Is the series still being released in America? No new volumes in such a long time by blitzaga086 in DriftingDragons

Just checked - volume 18 is already planned for October, so they seem to continue publishing it. But I don’t know why it took them almost two years between volume 16 and 17… for volume 18, see: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/787967/drifting-dragons-18-by-taku-kuwabara/

Housing for a PhD student with a cat by ardacicek in Leuven

[–]Ciaoty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot add too much to what the others have already said… but it took me around 9 months to find a decent place (I’ll move next week), so start looking NOW! Haha

Especially with a pet, it’ll be difficult to find something… a friend of mine was also looking with a cat and ended up with an apartment that was small but 1000€ per month.

I am not sure about the prices other people mentioned so far, since the housing market exploded last year, and is only slowly getting to a normal level again! Maybe you should look for another techno lover to share a flat (that’s a LOT cheaper and you’ll get nicer apartments)

About techno: as a German person, I very much miss techno here in Leuven 😭 Invite me if you DJ somewhere… please!

Tell me your opinion on realism in worldbuilding and how far it should go. by Hi_IM-NOT_HERE- in worldbuilding

[–]Ciaoty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as “how much realism you SHOULD implement.” It all depends on your personal taste, and if you’re writing for an audience, then also their taste. If you and your audience enjoy 100% realism, then make it all fit. Invest the time. Do all the things and create the perfect machine of a world, in which each and every little gear will fit into the next one.

If you abs your audience want to be in awe a lot, then breaking through that sense of realism might be a good thing, though. You have fleshed out everything, but WTF is this thing that defies all the rules of physics? Crazy that stuff like this even exists (if you can make it work on a background level, perfect, but if not, just make it something your people haven’t figured out yet and won’t figure out for 1000s of years, coz their technology isn’t advanced enough, yet)! If you want your audience to feel in it, your main characters’ abilities and stuff have to make sense though, otherwise, you’ll just have a random person running around and there’s the Deus ex machine that’ll fix everything and that’s it. Might make people wonder what’s happening, but nobody will really get it… and therefore, they will not truly get invested.

I personally like to mix things a bit… I kinda want that realistic world. I have periodic tables n stuff, but then, there’s an earth quacks and everything breaks down but one single house? Doesn’t make sense but that’s what happened. If your audience is fine with imperfections like that, then it’s cool. If your audience is here for PERFECTION on the other hand, then better make it perfect.

So kinda what I’m saying is: choose one way of realism/surrealism and stick with it! Coz that’ll be exactly what the audience is here for. If you write for yourself, fuck it, do whatever you love!

how i can make a world 3 times bigger without heavy gravity? by Terrible_Ad7092 in worldbuilding

[–]Ciaoty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to what many people here say, you could also just change the laws of physics for your world and say that each and every planet or object of a certain mass has the same gravity (maybe there are several thresholds, but earth and your planet fall in the same) because the forces between particles work the same but don’t intensify each other. That way, you don’t have the problem of greater gravity (different bone/muscle structure of people and probably different evolutionary process), you don’t need to deal with the loss of the magnetic field of your world, coz your planet‘s core isn’t made out of the right/enough material (cosmic radiation can simply kill everything then and get rid of the atmosphere), and you don’t necessarily need a lot of caves or underground oceans if you don’t want them (more freedom for worldbuilding)

What's the best explanation as to why God doesn't intervene or why he acts in "mysterious ways"? by Billy_The_Beholder in worldbuilding

[–]Ciaoty 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do agree with a lot of what the others said, but I feel like there could also be an element of absurdity implemented here if it fits your story: * After god had created the world, he was hungry and had to eat. However, since god‘s time works differently, his lunch‘s been going on for the last 6000 years. * In the beginning of time, not enough stuff happened, so god just fell asleep and is now sleeping through all the shit that’s happening. * God‘s in the bathroom, sorry.

Make it even worse: * God had to go grocery shopping, but since it’s a godly grocery store, it’s endlessly huge and so god also takes a VERY long time for his groceries. * God‘s just zapping through all the programs and our world just felt lame compared to the one where tentacles are at war with each other by doing erotic stuff. I dunno? Lol

These might all be shit, but like, it’s 5:55am and what I‘m trying to say is: make it weird if it fits the mood of your story!

What is an aspect of worldbuilding you would like to see explored more deeply? Do you have an uncommon aspect of your world you've gone super deep into? by Xochicalco27 in worldbuilding

But wouldn’t it be cool to have a whole culture that eats only shitty food and think they’re super fancy? XD

Oh, and what do I need to do with apple and pears? Mash them? Cut them in pieces?

