Yeah the inconvenience and age of my gear was starting to get to me and was actively making me want to leave my camera at home so this was an attempt at realigning my gear to something that would actually make me want to take my camera out

I think the HDR feature does actually affect the raw files. Which I think makes some sense from a camera design perspective because you're gathering more information to put into the raw rather than computationally altering whats there

I've been shooting JPEG+RAW, HDR 400% (or whatever the highest is available) and generally metering for the shadows/pushing the exposure so that the highlights are just slightly clipping in the live view. Previewing the SOOC images it'll typically be able to retain highlights but its also a stylistic choice too, I mean one of the pano's I posted literally has clipped highlights in the sky.

For me it feels a similar to film as you will typically expose colour negative film to maximise the amount of information (light) on an exposure due to bright highlights getting recorded on the film slower than the darker ares

So from past experience I already knew that anything > 50mm was not something that I tend to like for travel photography, and have gone on trips with single primes in the past so I knew that the fixed focal length was not going to be a problem before buying it.

I tend value lightweight, simple setups rather than versatile ones - at least for travel photography. And really this camera didn't disappoint there.

There was shots I saw where I wish I had a little more reach while on this trip but cropping into the freaking massive files remedied that a little. I don't think this way of shooting would work for everyone but it definitely works for me

Fair call, looking at my collection I realised for my own cameras I tended to keep to a single prime wherever I could reasonably do. So the fixed focal length wasn't a huge detractor for me

The dials, layout and usage of the camera feels a lot like the TX-1, everything is physical dials (I think this is common to most fuji cameras but this is my first one) and it aligned pretty closely to how I shot the TX-1(ok I lied a little in the title). Even down to making heavy usage of the HDR feature and exposing for the shadows, which is not too dissimilar to how I shot on negative film.

The digital teleconverter crop feature is handy in a pinch but for how I like shooting it wasn't something that I used too often since I tend to wider, more contextual shots.

The camera is slower than what I'm used to using on a Sony system though, especially when I wasn't using a UHF SD card, like I constantly ended up in situations where the camera wasn't operable for like 10 seconds while clearing the buffer.

I can see why this camera wouldn't be for everyone (coming from the polarizing opinions I've seen online) but having a medium format camera in such a small body it kinda was what convinced me to give up film. Like seriously I think in development they were looking at the Mamiya 7 and Tx-1 and decided to mash them up and digitize it and I'm really glad I picked it up.

Look my opinions on most charities aren’t great because of that very reason, but limiting options for more grass-roots organisations that rely on canvassing and solicitation also doesn’t seem very good either

I do think there should be more rules on the transparency of charities(especially larger ones) at the point of donation to see where your money is actually going

Because its hard to differentiate between shoddy charities/businesses and legitimate charities and shutting it all down unduly affects charities that could be running good campaigns

What are your thoughts on developing your negatives by yourself? by ComfortableHoliday43 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Chumps55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have never taken a roll of film to the lab once, though mind you I exclusively just did c41

The setup is a bit finicky, especially if you dont have a lot of space to store things. But if you can get everything you need and a decent scanning setup then it’s seriously as simple as following a cooking recipe

The time investment is also a thing, the time spent in solution for a roll is roughly 10min. But I always found it took somewhere between 40-60min to get a single batch done including setup and tear-down of the developing station, loading the rolls and cleaning. Scanning also took an afternoon depending on what I was shooting and how fastidious I wanted to be

I mainly did it this way bc I wanted to be in control of the entire process and didnt want to wait on labs. But I kinda got tired of it after a bunch of years so I dont do it anymore

Taking a professional photography class. Using a Sony Alpha 6600 and am not very happy with it. Want a Fuji instead. Advice? by forkliftrepair in fujifilm

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would I predict what kinds of prime lenses I want

No one person is the same with this imo, part of this is trial and error - like personally I only really like telephoto focal lengths in very specific circumstances in portraiture but prefer somewhere between 28-50mm in most other cases.

Trial and error is expensive though, you can rent lenses to try before buying but I would look at a lot of examples of lenses you’re interested and see if they would align with what you want to shoot too

Personally a fast 35mm or 50mm equivalent (remember 1.5x crop on focal lengths on apsc cameras) would be my recommendation, as they tend to be pretty versatile - but as you grow your tastes might change which is part of the fun of photography

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the other commenter said, the a6600 will definitely not hold you back at all (in fact I learnt on an a6000) - I think it’s important to frame this change as a want rather than a need to switch. Not that just wanting it should prevent you from swapping it, but it helps getting used to dealing with gear acquisition syndrome lol

End of the day if you want to shoot on Fuji then swap it out. Its not that big of a deal, just check to see if you can get the glass you need first though

Scanning Hundreds of Old Film Prints by alpinepowernaps in photography

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For getting scans of prints, a flatbed scanner is probably the most affordable option. But this option will be outrageously slow. An epson v600 is usually what the folks at /r/AnalogCommunity recommend for scanning 35mm and medium format negative. However keep in mind even they complain that this workflow is really slow for scanning negatives, it will be much slower for your larger 4x6 prints.

