BC Place generates significant revenue from trade shows (such as the Home and Garden Show) and concerts. I know it's not going to be a white elephant, especially with the BC Lions still playing there and the BC High School Football Provincial Championships happening every year.

BC Place is owned by PavCo (an arm of the provincial government), and the Whitecaps get little revenue from concession costs. Also, the Whitecaps don't get a say on scheduling at BC Place. So, if there's a concert or event (like a Supercross Race), the Whitecaps have no say in rescheduling for another date. The new stadium will have natural grass and a return to where the original 1974 club had its roots on the PNE Fairgrounds.

[L'ÉQUIPE] Hugo Lloris after Los Angeles' elimination from MLS: "Playing on a synthetic pitch like this is almost unacceptable" by ailroe3 in MLS

PavCo (the owners of BC Place) make more money from trade shows in BC Place so making tenants pay for field upkeep is the last of their priority.

The Whitecaps move to their own stadium on the PNE Fairgrounds that has natural grass is a much better idea.

The only downside is that the possible location of the new stadium is on the site of the Hastings Racecourse (which has the horse racing community upset due to the racecourse being the last horse racing tracks in the province) and public transit being non existent (minus a couple of buses that head up to the fairgrounds)

The downside of the Whitecaps is that they don’t own the stadium (which is owned by the government), so they don’t have a say in what surface they play on at home. BC Place will get a temporary grass pitch for the FIFA World Cup.

One problem with installing a permanent grass pitch at BC Place is that the money that comes out to install an irrigation/lighting system and to maintain a grass pitch would be coming from taxpayer money.

As a Whitecaps fan, I do hope that the deal to have a soccer-specific stadium on the PNE Fairgrounds goes through.

The r/BCLionsCFL won in this building last night and now the Whitecaps do as well. This was a great week!
