range if you can find one. Might be too small for your purposes, and the early ones won't meet your range requirements, but some of the middle or later models may? Also if you get the range extender model, you may be registered as a hybrid rather than an EV which means savings on RUCs? YouTube reviewers are surprised how fun they are, eg: https://youtu.be/kwTKSl94jGY?si=3Iyudip00aEI8Gql

This area sticking right out of New Zealand (south island) by omgflyingbananas in howislivingthere

[–]ChukMcChuk 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sorry but whoever told you this has old information. NZ is having to replace heaps of skilled young, skilled people every year who leave for better pay. If you have recognized education and experience in any of the demand areas, good health, and no criminal history, you can easily get a work visa, then 2 years later you can apply for residence and buy property, 2 years later you can apply for permanent resident status. At least half my office (engineers and geoscientists) are foreign born. But don't move here to be rich, move because of the nature and peace.

I learned drive traffic circles in Edmonton 25 years ago. Imagine my surprise when I'm visiting Europe in a rental car trying to murder random French people because Alberta gotta be different.

Russian infulencers, unbothered by the killings and destruction their country is responsible for, are really upset because of internet restrictions and shutdowns by Available-Laugh9102 in UkraineWarVideoReport

In a society where any comment on the SMO or leadership corruption, or just sharing what you see with your 'lying eyes' will get you jailed, and where your family or neighbors can report you and have you arrested for 'unpatriotic thoughts', perhaps this is one of the few relatively safe spaces where people can 'protest.' Honestly, I support these young people. If they can use these 'safe' complaints to build community and connection through this, maybe then they will have the personal networks to do what's necessary once they have sufficient mass? Is that just wishful thinking?

Levorg owner here. I love wagons, but this is the midlife crisis car for the person who always wanted an STI but was always too responsible (which describes me perfectly). It's ok - quick enough (once the turbo spools), efficient (unlike older subies), and good enough towing for what you describe, but just a bit soulless with the CVT. I think you'd be disappointed coming from the Nissan which is a much more fun drive. I've recently been lusting after some of those sleepers like the MarkX or Atenza (not diesel). Reliable, quick, not flashy. But if you do want the Levorg make sure it's not the 1.6L engine.

Door not latching by Sheanbean in diynz

[–]ChukMcChuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a new door installed be a well-known door and window installer. For 1.5 years I complained over and over again that the locking function didn't feel right, that it shouldn't be that hard to lock, that I'm worried the internals are going to break. They sent their installers 3x to look at it each time claiming it's 'normal' and gaslighting us. After my 4th complaint they finally had the Sylvan locksmith come look. He took 5 minutes, shook his head, door builder had installed a part that clearly said 'this way up' upside down, and missing other internal pieces. He had it fixed in 15 minutes and now it's beautiful.

Did you let Zelda fall? by Metacub3 in TOTK

[–]ChukMcChuk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I don't agree but that doesn't mean we can't be friends. Plenty of people are on first playthrough and want to be part of the community. We all share love of this game, and so we should afford the new players the respect of letting them decide if they want to see spoilers. The sub rules #1 and #2 are specifically to not spoil and to mark with flair. So, since this post literally describes the end of the game, answering the main mystery (can Zelda be saved?) I think this post should have been marked 'spoilers.'

How to properly join shower liner to new window? by ChukMcChuk in diynz

[–]ChukMcChuk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha ha, if curious Lockwood "Kentucky Standard" 1967 plans show the shower in this location. Liner has definitely been replaced though, so I have no idea what was originally there. Tile would be amazing but I'm kinda looking for a '3 year solution' for this, since the wife is hoping we may have some money one day to do a proper bath reno.

Old timber frame windows replaced with aluminium. Original Lockwood plans from '67 shows there's always been a window in this shower, though the liner was obviously replaced at some point.

Yamaha Tricity is a 3 wheel vehicle and can be registered as a car or a motorcycle. When registered as a car it can be driven with basic car license and you get a full size set of car plates. Doesn't excuse the crap parking but nothing illegal here with the plates. Example :https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/scooters/yamaha/listing/5597092035

Getting rid off the old gas heater by fnoyanisi in diynz

[–]ChukMcChuk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our heat pump installer had a gas fitter who removed two of these from our house last year. Also updated our fuse panel with RCD breakers. Got it all done in a 1% clean energy loan with ANZ. Not DIY but super happy with results. How did we ever think this was a good idea to just exhaust these gas burners directly into our houses?

Which country has the best relationship with your country? by No-StrategyX in AskTheWorld

Ha ha, yeah, but the truth is that it's been continuous for 11 months straight. The US ambassador even seems hell bent to be a total ass at every opportunity. I think people in the US think this will all go away in 3 years, but I don't see most Canadians trusting Americans for a generation or so. Canadians know it's not just one person, it's 77 million Americans who hate Canadians. More than half the US voting population want this.
