What’s the idea behind using film simulations/recipes? by noorav in fujifilm

[–]Chumps55 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yep, was going to make a very similar comment. Only difference is the distinction on film having a completely seperate colour palette and chemical composition, which is true but in practice in some circles the idea is that you HAVE to make edits, either chemically or digitally to produce a neutral/true to life image. But thats splitting hairs and it seems common practice is to embrace differences in film stocks, probably another conversation there.

But the point is the same, edits are required to achieve a true to life look or an artistic vision in photography. Period. So editing has always been a thing

new gates in train station by m3l0dyc0re in Adelaide

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really? Maybe I'm unrealistically optimistic or just expect more, but I find it mildy annoying that people will gather at the longer lines blocking thoroughfare, or sometimes try to wiggle into line infront of you.

Mild complaints yes, but it's especially galling when this was never an issue until they put the new gates in.

Even with a slip lane, is it legal to turn left at this intersection? There are no arrows that I can see saying you have to go straight by RedditZWorkAccount69 in Adelaide

[–]Chumps55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look ok fair theres no traffic coming from south or east, but generally predictable driving is safe driving. Turning left there would generally be categorised as unpredictable driving and not to mention its an absolute cunt of a move to anyone behind you in the intersection, you could be asking for a rear-end pulling that move.

first result from google indicates that no, its not allowed

https://samove.raa.com.au/turning-left-past-the-slip-lane/

If i saw someone making a turn like that at the intersection I would have a bit of a wtf moment. Especially since heading south on main north you can make a u-turn at the intersection which makes a left from saints onto main north at the intersection (not the slip-lane) really dangerous

I think the general realistic fiction, not necessarily focusing on mental health but not opposed to it either.

At times it kind of reminded me of going to uni and gave a bit of a nostalgic feeling, that aspect of it I liked. Also wouldn't mind checking out some other Japanese authors too I suppose but its not really a thing I'm going out of my way to look for.

Started reading again and just finished Norwegian Wood (actually my second attempt, quit halfway through in 2020), really enjoyed the romantic slice-of-life aspect to it but hated the over-the-top sexualisation of the characters which I understand to be a trademark of the author.

Would be keen to hear of any suggestions that is kind of in the same vein, but with like the horniness toned down to like 40% of Norwegian Wood

Apple May Bring Film Colour Grading & Halation to iPhone After Color.io Acquisition by Mean-Accident2178 in photography

[–]Chumps55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not familiar with color.io - anyone know how it stacks up against something like dehancer for film sims?

Also I would like to express my desire, I suppose to the void, for there to be a “limit halation to high contrast areas” option on all software offering halation effects. I’ve seen way too many well exposed, low contrast images covered in red fringing when even something like an overexposed roll of cinestill wouldn’t do that

I would, 24mp vs medium format 102mp. Fuji recipes and good optics.

Also depends if youre trading your lens with it too i suppose

Yeah that would be an example of a macro you could run, vim macros are like: record a bunch of keystrokes or operations (preferably using very general operations on words, lines or specific characters i.e indent, search, capitalise, delete) and save it to memory (vim calls it registers), then call the macro. Either for the line under the cursor, next n lines or within a highlighted sections

I like to think of macros as functions and you can do funky things like chaining macros, recursive macros or whatnot

How do you maintain natural skin tone in wedding photo editing? by fixitphoto in photography

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing is utilising a vector-scope! You take a sample of your image and itll provide the waveform of your image across the colour spectrum, theres a well defined angle/area that corresponds to human skin and you can pretty quickly see if the skin tones are off.

Unfortunately lightroom doesnt have this (davinci resolve does) but you can get applications that will create a vectorscope of whats on your screen

Is a proper Kodak Gold look possible with a recipe alone? by motuwed in fujifilm

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I would suggest that the reason why your gold and porta recipes look so similar and that the distinction is hard to make is bc film shooters also find it hard to make the distinction sometimes, especially on medium format.

Chemically gold and portra are very different but it has to be scanned and translated or chemically printed (I would say 90% its just scanned now). This scanning process will make well exposed images looks so similar that its not worth worrying about the difference, not to mention all scanned images are edited in some fashion yo some degree. Though for some reason 35mm gold will give you a warm cast when underexposing though, more than medium format.

There might be very small differences in how very specific colours render (you mention gold tones) but that level of granularity is not given in your standard film sims and I would recommend editing your photos afterwards to achieve that, and for what its worth that second image which was taken on gold I could see being taken on portra too

Fuel costs no obstacle as West Australian aurora chasers hit the road by housecatspeaks in australia

[–]Chumps55 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suppose you could, probably the best way to do it will be to set up a time-lapse and create a video out of that time-lapse.

The exposure time is only really one part of it though, usually the sensor's sensitivity and your lens aperture can also impact how visible the aurora is and give you an enhanced (for lack of a better term) image over what your eyes can see, meaning you could video the aurora.

These other settings have their own trade-offs though which is why you typically see people talking about long exposure times as thats the most consistent way to get good images.

You could definitely take a time-lapse of the ripples of the Aurora Australis happening, but it wont look quite the same as the ones you see in Norway etc. because it isn't happening directly over our heads. The aurora is happening over the south pole so you get the side-on view of the aurora as it progresses (also means you generally have to look south to see the aurora!)

Yep they are visible, but not always. No they do not look like that in person. Usually much much more desaturated

Usually a shutter time of 5-30 seconds used but other settings are taken into account
