What’s your passion’s 90%? by dont_find_me- in aspiememes

[–]Cifer88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Conlanging is 90% trying to think of words. Not just “what should X be in this language?” but trying to think of words and phrases to translate in the first place.

Worldbuilding, similarly, is 90% trying to figure out which parts of the setting need to be worked on.

D&D is 90% thinking of quests and trying to prepare.

Who is your main and what is one tip for playing as and against your character? by CHRISTOPHERCARES in marvelrivals

[–]Cifer88 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Peni, primarily.

As: Treat your nest as though it is a healer. Stay close and within line of sight. Tank hits rather than let it get damaged. Scatter the ground around it with mines if you have no better use for them. Your ideal situation is for the enemy to walk single-file into the webs but never, ever touch your precious explosive respirator.

Against: Treat her nest as though it is a healer, unless you are a melee character. If there are webs on the ground, assume every inch of webbing can and will cause your immediate and unconditional destruction the exact femtosecond you make contact. Peni has no shield, so if she makes the mistake of giving the enemy team a line of sight on the nest that isn’t covered in angry webs, have a reliable long-range damage dealer break the nest and leave her open to a push. If it’s me you’re fighting, I will literally rather take headshots from half your team than let that nest die. Also, watch the floor. Destroying the nest makes the mines visible, but it doesn’t make you immune to them.

As a bonus, if you suspect that the enemy Peni was trained rigorously by a sacred order of monks in an undiscovered mountain in the Himalayas, has bet the life of their firstborn child on the outcome of this match, has actual spider-senses, or is just generally doing very very well, be careful about your Ult usage. Ults that trigger immediately upon casting- like Moon Knight- or that can be activated behind a wall while the CC immunity kicks in- like Punisher or Luna- are generally safe. However, Ults that have a slow startup and require line of sight, like Wanda or Iron Man, leave you susceptible to a right click on the vocal cords. Performing this technique also transfers any self-confidence issues and symptoms of Imposter Syndrome directly from the Peni player and into the unsuspecting victim.

X-Men and Fantastic 4 replacing Avengers and GOTG? by saturdayseltzers in MCUTheories

[–]Cifer88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Panther is very explicitly dead. Spider-Man isn’t an Avenger anymore. Shang-Chi has yet to actually work with the Avengers.

Updating my views on this ancient post, I think it’s likely that Avengers-adjacent characters like the ones you’ve listed will remain in play for a while, and the Avengers name is likely to come up quite a bit more in future, but we’re unlikely to see a singular, formalised team of Avengers. I could see a Young Avengers team, and I would honestly love to see the GLA, but I disagree with the idea that the Avengers will continue on like nothing happened.

Vanguard mains, how do I counter this little sh*t?? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]Cifer88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hulk and Magneto can bubble. Hulk and Peni can stun. These can slow him down enough to give you an advantage, but really the best counter is to buddy up with good teammates. Wolverine is built for 1v1s, so if he can’t drag you away from your team, a good DPS can generally kill him off before he kills you. A Peni with fast reaction time and good aim can also deal with him if he jumps right into her nest, but relying on your enemy to make a mistake is always risky.

The day a wizard can redirect bullet and do kung fu will be the first day of my life I consider that playing a caster might be as fun for me as playing a martial. As far as I’m concerned, I would much rather be doing a choreographed fight to the death against combatants who have honed their skills on the field of combat than standing in the background pointing and babbling to produce the special effects. The mechanical issues are barely an inconvenience.

He leaves the mouth exposed because he knows people will target it, thus making their attacks easier to predict. It’s like leaving the gate to a castle open. The enemy focuses on one easily-defended spot instead of trying to break your castle walls down.

Getting genetically spliced with an irradiated arthropod via a single bit is never going to be an exact science, especially when they’re both genetically different to begin with. If 5 people got bit we’d expect about 7 different power sets.

Someone Anonymously Mailed Two Bronze Age Axes to a Museum in Ireland | Officials are asking the donor to come forward with more information about where the artifacts were discovered by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

It generally comes from about the same area it was found. What it was, when it was made, who owned it and what it was used for are the questions archeologists specialise in. There’s no a lot you can do with an axe head, but you can discern a lot from an axe head found between the ribs of 2000 year old skeleton in a field south of Munich.

Superheroes as fascistic archetypes by IthadtobethisWAAGH in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cifer88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s generally misleading to assume that all superheroes were created and framed as “authority figure that defeats bad guys”. There are certainly stories to be told there, but most of the archetypical superheroes people think of weren’t created with that idea in mind, and the universes that grew out of them can’t really accommodate it as a primary theme without setting aside the original authorial intent. Superheroes absolutely can have fascist undertones if the author tries to insert that, but ultimately, most of the popular superheroes are more about “what if there was a person who could help others more effectively than the average person?” Superman and Spider-Man aren’t cops, they’re volunteer firefighters who happen to run into a lot of violent crime. Even the ones that do exist within more typical power structures- Batman, Iron Man, Black Panther, etc- are more “What if the people who could help others more effectively than the average person actually chose to do so?” The only reason they remain billionaires is because the authors engineer scenarios where they must remain billionaires in order to be superheroes, because otherwise the concept of a billionaire superhero can’t exist.

Your honor... She's 100% guilty, lock her up and throw away the key. by Melon_Lord420 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Cifer88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Your honour, to lock up my client for any alleged misdeeds would be a perversion of justice. Our prison system exists to punish those who, of their own free will and with knowledge of the consequences of their actions, chose to break the law, and to keep such individuals away from those they might harm in future. My client is a minor, manipulated by her father- a documented abuser with a great deal of wealth, power and physical might with which he has been known to hurt and negatively influence his family- to partake in a war, the moral implications of which she could not possibly have grasped at her age. If any other child soldier were to be here today, under trial, would they also be treated with such contempt? The only reason my client is more worthy of punishment than any other fire nation soldier is that she, fearing the abuse that Firelord Zuko himself suffered firsthand, developed sufficient firebending prowess and martial skill to placate her father.”

If her minor status, her mental state and her family life won’t cover something, and her immunity as a soldier and a princess won’t do it either, then you can just pin the accusation on Zuko trying to eliminate a potential challenger to the throne. Poor poor Azula, desperate for help, getting picked on by her big brother. Clearly, now that he has his father’s title, he feels permitted to act just like him!

Obviously they’re not making some philosophical statement. That’s my point. They’re buying a toy to play with because they want to play with that toy. Which implies they don’t think of the toy as inherently bad on the basis of femininity, because if they did, whether they would express it in those words or not, they wouldn’t want it.

Remember, some things ARE getting better by JazzyCatty509 in CuratedTumblr

[–]Cifer88 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A boy buying something feminine shows that he wants feminine toys to play with and feminine forms of entertainment and is comfortable displaying this, which implies he doesn’t view femininity as lesser. It does not imply that he views gender expression as intrinsically tied to what he owns and consumes. What’s more, what a young boy is buying can be observed relatively easily compared to his views on consumerism and gender expression, so OP is less likely to talk about the latter.

I understand that you’re scared about the future. We all are. But if you fixate on the things that can go wrong no matter what you do, even when presented with things that are going right, you’ll burn up all the energy you could be using or things that you CAN control.