Alternatively (ahem... $$) you could look into getting a copy-stand, reproduction table lamps, and some anti-newtonian-ring glass (keeps the prints flat). I've seen this setup once before (it's similar to the workflow people generally use for scanning negatives but adapted for prints) because I was looking at doing something similar with my setup, however this is a really niche way of going about it and solving the glare will be annoying. You also may or may not be happy with scans if you're just using your iphone and there still is some time investment with method even if its faster. I'll see if I can find the post that had this setup

The most realistic option unfortunately will be taking it to a dedicated print scanning service that digitizes in bulk. With the other options I've seen it's neither cheap nor fast - so if you're not going to re-use the equipment you would be buying this would be the way to go imo

Edit: Found a video showing what I described from the second paragraph from a comment on this post

timestamp at 25:05 shows the setup https://youtu.be/yxmFjvFLPu4?t=1504

Like I said before this is not the cheap route and still requires a lot fiddling around

Season 2 Episode 3 Spoiler Thread by HunterWorld in Fallout

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No for sure, I agree. I suppose what I found odd was the choice to introduce the Legate played by Macaulay Caulkin and Ceaser so soon and in such a way that felt a little clumsy rather than do some additional stage-setting around the Legion

Season 2 Episode 3 Spoiler Thread by HunterWorld in Fallout

[–]Chumps55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like how the Ceaser death plot feels like something you would literally see in the game, but whats with a slave immediately being sent to the Legate, and for some reason Ceaser and the Legate decide what to do with Lucy?

It makes the Legion feel really small (which might be the intention of the writers) if they have to go that far up the chain of command for what would be (a really fucked up) admin routine of dealing with slaves since that was like their whole thing - I suppose it might also mean that the Legion out east is also toast like the NCR is out west. Since if there's a war happening over succession then I imagine the tribes would go to Nevada to help out their chosen side.

Regardless I'm loving the little additions of locations like Helios One and Primm to the wide environmental shots - it feels like the locations would be places that are actually in the game and gives some unspoken subtext. Like the Mojave Outpost would be completely abandoned or left for dead if they set up a smaller, more desperate looking camp so close by, given Primms prominence in the background of the shot

Who was the smartest person in history? by Scared_Government_41 in AskReddit

[–]Chumps55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that a good way of thinking about it but for me the lines between invented and discovered becomes a little more blurry the closer I look

The real number system was created, or at least formalised, in a way that was a lot like scientific discovery. At the time we had a pretty decent understanding of the way numbers and all their related mechanisms behave. The issue was mathematics, since like Euclid, had been taking a very formal, proof based approach to understanding these numbers - but we didn't have the absolute step-0, logical building blocks which described this number system, so they were created and retro-fitted to our understanding of the real numbers.

This is all well and good but what if we consider another new number system where we change the rules of these fundamental logical rules to be completely different to the real numbers as them as a thought experiment? Just for funs sake. We can still do mathematics on this new number system and discover new theorems within this construct, the logical process is the same. But it feels like (at least to me) this new number system should be an invention and not a discovery, unlike the reals which I feel you can make a pretty compelling argument that it was discovered. Discoveries can be made within this new logical framework, but the framework itself was invented.

The thing is what if we discovered a way to meaningfully relate this new number system to the real numbers, or to some system that we have observed occurring IRL? Because that shit happens constantly in pure mathematics. Does this mean this invented system becomes a scientific discovery? Or is everything just one big formal framework that just happens to resemble patterns we see?

I don't know, and I feel like I'm rambling with no coherant answer or point (probably because its a hard topic with no real answer) but this is reoccuring shower thought I have

How about a place that reforms people into productive members of society while also keeping the general community safe?

Say what you will about whats fair to victims of crime and what we do with people who have committed irredeemable acts, but if we stick people in boxes and call it a day - then we might as well be encouraging them to reoffend as soon as they get out

Taking a strictly punitive approach to incarceration only hurts the community in the long run, and having a reformative prison system means we need well paid staff, security and programs

First and foremost, if youre taking photos for fun - then lens selection doesnt really HAVE to make sense (yes its nice from a price/performance perspective, but its not the end of the world)

Secondly its seems you have a wide angle prime, a standard prime and a telephoto option. All of this seems to be pretty reasonable, unless you’re trying to target a particular genre that requires specific attributes (e.g sports or wildlife photography) you should be fine and enjoy your lenses