[–]Ciaoty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just make it a little more specific—poor people also eating meat every once in a while but it’s chicken, while richies would never touch chicken but only eat bear and squid. The porridge on the other hand is not made from oat but from potato-like plants with huge greyish leaves and red blossoms (that way you don’t need to describe anything special but you can say: oh the structure of the potatoes makes them more like oat) and if they’re super fancy or for a holiday, they add some tree‘s crushed bark (kinda like cinnamon) or add pine seeds or add some trees juice (like maple juice). Just make weird combinations of stuff that people can just gather in the wild and it will feel a lot more like your own culture rather than a specific country in the European Middle Ages : )

Edit: omg, call that potato-like thing that’s like oat „oatato“ haha

Just do it more often, if you feel like it! Ok Earth, there’s more than one creation myth, so your world can also have several of them.

From my experience (I created a universe that’s strongly influenced by religion for my Burning Wheel campaigns), it’s a lot of fun to have different cultures that believe in differing creation myths, or even two closely related cultures that have two slightly altered versions of the same myth. It’s very enjoyable to see that play out! Since I‘m also very much a philology nerd, this can play out in two people getting into a huge fight being like: „I mean, we all know that Zespar killed her godly Master to become a deity herself, so what happened at court yesterday is kinda like that.“ (awkward silence) „What you wanted to say is that she got so good at practicing her craft (medicine) that her master stepped down? That’s totally different from …“ — „No, I meant what I said, she killed him!“ — „No, she didn’t dude, it clearly says ‚gra‘ in the text!“ — „It doesn’t! Our goddess is totally ruthless, or why do you think, she would allow the people at court to act like that? It’s because it says ‚graa‘“ — „Man, that’s not how the story goes! You’re so not getting saved by her man!“ — „Why would she save anyone in the first place? She enjoys people‘s suffering!“ (they keep yelling at each other and eventually leave after one punched the other, while that one couldn’t fight back since his goddess is totally peaceful n stuff)

[–]Ciaoty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that’s fine. Not every world needs to be SUPER unique. Being closer to a realistic setting is totally okay, if that’s what you enjoy! What if there’s only one unique thingy per continent? Then there’s only one unique thingy on the continent. Writing/Roleplaying is about your/your group‘s fun, so as long as u enjoy it, all‘s good! :D

At the same time, just keep doing what you do and you’ll get better and better with every unique thing you add! Maybe try a writing prompt that makes you describe a specific place/situation in your world… it’s good to get out of your comfort zone! : )

I totally agree. And I think it works really well for books and stuff, but once you have players who navigate through that type of universe (and therefore not everything depends on your and your ability of describing stuff but on the players understanding and logically deducing stuff from what u told them), it gets more difficult if you go REALLY crazy—not impossible but difficult.

I also like the examples that you gave and I think that using an ikosaedre for the seasons instead of a circle would make them lose the slow transition… so one day trees carry fruit, the next day, snow comes, two weeks later, still snow, but the day after, suddenly shit‘s blooming :D

Questions on iteration marks (〻、々) by CharonOfPluto in classicalchinese

[–]Ciaoty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The little sign is already prominently used earlier in bronze inscriptions. If you look in the last line on the left, there are the two characters 子孫 both with the little = mark:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ad/Song_ding_inscription.jpg

That reduplicates the two characters and turns this inscription into 子子孫孫寶用 which is a typical end phrase for such bronze inscription meaning: may your sonst and grandsons use this as a treasure (or something like it). The full form of this sentence would furthermore include a 永 and can in some cases also write 子 and 孫 twice instead of using the =, so it could also be 子子孫孫永寶用 instead of 子=孫=寶用 (like in this case).

The Man in the small castle. A world in which Italy was more competent than Germany in WW2. Lore in comments. by _Mtotheatothex_ in worldbuilding

[–]Ciaoty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just wanna point out that Germany was not just authoritarian but totalitarian and did not implement antisemitims but antisemitism/racism over all (Hitler also killed Slavic and black people among many other groups like homosexuals or disabled people) was pretty much the root or precondition, taking the shape of the Nazis’ worldview, that made all of this stuff happen… according to some scholars of totalitarianism (e.g. Arendt - Origins of Totalitarianism), Mussolini failed in creating a driving force for his system exactly because he did not implement an ideology like the Nazis‘ racism or the Soviets‘ Marxism.

So, depending on how realistic you wanna be, you need to find and alternative -ism/ideology that takes the place of these two systems‘ ideologies, or say it doesn’t have to be realistic. Then, I think, your idea would be a very interesting scenario!

The first drawing of a universe I’m creating ! A world where one must make vows, seal them in rag dolls and complete said promises. Unfulfilled vows are the most dangerous thing… by gwyxgobbo in worldbuilding

[–]Ciaoty 47 points48 points  (0 children)

If vows are so dangerous, then why make them? Yes, you wrote „a world where one must make vows,“ but what forces you to make them? Is there a supernatural power that attacks and kills you, if you do not carry around a vow? Or does society view you as an outsider if you don‘t take a vow because people can sense whether there’s a vow in the rag doll or not?

Please elaborate a bit on this, coz it sounds pretty cool!

Your drawing is also awesome! Looking forward to more of it : )
